Summary: october sky-one of the best of '99
Review: This film is a great film that anybody would love-young or old. It taps into the kid in all of us, how many of us dreamed we could be astronauts when we grew up. Many who will watch this movie will relate to these kids lives, wanting to get out of the samll town that you live in and just go somewhere and to be somebody.

Summary: The # 1 Film of 1999

Summary: Uplifting reflection of the true spirit of WV
Review: Not only can we relate to the time period of being a teen during the 50s and 60s, we can appreciate the picture of WV portrayed in October Sky. There is intelligent life in the mountains of this great state. Homer Hickam should be congratulated on writing about his aspirations to escape predetermined expectations and his achievement of goals that proved beneficial to the country. This video celebrates family, education, friendship, commitment, teamwork, hardwork, patriotism and achievement. The performances are outstandingly believable. I'd recommend this as a forum for teachers and parents who want the young people in their care to aim for the stars, and for young people themselves who are tired of being locked into sociatal expectations and are willing to work hard to reach their goals. An added plus is the gorgeous score. The music beautifully underlines the movement of the story.

Summary: Inspiring movie and a great family film.
Review: The story of kids determined to work their way out of a small coalmining town is well written and acted. It doesn't rely on special effects, just good screenwriting and acting. A little slow in the middle, but overall highly recommended.

Summary: Outstanding story; exceptionally well rendered on screen.
Review: 'October Sky' was exceptionally well done. The acting by both Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Cooper was superb and the set was amazingly realistic for the time and place. However, the fact that the story is true brings the major impact. Although I tend not to be an outwardly emotional person, I found the movie to be very moving. This was in part due to the fact that I grew up in a similar time and place. My father was a workaholic in the textile manufacturing business in a small town; I was inspired by Sputnik and became a PhD scientist who designed part of the Launch Processing System at Kennedy Space Center. 'October Sky' caused much nostalgic soul-searching for me, as I am sure it did, or will, for many others who were boys in the 1950s.

Summary: Brilliant!
Review: Excellent example, how one should follow his dreems, work in team and after hard work get awarded (see other reviewers!) Additionally it shows that the life in Western and Eastern Hemisphaeres in the 50ties were not as different, as it perhaps appears to be - that is after what my parents told me - they were 17 in 1957, but grow up between 55-57 lat. N and 22-26 long. E

A must see for every teenager today!

Summary: Testament to the goodness and conviction of the human spirit
Review: "OCTOBER SKY" is a testament to the goodness of, and the conviction of, the human spirit. It portrays, so excellently, respect and love in family relationships, even when those involved have difficulty expressing what it is they feel for each other. "To thine own self be true" and reap the rewards was never truer than in this movie------not always an easy road, but a very emotional and precious reward: one's soul.

Summary: Trite and Formulatic
Review: The movie wasn't awful, but it was certainly nothing exceptional. The (true) story was interesting enough, but the film followed that same pattern we've all seen a hundred times before: poor boy from a dying town has a dream, and with the help of that one special teacher who makes him believe in himself, he overcomes all sorts of adversity to convince himself, his town, and of course the requisite father who Just Doesn't Understand that he can REALLY BE SOMEBODY. Of course, he triumphs in the end. Not bad, just unoriginal. Instead of this movie, try 'This Boy's Life,' a much better adaption of T.S. Eliot's autobiography.

Summary: Outstanding
Review: A heart warming story that shows what someone with enough determination is able to accomplish despite overwhelming odds.

Summary: For anyone that has a big dream. This is for you!
Review: This movie is the story of my life. It made me realize now that I have the power to accomplish my dream, even when it seems impossible. "October Sky" captured my heart and soul. I now know that someday I will work for NASA. Everyday I look up and wonder. When will it be my turn?
