Summary: Inspirational! What a great movie should be!
Review: A spectacular real life story about one boy's struggle to escape his dead-end future in a decaying West Virginia coal mining town. In many senses, a model of the American dream.

Summary: this is what true true schooling is all about!!!
Review: i am a homeschooling parent, and this is what home school is all about. finding out what your student is interested in and going with it. everything just fell into place, physic,trig.etc..when you give a person a reason to want something they will work hard to acheive it, despite negitive influences. what an inspiration to all who watches this, if this doesn't give you the hope and encouragement to reach for your star, nothing will. Americas kids need this kind of movie to inspire them, not all the rotten, horror movies, videos, and music that only encourages them to take the lives away from the ones who want to reach for the stars and never get that chance. to the makers of October Sky, this homeschool mom gives it a great big 5 stars.

Summary: Inspiring
Review: The first word that comes to my mind when thinking of October Sky is inspiring. I grew up in a small town and I could relate to a lot of things that happened in the movie. I read the book after I saw the movie for the first time and I loved it. A truly wonderful movie that I and my two nephews enjoyed. The actor who played Homer is so cute, too! Just an added bonus to the greatness of the movie! :)

Summary: Tremendous Film
Review: This was indeed a tremendous film! It is about a couple of kids growing up in the late 1950s/early 1960s (okay, October 1957 to be more exact) in a small West Virginian town. The town is centered around mining coal and the only real hope of getting out of this 'hickville' is to become a football athlete and perhaps win a scholarship to play at the college level. However, the main character does indeed try but fails. Then he hears about the possibility of winning the national science fair and thus obtain a scholarship in science. It is from here that the main character and his friends decide to build a rocket in the hopes of winning this science fair. There are many other side-stories, and it is based on a true story. Wonderful.

Summary: cool!
Review: There are only two words that I have to say about "October Sky"... It's one of the best movies i've ever seen! Actually...thats about nine words, but, you get the point!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Inspirational top to bottom
Review: This movie is insanely inspirational. If you buy any positive movie for your collection, think about this one. It tells the story of Homer Hickam and the Rocket boys. Just after the USSR launched Sputnik (the first manmade satellite), the US had to play catch-up.

At this time is when a kid (Homer) decides to build a Rocket. The movie is the quest to build a working rocket and get the hell out of the little coal mining community he is stuck in. He has dreams to get to college and work for NASA.

Will he accomplish his dreams??? Hells yea! After he makes it through two science fairs and his father. This is one of those rare movies that will make you a better person for having seen it. Do yourself the favor and get this movie.

Summary: Gyllenhaal is magical...a true star of tomorrow
Review: October Sky is a fantastic film...it has all the elements of a great movie, but more importantly is a true "emotional experience." In the era of teen flicks such as Scream and Cruel Intentions, it is refreshing to see a movie based in a school and with teenagers that actually look and act like teenagers.

But the most striking thing about this movie is the young man playing the lead role of Homer Hickham. Jake Gyllenhaal deserves all the accolades for how great this movie is. He is the rare actor who looks through the camera instead of into it. His eyes are piercing and earnest, and you really believe he's just a boy from West Virginia trying to make something of his life. (And his southern West Virginia accent is very convincing).

He is the "good" future of young Hollywood. It is clear he wants to study and become a better actor--not rest on the laurels of one good performance.

Chris Cooper is wonderful as a father who simply doesn't understand his son's dream, while Natalie Cannerday brings just enough spunk to make Mrs. Hickham interesting. Other notable performances include Laura Dern and relative unknown William Scott.

But make no mistake...Gyllenhaal steals the show.

Summary: An excellent, touching, amazing film...
Review: This movie is now my favorite movie of ALL time. I heard from lots of people that this movie is quite amazing and that I have to see this movie. So I put it off for a while renting it from my local Blockbuster but then one night after dinner, I was scrolling through my digital cable guide list and then I saw "October Sky" coming on at 8:00 and so I decided to sit down and watch the movie...I must say, from the moment the opening credits first appeared I was glued to the TV, I couldn't stop watching it!

It is truly a touching and heart-wrenching story that leaves you amazed on how we can achieve our goals with the effort that we put out to them if we truly want to meet them.

The story is about a young man named Homer Hickam who is inspired and intrigued in rocketry and decides that he is going to build a rocket. Before you know it, the whole town, which is Coalwood, starts making fun of him with the exception of a few people, which are his mother, a few of his friends, and some people that work in the mine at Coalwood.

The main idea and theme of the story is dreams can be achieved no matter what anybody thinks.

Once I was finished watching this movie, I immediately ordered it. Everytime I watch it, I never turn it off and continue it later. It will leave you touched after everytime you watch it.

I encourage you to purchase this movie, you will not be disappointed.
