Summary: Buy the VHS
Review: Ahhhh, what a great movie. I cry at the end every time. I remember when I was young and prayed for the safe return of the astronauts of Apollo 13. However, I am SEVERELY dissappointed with the widescreen DVD. Those who created it did not use the original film, but chopped top and bottom from the fullscreen VHS version. There are many instances when this is evident, but the most glaring is the scene in the back yard of the Lovell house after the walk on the moon when Jim says, "I want to go back there". When the scene opens, he is cut off at mid-thigh and you never see below his knees. On the fullscreen VHS you can see his shoes. When I buy the widescreen, I want the WHOLE movie, not less than the fullscreen VHS tape. Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad. Buy the VHS.

Summary: Chris' "Apollo 13" Review
Review: Apollo 13 is one of the better movies that Tom Hanks stars in. The movie depicts the steps going into, and coming out of, the Apollo 13 mission. The movie begins as any normal movie, but adds the twist of suspense and drama that is really hard to find in any movie. As in the real-life version of the mission, when NASA was running the Apollo Moon missions, the explosion that crippled their only hope for space survival, down to the improvisation of manuevers to get the three astronauts home, down to the T. I rate this movie with 5 stars, for its drama and suspense scenes, and 5 stars for the director, for putting together such a great movie.

Summary: NASA's Finest Hours
Review: Apollo 13, the movie, starring Tom Hanks, takes us back in time, to the historical moon space mission disaster. An fuel tank has exploded reducing available energy and compromised possibilities of a moon landing. NASA makes the tough decision to abort the moon landing and focuses on the larger problem of getting the men home. This is NASA finest hour and the director leaves the viewer cheering as the men survive their ordeals.

Emergency response is by the book. In other words the response has a guarenteed result. NASA's think tank is a group of smart and young brains capable of solving difficult problems. The problems are almost insurmountable: depleting battery power, skip possiblilities caused by wrong reentry angles into earth atmosphere, heaters offline saving energy for reentry resulting is freezing temperatures, and air recirculation failure with no automatic backup. NASA must solve all of these problems before Apollo 13 reaches earth after traveling over a million miles.

The air recirculation crisis has been raise as a top priority problem. Working around the clock the team considers all the available resources, amount of power, and time remaining. The group leader brings the supplies of the available resources and dumps them on a table. The team must figure out step by step how to manual create an air recirculation system before the astronauts sufficate. A solution is discovered and the steps detailed. Command center verbally walks the Apollo 13 crew through the process of assembling an air recirculation system. The system works and saves the lives of the crew. Splash down was great and I cheered NASA acheivement and consider this a great film of the power of the human spirit.

Summary: All American Feel Good Movie
Review: This movie is very well done, with solid performances by a really excellent cast. No disrespect to the astronauts, but I found the performances by the ground crews and flight control a lot more interesting.

Gather the family. It's that kind of movie

Summary: Easily One of My Favorite Movies of All Time
Review: This docu-drama vividly portrays how NASA's greatest catastrophe became a very heroic event when three astronauts, Jim Lovell (who wrote the book on which this film is based, played by Tom Hanks), Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) and Fred Haise (Bill Paxton),
embark on a voyage to the moon. During the course of their journey, an explosion seriously damages the spacecraft, resulting in the crew having to attempt to get back to Earth right away. The threesome finds themselves struggling to survive inside the damaged capsule. Meanwhile, back at NASA, mission controllers find themselves also racing against time along with Apollo 13 as they integrate and interact with the damaged capsule and the three people within as they try to get the damaged spacecraft back to Earth at a distance of 205,500 miles . . .

Apollo 13 is a film that Ron Howard did a superb job at directing. Howard has proved himself, in my opinion, to be one of the best directors ever, right up there with Ridley Scott and James Cameron. The casting is perfect, and each and every person portrayed is convincing in their roles. It is a human interest film. I wholeheartedly reccomend this film to anyone. It is a movie almost anyone can enjoy. 5 stars.

Summary: I felt the horror in the space capsule and held my breath...
Review: This 1995 film, directed by Ron Howard, is the true story of the 1970 moon mission that went wrong. The three astronauts were nearly lost. But due to the dedicated men in the Mission Control Center in Houston, the astronauts made it back to earth alive.

Naturally, I knew the outcome of this story. I remember watching it on television way back in 1970. But that didn't stop me from completely enjoying this film. From the very first moment, the tension mounts and I was completely swept up in the film, so involved that I didn't move away from my VCR for a moment. I understand that it was all recreated and the details completely authentic. And the film techniques available today allowed the experience itself to come alive.

I was filled with emotion throughout. I smiled wistfully at the fact that someone described the computer used then as one that only took up the size of a room. I felt the pride of the families along with the fear. I re-experienced the way life was in 1970 and the impact that the space program had on our imaginations. I cheered at the resourcefulness of the men on the ground whose job it was to bring the astronauts down alive. And, looking back now, I realized how primitive their equipment was compared to what we take for granted today.

I didn't really expect to enjoy this film. After all, I knew the outcome. I was unprepared for the real tears that stung my eyes as I shared the horror in the space capsule and held my breath as hope sparked and then waned over and over again. It was a miracle that they survived and lived to tell about it. It's a great story, well told, and worthy of all the awards it won. Highly recommended.
