Summary: What is this? - Peckinpaw does Tolkein?
Review: Like everything else Bakshi has done, this is overblown and over-the-top. Needlessly gory. Shock done for the sake of Shock, not to advance a story line. The two Rankin and Bass movies are among my all-time favorites. If only they had done this movie, too, ...

Summary: Don't beleive the hype, everything about this movie ROX!!!!
Review: The following review is poorly written, but has a point.

This is an amzaing movie. The anamation is way better than anything weve seen in the past 2 decades, and until just today, I thought the movie was made in the 90's and had no idea it was released in the theaters many years ago. The story is very accurate, more accurate then any other book made into a movie. And what a great story, even for people who aren't really big fans of tolkien or fantasy (im not). The music is great, I love how they used the theme in many differant moods; sad, suspencful, heroic etc, and I can't stop humming it. This movie was made very artisticly which is cool cus most times, (like 2 other certain movies that I won't mention so as not to break the review giudlines ::wink, wink::) animated movies and book-movies are just generic garbage released by a bunch of gozillionares. The scene right before frodo gets into rivendel were the ring wraits are after him is just tight! So forget the nit picking, and stop whining that treebeard doesn't look like what you pictured him to be when u read the book, cus nothin ever does. The fact is that this is an great and well made movie, by any standerds. And as far as it never being finished, that's not the creators fault. The movie was already very long, and they couldn't have kept it at the same quality and fit in the ENTIRE story, so they release just part of it. Unfortunatly, all you goofballs back in the 70's didn't go see it cus u were unaware of its greatness, and they couldn't make a sequal cus it wasn't succesful. And furthermore, I don't think it hurt the movie, because they still managed to have an ending, despite what you all sed. I obviously cant give away the story, but the ending they gave was exciting, and enjoyable, and left you at a very cool emotional high, even if it left some loose strings, and even if it was abrubt, I still loved it. Anyone who finds the ending so bothersome, is obviously the type of person who can only enjoy a typical Hollywood movie with a typical happily ever after ending. Id almost say that the loose strings at the end made it more interesting. And the point of the movie was the experiance of...THE MOVIE. It was long, and great and thats all that matters. If you need an ending so bad read the last two books. Infact, i'd say anyone who's read the last two books shouldn't worry about the undone story at all, CUS THEY ALREADY KNOW THE STORY They just want to watch how the story can be brought to life infront of there very eyes. And it truly is.

Anyways, whats the bottom line to this nonstop rambling? (I'm obviously not going into journalism,i know this was terribly written) BUT THIS IS THE POINT. Read the 4 books, there great, and if u have half an imagination you'll love them, nomader who you are. Then watch this movie. Its the best animated movie ive ever seen, the best book to movie ive ever seen, the best movie from the 70's ive ever seen, and in all, a very great movie that needs to be in your DVD collection.
... ... Anwyayz Peace out yall and hope to see you at the release of the new live action Lord of the Rings!

Summary: Yes! It finally has arrived!
Review: For all of you who were alive, and still in high-school when this film came out, here is a chance to re-live the fun, the talent, and the artwork that Bakshi wrapped around Tolkein's classic tale The Lord of The Rings. Sure it looks dated! It was a time unto itself, and I remember a cloud of smoke in the theatre that seemed to permeate everything, while I watched the wild imagery up on the screen. The hairstyles, the coloring, the ambience of the film were all part of the era, but they still seem to lend themselves to the positive side of the viewing experience, and not to the negative. Maybe younger persons will find it flaky, or just plain stupid, but that is something to be expected from kids who have their ideas, and ideals, spoon-fed to them by MTV, and a culture that seems to regard Fantasy as a wasteland-realm for the socially mis-fit.
And ENOUGH from the HARDCORE, Tolkein, religeous-right! Any of you who claim Bakshi didn't see it the way it was supposed to be, or state that he "put bad 70's hair on everyone", should "get out of your parent's basements and find a job, and a girlfriend! What a bunch of nit-picking, self-proclaiming garbage! I read the books too, and I'll bet that what I saw, while reading them, looked nothing like what you saw. But I digress. This is a great film, and I recommend it highly.

Summary: lord of the rings
Review: This classic tale created by one man's immagination, totally stretches every persons fantasies and dreams.J.R.R Tolkien's trilogy, gives a chance of escapism from a modern, somewhat harsh world we live in today.
Nevertheless Ralph bashki's adaptation portrayed a somewhat improvised and credible display, well pleasing to the viewers eye
and immagination only to end, leaving one waiting for the conclusion never to come.
overall i rate this film a must and can't wait for december 19th for the new film being released.

