Rating: Summary: Adults & Kids alike will LOVE it! Review: I am still scratching my head on this one (no, I'm not a witch!). This movie has *everything* --Special effects, humour, excitement, joy, sadness, and yes, a superlative performance by Angelica Houston. So why did Warner Bros. decide to "sneak" this film into theatres and then quickly let it die, with little marketing? Who knows! It deserves so much more. Parents will appreciate the slightly twisted (if not cruel) humour, while children will delight in the cuteness of it all. I just can't say enough about Angelica Houston's performance. She's actually even *funnier* in this film with full makeup on. Anyone can spend 4 hours a day getting into full makeup and look good, but she actually transcends the appliances and TRULY becomes the Grand High Witch. "...child....is a mouse!" Jasen Fisher is also a delight as Luke (a Chicago accent in Europe though...but hey, he's a cute kid). See this movie. I promise, you'll be glad you did! Oh, and "who spoke? It vas you? "
Rating: Summary: Delightful Kids Flick Review: I discovered thsi movie at the age of eight and became obsessed with it renting it several times then buying it for myself a few years later. Kids flicks don't get any better than this. This movie is based on the book by Rolald Dahl which is about a boy who comes across a flock of witches while vacationing with his grandma on the English seashore. The witches *led by Angelica Huston* are meeting under the disguise of a "children's charity organization* but really are discussing plans to get rid of all of the children in England by turning them into mice! Unfortunately, the boy whose name is Luke becomes one of their first victims. The story is great fun as are the actors. The end is the best part which takes place at a fancy dinner for the witches, but I won't give it away. Fantastic movie for the young and the young at heart.
Rating: Summary: THIS MOVIE SIMPLY GREAT! Review: I had read the novel by Roald Dahl before I first saw the film, and I thought that it would be too scary for words...but it wasnt...maybe it will be for kids who are under 7. It is humourous as well as it is frightning, and it also has quite a bit of adventure, for a fiction film. The actors and actressess are simply fabulous...my favourite was Angelica Huston who portrayed the Grand High Witch! The story is fairly fast-paced compared to the book, and even though I may like the book better, I *love* the film as well! If you're a fan of Roald Dahl or if you like fiction/horror films, youi've got to see this!
Rating: Summary: Witty Review: I love the movie and have watched it so many times! In fact it inspired me to read the Roald Dahl classic. The selection of actors (and actresses) possess different gifts: Anjelica is slyly evil and perversely sophisticated; Rowan Atkinson (what can I say) idiosyncratic though much more sane than the adorable Mr. Bean; Luke (sorry, I forgot the name) is a talented child star well able to portray emotions of fear so well! I'm sure every child will be convinced and delighted by the fresh touch of fantasy and masterful fusion of superb acting + realism. Recommend highly for a family summer watch... Your child will love it, so will you. Ps: There are a few awkward moments and expressions on the "Grandma's" face on a few occasions, I thought. No matter
Rating: Summary: Nice Film But Review: I love this film everybody did a good job in it, the only two things that are disappointing are that the sound is'nt as good as it should be and picture presented in pan & scan not widescreen , i think the guys at warners should issue an update version of this film with the sound in 5.1 i think this wonderful fun film should deserve it, with behind the scenes , deleted and other wonderful goodies. may this happen one day to this wonderful film.
But all in all i'd highly recommend this for the ages of
9 & up
Rating: Summary: Its full of cheesy fun! Review: I love this movie! I remember seeing it as a kid like 20 million times. Its typical Hollywood dribble about witches, but its still fun and entertaining; and when you get down to it isn't that what its all about? Who cares if it's real! Take it from a practicing witch, this is just too much fun!
Rating: Summary: DONT GET THIS IF YOU LIKED THE BOOK! Review: I loved the book, so when I saw this, I was HORRIBLY disappointed. It *butchered* Dahl's work. The only way someone could get me to watch this again (I had to be forced to watch it after I wanted to get up after the first 15 minutes) is if they strapped me down and forced me to keep my eyes open on pain of death. The entire hotel scene was awful, and the part with his grandmother at the beginning was so... disgustingly off of the book. I would run out of ways to describe my distaste of this movie before I ran out of things to complain about it! Do yourself a BIG favor and get the book instead, you'll be glad you did!
Rating: Summary: I remeber it vividly from my childhood and I had to own it. Review: I loved this film from start to finish and I would recommend seeing it if you haven't already.I love all the wonderful characters and the wonderful story line. I laughed and even became a little frightened at times. If you want to see a great film, ad The Witches to your video collection. It is one of the late Jim Henson's greatest works.
Rating: Summary: so sad no wide screen Review: I recommend this movie, for all the good reasons, except sadly, no wide screen presentation. Oh well, still happy to have it on dvd after all. IT IS A GREAT FILM, AND ANGELICA IS THE BEST. Also see her in the Addams Family movies.
Rating: Summary: If your kids are scared of witches... Review: I saw this at daycare when I was about four.I guess the staff really didn't know how scary these kind of movies can be to a child.I remember being very, very scared.Would you tell a kid there were no such things as witches, and monsters, and other scary things, and then have them watch this movie? No.It's a little too intense for a four yearold.I had nightmares for weeks.I know you're probably wondering why a junior high student would sit down, and write about an old movie, that scared them to death when they were little.Well, the answer is only because some people just don't know how scary things are until they experience them. Why give your child nightmares,if you can avoid it? If your kid is scared of witches, stay away from the Hocus Pocus, and The Witches type movies.Otherwise, you would probably like this movie.
