Rating: Summary: A tear jerker Review: My sister and I watched this movie last night (Wed 21st March 2001) and were reduced to blubbering fools by the time it ended. We had our little 2 yr old Jack Russell terrier beside us in his doggy bed. Archie our dog is the spitting image of Skip in the movie. Mind you he slept thru the whole film and was woken at the end when we were both crying our hearts out. What a great film and what a superb cast...... Even if u are not an animal lover you should see this film and being based on a true story is even more reason. How unconditional is the love of a Jack Russell terrier!!! They are truly loving and devoted. After seeing this DVD I had a dream of telling my workmates about it and crying as I told them, thats the impact it had on me..... A must see for all ages....
Rating: Summary: Think back to your first Dog as a young boy and then watch. Review: I think people keep expecting this movie to be more than whatit was intented to be, I see people giving it 4 stars and saying that" It was just another boy and his dog film...but " whilethat is true, usualy most people are smart enough pick that out fromthe cover. This film has to start with that basic premise, but byseeing it for what it is, it becomes so much more. I liked it so muchI bought the sound track. Trust me when I say it is not a clichemovie, If you love animals it will make you cry. For me it's tough tofind that in a movie. Rent it first, though, I did and I am buyingthe DVD ..., tomorow. END
Rating: Summary: Heartfelt, Heartbreaking. Brilliant. Review: There is a rare breed of family films that come out, that everyone will love. And I seriously believe that the last Family Friendly to love film was A Christmas Story, which for some reason became the premier holiday film for anyone. Now comes My Dog skip, an emotionally true film that holds a rare impact on anyone. It is about a kid named Willie, who is a book worm, a loser at school and has really no friends. He then gets a cute Jack Russell Terrier for his 9th birthday. Then comes sayings like "ohh, he is so cute" out of your mouth. At that point you're about to hold a gun to your head thinking I have fallen for a sappy children film, that is sentimental and tacky. But really you become drawn to the film with its attractive, and well acted cast, of colorful stars. Frankey Muniz from TV's Malcolm in The Middle plays Willie, and that is when you realize that he is actually a very good actor. Charming, good hearted and somewhat attractive on screen. Diane Lane plays Willies mom, who gets him the dog. And Kevin Bacon plays his one legged dad, who is a war veteran. And Luke Wilson plays the hero next door who goes of to the war and comes back, a burned out drunk. Doesn't seem to attractive? Well it actually is. My Dog skip supplies the regular, but still funny. I think my dog can do tricks, but when I tell him sit he rolls over, laughs. You know the stupid sentimental jokes in every dog movie imaginable. But there is some adventure for the wanting kid soul, some spookiness of a dare-you-to go into the graveyard thing, and of course the bad guys who a grave robbers. Who of course say some things to Willie that they probably don't men (but what if they Do?) That would be weird wouldn't it? My Dog Skip wins over some serious hearts, with it's somewhat self aware snappy writing, some hearty laughs, and of course it also will pull about 3 tears from your eyes, make that 4, actually make that 5, to be honest probably about 50, and that isn't a joke. It is a sentimental film about a boy and his dog. It is almost routine, and almost could be a bad film that is only appealing to kids. It is one I would have to recommend to anyone, if you want a good cry, but want to feel really uplifted. That is another plus, it has some dramatic intensity, that kids might not like, and a couple of scenes why you just have to yell "NO!!!" really loud at the screen, no matter what your age. It is the most heartfelt film I have ever scene, and if you don't laugh, or cry, or enjoy, I would seriously get help, because you are the type of people that like to see dogs tortured. If you are one of those people, don't get near me. But if you are the types of people that either, like dogs, but don't want to own one, have a dog, but not sure you want to anyway, or your just the person who can't live with out a dog, then this is the film for you. If you own a dog. After you watch all of the film, you just want to go give it a hug.
Rating: Summary: Familiar story, has touching moments Review: Who among us can NOT tell a story about a young boy who gets a dog and the two become inseperable? Lassie, Shiloh, Old Yeller, the story is a familiar one. Skip is like all of the other K-9 heroes who spread sunshine in the heart and soul of a boy who is proud to call him his dog. "My Dog Skip" is every bit as sincere in its story telling as all predecessors. There are several "moments" where I had to keep from getting watery-eyed. Kids will love this movie. For us grown ups the magic of "Lassie Comes Home" wasn't quite re-captured, but it's still an enjoyable film. The WWII Mississippi setting with an ambitious authenticity (as this is a true story) is a nice touch. There are many laughs packed in this sentimental story, it's a true family pleaser. Teenagers may not go for this kind of movie, but kids and their parents will enjoy it!