Summary: The Best Movie Ever
Review: As an avid Tolkien fan I must say that this DVD was truly the best rendition of Tolkien's work ever. All of the character's were exactly as I pictured them and the music and artwork was magnificent.
While watching the movie one can see that a lot of time and effort went into this film and one never tires of watching it. On the DVD the picture is much clearer and the scenes of the black riders send spine tingling chills up your back even more so than they did on the VHS. It almost feels as if you are on that horrible flight to the ford with Frodo the picture is so clear.
I think that all people, fans and new fans alike should at least watch this DVD once and from then on it will probably be the only one in your DVD player because it is so awesome.

Summary: Not So Bad...Genuinely Atmospheric At Times
Review: Yeah, the ending is terrible, and anybody going in to see this for the first time should be warned that the story is left unfinished...we never see Frodo take the Ring to Mordor...never see how everything turns out. Even as a kid, I was disappointed.
But I gotta say that Bakshi DID capture some great atmosphere in this movie. Come on, you've got to love the psychedelic scene of the Wraith on horseback, menacing Frodo by the riverside! Or how about that Balrog?!? Really, really cool. The fact that much of the animation utilized the 'tracing' technique only adds to the uniqueness to me, and at times, it is a genuine strength. This is well illustrated by the character Sam...his kinetic and fluid expressions are so much fun to watch. There are weak moments in the animation (for instance, the orc hordes who "stand" absolutely motionless, with the exception of a couple awkwardly wiggling spears...ugghhh), but I think that the weaknesses are outweighed by the strengths, in terms of visuals.

As for the DVD, the picture is very good, and I'm so glad that it's in widescreen. I'd like to have seen a "making of" though, explaining more about the whole rotoscope technique, and the reasons for the movie ending the way it does. The bonus materials are pretty slim.

But if this film fired your imagination as a kid like it did mine, flaws be darned, I highly recommend it.

Summary: Lord of the rings
Review: Even though this movie does not tell the whole story it does give you are real taste of Tolkiens world.
Great animation style is used by Bakshi, music by Leonard Roseman & the voices of the fellowship of the ring are from some of the best actors ie: John Hurt & Peter Woodthorpe as Gollum you will never forget his voice acting it haughted me since my childhood.
A great movie for any true fan of "The Lord of the Rings".
Also there are animated movies of "The Hobbit" & "The Return of the King" both are very good but they are done in a different style then Bakshi great movie.
Have fun & may the Hair on your feet never fall out.

Summary: To Each His Own
Review: Like many of my generation, I viewed Bakshi's live action/animation film version of "The Lord of the Rings" prior to reading the novels. Although it's very condensed and ends on an abrupt note ("The Return of the King" is left out entirely, and only the first two novels from the series are included in the story line), it is, in my opinion, a much underrated masterpiece. The animation is for the most part really well done and captures the atmosphere perfectly, though there are a few characters who seem out of place merely by nature of the way they're drawn i.e. Treebeard. I can see why diehard fans of the novels are quick to criticize it, as it truely isn't much like the 3-book series. The only downpoints to this DVD are its lack of extra features: the "Tolkien and filmmaker highlights" are merely a few sentence-long (and commonplace) facts with a "next" and "previous" menu. I wish Warner Bros. wouldn't issue cheap-looking carboard snap cases with there DVDs. What happened to the good old plastic cases with see-thru sleeves? The animated characters in this film really painted a picture of the characters in my head while I was reading the book. I was pleasantly suprised to learn, upon receipt, that this is the ("matted") widescreen edition. It's just too bad there was never a follow-up Bakshi film made...

Summary: Classic Animated Movie, well half of one.
Review: Unlike it seems alot of people, I quite liked this movie. Okay it does look half finished but if you can look past that and accept that there isn't an ending it's really quite good. now I've never read any of tolkien's books so I can't comment on how accurate it is. The reason I game this 4 not 5 is because of the DVD. It is rather a poor effort by warner bros, no extra features of any kind even the theatrical trailer it says on the box isn't on the disc. Couldn't they have got a commentary from someone? or other artwork or anything?! Well looks like this is less popular than MGM's Killer Klowns From Outer Space which was packed with extras.

Summary: still as good as the first time.
Review: Ah what a good feeling to see this movie again. Was almost as good as the first time. Very impressive for 1978, of course , now it looks easy stuff , with our special effects in our computers. But i still loved it. The story is very captivating
and kind of romantic. A fairytales movie .... Love it .
Only problem ,,, the story does not finish...
