Summary: How did Disney miss this one?!!!!!
Review: This movie was as powerful a film as I have ever seen. The performances by this children are just outstanding, and to read that it was made by a first time director! I highly reccomend this to any family looking to share an entertaining and emotional evening together. You will have lots to talk about after. Thank you Mark Steven Johnson.

Summary: Joe Mazzello Hits The Mark Again!
Review: This movie is far more than a story about a kid on a mission who gets picked on because of it. It shows life as it really is from a kid's point of view, without the sugar coating so many movies give it. The plot is easy to follow and fairly obvious from the outset, but the story is good and the actors make it believable (Thanks again, Joe).

Why did this movie do so poorly at the box office? Because it was not promoted properly. Obviously whoever was responsible for marketing this movie didn't have a fraction of the faith that Simon has.

If you liked "Simon Birch", you should watch "The Cure" (1995, Joe Mazzello, Brad Renfro).

Summary: One of the best movies, I have seen in a long time
Review: I would have given this movie Five stars, but the ending made me change my mind. I am not going to say anything about the ending, because it will give the movie away for the people that haven't seen it. But this was one of the best movie's that I haven seen in a long time. It goes to show you that some people just don't care what others thing about you. That is what this movie told me. Simon was a kid that was different from everybody else and he always thought that God made him the way he was for a certain reason and he was right. There was a lot of things that he didn't understand about some of the things that other people did and got into trouble sometimes. But it all worked out for the better at the end of the movie.

Summary: A film about a dwarf that DWARFS all others.
Review: This film makes you run the gamut of emotions. It makes you happy, sad, angry, excited, etc. Not only is this film my favorite of 1998, but it is also my favorite of the whole decade and also of all time. There is just no comparing other films to this one. Ian Michael Smith, who played the title role, was especially powerful. This was the young actor's first film. However, you would not know that from his performance. He played the role with the percision of a veteran actor. He formed the character with the same percision. He brought Simon Birch to life. It was as if Simon Birch was living through Ian Michael Smith. And that is not because Ian Michael Smith is a dwarf actor playing a dwarf character. Yes, Ian Michael Smith is a dwarf who stopped growing at age 8, but that holds no meaning with me. The young actor made his character seem like a GIANT. The character had so much faith in God and himself. I'm sure we have all felt, at one time or another, left out or even degraded because of the way we look. I know I have. I was able to relate myself with Simon Birch. I believe, like Simon Birch did, that I was made extremely different for a reason beyond anything I could ever hypothesize. I also have a lot of faith in the Lord. Overall, I think this film makes people realize that we are all different and special for our own reasons. I hope that others who see this film will at least have a better appreciation of themselves as a person and for others, especially those who are different from the rest of us. And I think Ian Michael Smith's performance will examplify that last statement.

Summary: Do not be swayed by the critics--see this movie first!
Review: If you decide on what movies to see, rent, or buy based on movie critics' reviews, I beg you not to in the case of Simon Birch; see the movie first and decide for yourself. I found the movie to be heartwarming and I enjoyed Simon's "unorthodox" behavior. Critics described Simon as a crass kid. I think Simon simply called them as he saw them and had a maturity beyond his years. He was a good kid with heart. Although the movie did have its fair share of sap, sentimentality, and cliched characters, it worked and in no way diminished my enjoyment of the movie. Even the predictable ending (you knew Simon was going to do something heroic and validate his belief that God has a plan for all of us) did not detract from the movie. Sometimes, it's simply a good thing to watch a movie that makes you feel that you too will be a better person when it counts. Simon Birch delivers, regardless of the critics' brain cramps! And, I'm not ashamed to say that I, too, loved Joe's mother.

Summary: It's on my All Time Top Ten!
Review: This was one of the best movies I have ever seen. It'll make you cry, but thats just because it's so beautiful. Don't miss this movie. It's definitely one for your own library.

Summary: Our whole family loved this movie!!!
Review: Last night my husband brought home Simon Birch for our weekly "movie night". Our three children, ages 9, 12 and 15 absolutely loved it. I am a high school teacher who deals with students who pick on other students and this movie was very realistic as far as Joe and Simon's treatment was concerned. All of us watched the movie and had a wonderful discussion afterwards about it. Truly, a movie that we can all learn from.

Summary: interesting
Review: I saw this movie before I read A Prayer for Owen Meany. At the time, I enjoyed it: the cast is quite good (in fact, all of the actors give highly commendable performances), the plot moves along nicely, and there are suitable amounts of humor and saddness.

But.

Then I read A Prayer for Owen Meany, and my entire opinion of the movie changed. It may be unfair to compare the two, but the power of the movie is nothing compared to the novel. I still look on the movie as something I enjoyed, but it pales in the sheer brilliance of the novel.

My advice: Rent the movie; don't buy it. Spend the money on A Prayer for Owen Meany instead, and then you can experience what the movie is only a pale shadow of.