Rating: Summary: this is a wonderful movie Review: like many of the people who have reviewed this movie have said i too thought this movie was a film for little kids when i saw the movie trailer when it came to theaters in 1999. my dog skip premired on hbo this past saturday and last night nothing else was on so i decided to watch it and let me tell you that i wasn't really prepaired for what i was about to watch. i was expecting one of those lassie type movies or a air bud movie with a cute little dog that did all this funny stuff but what i got was a nice story based on someone's life and a nice little movie that was very moving. i personally started to get the feeling a little ways into the movie when the dog was given to willis (played by then little known actore frankie munez who of course is now in one of the best/funniest t.v. sitcoms ever malcom in the middle). it always makes me a little nervouse with animals (expecially dogs and cats and other family pets)in movies like this cause i hate seeing animals killed (i was even mad that the dog in gladiator was killed so that tells you how i am). anyways...like i said and many other said the story is true (which i didn't know until it flashed up on the screen and i knew that it had to be more than a air bud movie). anyone with a pet (expecially a dog)may have a hard time making it through certain parts in this film i will say (i admit to getting very teary eyed in some parts and i'm a 22 year old guy into punk rock!)my dog skip is definetly worth viewing and i plan on buying this one at somepoint because it touched and moved me that much. to anyone who has ever had a certain bond with a dog or cat and felt like they were closer to them then any friend was and sometimes that's all you really had (i've been there and sadly i lost the last real piece of my childhood last may when my 20 year old cat(who was ran over 3 years earlier but bounced back and had more energy then a kitten and she also had a few diseases)died. it was one of the saddest days i've ever been through (the process of taking her to the vet to have her put to sleep and me being the last person to hold her and see her)but that's apart of life and animals are just as important as people and this movie will definetly make you realize that. go rent/buy my dog skip now and prepair to laugh, get angry, and cry because that's what this film most likely will do. it's a film for everyone not just kids because this is something alot of us have gone through and it deserves to be seen by all!
Rating: Summary: My Dog Skip Review: My Sister watched this Movie "My Dog Skip" last year, she told me to watch it. Due to the recent loss of a long time friend of 13 years (my cat), I decided at that time "not" to view this film for awhile. After finally watching the movie on HBO, I'm sorry that I did not see the film sooner. I have just recently ordered the DVD and the Book "My Dog Skip" as well. If you watch it, watch it with a box of kleenex...you'll need it! A wonderful film and very well done.
Rating: Summary: Don't pass this one up...... Review: Caught this incredible movie on HBO the other night---wow, where do I begin.First off, getting Frankie Muniz to portray the young Willie was a perfect choice. This young actor has talent written all over him; as evidenced by his winning performances in Malcolm in the Middle. The movie itself is the story of how Frankie grows up from a young boy to a young adult---with his loyal canine friend "Skip" by his side. The ending is a real tear-jerker; Skip gets injured by some moonshiners. As he lies on the vet's table, you don't know if he will survive and poor Frankie is bawling his little eyes out. At this point, any viewer who isn't teary-eyed as well has to be made of stone!!Definitely one of the better boy and dog stories I have seen in a while.
Rating: Summary: For all dog lovers! Review: I have only one word for this movie...WONDERFUL! Being a proud owner of a Jack Russell terrier myself, I find this movie especially touching to me. Seeing the pup grows and enage itself in mischief...sometimes I just couldn't differentiate between Skip and my dog...I guess all dogs are alike. Definitly a 5 stars movie. Now for the DVD, overall ratings is good. Picture scores a 5. The colours and outline of picture quality are very good. However, as this is a movie with little action scences, the sound effect is "so-so-only", with only a couple of scences ringing those real surround speakers of mine. 4.5 for the sound. Two commentaries were included with the DVD. One with Frankie Muniz and the animal trainer, the other with director Jay Russell. Both adds to the fun when you watch the movie again. An added plus for this DVD is that it comes in two versions of the movie. One side comes in wide screen format(preserving the aspect ratio of its theatrical exhibition) while the other side features a modified full screen format to fit into your TVs. It would be perfect if there's a feature on the "making of My Dog Skip". But I guess they didn't do it as this movie is not a box-office. However, for a DVD that sells for less than US$15, I guess I should not be asking for too much. The only complain I have for this DVD is that it comes in a snap-close paper box which I hate. But I guess I can bear with this minor flaw. Anyway, nothing's perfect!
Rating: Summary: A young boy in the fourties gets a dog for his birthday. Review: My Dog Skip tells the story of Willie Morris (1935?-1999) who gets a dog for his birthday. Willie's (Frankie Muniz) best friend named Dink (Luke Wilson) goes off to War World II. Willie's mother (Diane Lane) decides to get Willie a dog for his birthday. But his father (Kevin Bacon) vatoes the idea. Willie names the dog Skipper, Skip for short. In the spring, Willie's father lets him join Little League. And he hits him and Skip runs away. Willie Morris sends out a search party for Skip and his father goes the police. My thoughts on My Dog Skip. First, if you are going to watch this movie, I reccomend to watch this movie with a box of tissues (because there is drama in this movie.) It was to bad that the real Willie Morris died before this movie. I reccomend this is you love drama movies. Plus there are some actors that you may or may not ever heard of before. I must warn parents that this movie does have language going on (so the best thing to do, if don't want your kids to hear bad lanuage, is to wait and see if an edited verison shows on tv in the future. Plus there is also some violence. So it seems to me, that this is Stuart Little in resverse.
Rating: Summary: A Very Touching Movie Review: My roommate and I sat down to a rental copy of this movie. In her words "if this doesn't move you, you must be a sociopath." I second that thought. This movie got to me, probably because I am an animal lover. We own 4 cats between us, and I hugged them tight after watching this movie. I grew up from the age of 11 with Great Danes, and this reminds me of the love and companionship that we receive from our pets. It also reminded me of the heartbreaking loss we feel when they pass away. Frankie Muniz, Kevin Bacon, Diane Lane, and Luke Wilson all gave great performances. Nice cinematography, good locations, great direction. I never saw this in a movie theater when it came out because I thought it was a "kiddie" film and not for me. Boy, was I wrong. A very sweet and touching film, especially for those of us that have had dogs in our lives at one time or another.
