Summary: Superb special effects, but little more. . .
Review: This movie always leaves me feeling very cheated, not because there is anything wrong with the movie itself, but because it could have been so much better. Granted, the special effects wizardry is second to none. The Martian Fighting Machines are sleek and menacing, and the heat ray and magnetic disruptor beams are awesome. Unfortunately, there is very little beyond the visual "eye candy" offered by the film. In modernizing H.G. Wells' turn-of-the-century classic, plot was sacrificed in the name of flash and bang. The most unfortunate part of this is that it wasn't necessary. Instead of inserting scenes of bullets and bombs bouncing off the invaders (. . yawn. .) and men and tanks being disintegrated, the writers should have stuck with the original concept. Much more terror would have been evoked by seeing artillerymen celebrating as they destroy a Martian Fighting Machine with their well-concealed guns, only to have their victory immediately snuffed out by the lethal "black smoke" canisters. Additionally, a wonderful special effects opportunity was overlooked by passing on the spectacular death-ride of the torpedo ram "Thunder Child"! This movie is proof that newer and flashier isn't necessarily better. It would have been a magnificent vehicle for a BBC production.
If you love special effects, indestructible aliens and ceaseless overacting, this movie is for you. However, the emphasis on action and effects at the expense of plot and the original story bring this production tumbling down from what could have been truly classic to something barely above mediocre. Recommended, but just barely.

Review: i saw this movie for the first time as a kid, i was enthralled. from the beginning, it gets suspencful, the military waiting for the Martians to emerge. then the killing of the priest, just tryin to make contact, and all Hell breaks loose!! 'LET EM HAVE IT" FIRE!! and nothing has any effect on the Martian War machines. then they unleash a horrendous counter-fire that devastates our military. truly classic and compelling cinematography as it unfolds before our very eyes! the music, the special effects, the acting, by the way, i met Ann Robinson at a sci-fi convention, what a classy lady. a true beauty.and i got her autograph! all in all, a superior Movie for the time it was made. i was so impressed with this movie, i made a model of the Martian War Machine, it has a 16 inch wingspan, ... this classic is a must see. you will never forget it. ... ...

Review: IF anyone were to ask me what is my favorite science fiction movie of all time, my answer would be THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. As I write this, the planet Mars is at opposition relative to the Earth, and is also at its closest distance to us since the late 1980s (about 41 million miles, I understand). It seems to me that this makes for an excellent excuse to look at, yet again, George Pal's 1953 production of THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. This movie became my favorite when I, too, saw it as a kid--being about 14 at the time. The script is credible, and the movie definitely keeps one's attention and interest as it unreels. Its 85 minute running time makes it move at a quick pace, so that each scene is not overly long. It is concise, offers no frills, and suspense is sustained. The special effects (even with the thin wires holding the Martian machines up over the California landscape)are outstanding. And I am always thrilled by the astronomical art of Chesley Bonestell accompanied by the spoken introduction by Sir Cedric Hardwicke at the film's beginning! I've read the H.G. Wells' novel several times. Do you know what I think would be interesting?: a full-fledged big-screen treatment of "The War of the Worlds" set as a period piece, with costumes, technology, etc., representative of the novel's time frame (late 1800s, early 1900s), and, of course, set in England. Surely it could be done! But, for the present movie, I think I'm going to take yet another look at it--now on DVD--tonight. Wanna join me?

Summary: '50's Sci-Fi at it's best!
Review: The best thing about 1950's Sci-Fi movies are their innocence. With limited know-how on special effects, the '50's movies had to rely on story and acting. Some movies stunk, while others were gems. "War of the World's" was one of the gems! This DVD didn't have all the additional features of the current releases (only had the original trailer) but what the heck. I bought this DVD for the movie! The picture and sound quality was great with all the wonderful advantages of DVD over tape. I also own the VHS but I'm afraid I'll donate it to the local library along with many other VHS movies I've replaced with DVD's.I never get tired of this movie (seen it at least a dozen + times). The build-up of suspense from when the "meteor" first lands through to the unstoppable alien attack is classic. You can cut the innocent '50's life-style (a simpler time) portrayed in this movie with a knife. The acting is first-rate. The effects are great (although not on par with today's efx). Wait for a cool evening, sit by the fire, make some popcorn and wo-la! You've got a perfect night of classic movie watching reminiscent of the good old days.

Summary: George Pal's masterpiece!
Review: I was fortunate enough to see this George Pal classic upon its original release in 1953, and it was an awesome experience for a 13 year old boy! I saw it on the big screen again in 1977, when it was re-released to cash in on the tremendous success of Star Wars, and it was just as good the second time around. The special effects held up very well, even against that formidable competition. And, of course, I'd seen it many times on TV and I have it also on videotape, so I really like this movie!
But this DVD edition was a bit of a disappointment. The image quality is good, as is the sound, but there are no bonus features at all. (I don't consider the movie trailer and a scene index to be "bonus" features any more, but "standard" DVD features.) A true classic of the sci-fi genre like this should have been given "star" treatment, with commentaries, behind-the-scenes stuff, etc. Why bother to bring it out on DVD if you're not going to give it the royal treatment? Still, it's worth being in anybody's DVD collection, if only for completeness. But if you just want to see the movie, the videotape edition is cheaper, and AMC shows it quite regularly.
