Rating: Summary: IF YOU LOVE THE BOOK, DON'T watch the 1979 cartoon Review: Not recommended for anyone who read the book or who is over five years of age upon viewing it for the first time. Can only assume that ALL the glowing reviews I read here were based on the fond memories and tainted by the undiscriminating tastes from a much younger age.I made the mistake of thinking the 1979 feature length cartoon actually had some basis in the book. A fatal mistake. Any resemblance to the book is over once it goes to cartoonland (much too soon) whereupon it becomes the most vapid, boring piece of marshmallow fluff ever seen. Inane repetitive lyrics will have anyone over the age of tot-hood crying, please not again! Take the absolute worst writer, songwriter or animator from the Disney Studio and even they wouldn't wipe their shoes on this sorry film. James Mason as Grimes the Sweep was the only saving grace to the film and unfortunately his screen time was all too short. No one else came close to his calibre of acting. Fine for tots. Adults - Don't waste your time. I can't recommend buying it. I can't even recommend renting it. Save your money to buy any one of the various beautifully illustrated copies of the book that are available. Read this timeless classic to your kids. It's not boring, trite, offensive or condescending AND it speaks to kids and adults of all ages. I love toons as much as any other big kid out there but this DVD gets dumped at the Good Will bin. With so many outstanding childrens' books and films available, don't bother with this dog.
Rating: Summary: This movie is like being on an acid trip. Review: Out of the distant corners of my memory came a single catchy song: "Hicocalorum" or something like that. I remembered it was from some old movie that was part live-action and part animation. After years of searching, I've found it, and so have you. Please note- this movie is bad. Yes, I know you thought it was awesome as a kid, but kids are easily impressed, especially back in '79 when I first saw this. This movie is wacked. It's hard to understand what most people are saying since the English/Welsh accent is very strong. The plot is pretty convoluted - many things go unexplained and make very little sense. Watching the animated part is like being on some kind of acid trip, but without actually having to take any. Please note, you are better off leaving this as a childhood memory, rather than buying this DVD and totally messing with your head.

Rating: Summary: Love the beginning, HATE IT WHEN IT TURNS INTO A CARTOON! Review: The live action parts are quite amazing, it's basically Disney with balls, great characters and acting, good writing and what seems to be a very interesting story. SUDDENLY an animation pops up worse than anything Filmmations ever released! Without looking, I counted at least 4 "dissapearing" objects throughout (due to faulty proof work) not to mention dialogue out of synch, horrible design and many more things too numerous to mention. [...]The best thing I can say about this (what could have been) great film, is that it claims the first Homosexual Sea-horse, and openly GAY cartoon character. Hurray!
Rating: Summary: Still a Childhood Fantasy Review: The only part I was absolutely afraid of was the scene with the home makers terrifying eyes when she caught the burgler. Even now I feel a spine tingling feeling. Other than that, I still laugh it all off.
Rating: Summary: Dickens meets Disney Review: This movie draws inspiration from many sources...Charles Dickens, Walt Disney animation, The Wizard of Oz, and even Monty Python! It starts out with the young boy "Thomas Aquinas" who is an orphan, and who works for a burglar who uses a chimney sweep business as a front. The boy is caught in the act, but not before he becomes enchanted with the little girl who lives in the big mansion he is robbing. He is chased through the woods until he comes to a lake. With nowhere left to go, he jumps into the lake. Surprisingly enough, he is able to breathe under the water. This is when the movie turns to animation. He is met by the denizens of the under water world - the Water Babies. The Water Babies are under attack, and Thomas helps them. The challenge is then to return Thomas to dry land, where he still might face punishment for a crime he didn't want to commit. The ending has a nice twist to it, but I don't want to give it away... This story will definitely stimulate your childs imagination, and is a great movie for the whole family to watch together.
Rating: Summary: song stayed with me for years Review: this movie has stuck in my head since i was little. i remember a sad song;anything that sticks in your head that long is good.
Rating: Summary: Water Babies: A Piece of Childhood Returns Review: This movie was a wonderful escape during childhood. I remember the colorful undersea characters and the fun music. I have found myself thinking of the tunes over the years and wondering if I would ever locate a copy of the movie. I finally found a copy and it's as if I've found a chapter from my elementary days. I look forward to watching my children's expressions while viewing this great film.
Rating: Summary: A Favorite!!! Review: This was one of my childhood favorites. I can't believe I have found it, and at such a reasonable price. I just watched it last night, and the memories came flooding back! (I am 25 and do not have children yet!) When the day comes that I do have children, The Water Babies will surely be one of their favorites as well!
Rating: Summary: Unforgetful Review: Water babies is one of the most unforgettable movies of my childhood.
