Summary: A Classic
Review: Anyone who views this movie will desire to watch it again and again. My seven year old absolutely fell in love with this movie and I remembered the days when real music existed. The soundtrack is awesome, the choreography is uplifting and the acting is well.... YOU REALLY SEE MICHAEL JACKSON AS MICHAEL JACKSON. This movie is a must buy.

Summary: This movie is awful!
Review: The soundtrack is excellent! The movie is simply bad, and the sets and locations are some of the ugliest things I have ever seen. Was this entire movie shot in a garbage dump? Simply watching this thing is depressing. Do yourself a favor and watch the original with Judy Garland. It'll put a smile on your face again and again.

Summary: It's a classic
Review: I am one of those people who grew up w/this movie in my VCR all the time. I loved the characters, the songs, and overall urban theme this storyline was given. For those people who have nothing to relate to w/this movie, I can see why they gave it low marks. For those like me who loved this movie back in the day, I'm estatic it's on DVD.

Summary: What Can I Say.....
Review: Oh boy, where to start? This seems to be one of those movies where you either hate it or love it. This update of The Wizard of Oz, while for years vilified, has seemed to have gathered a cult classic-like following in recent years. It bears little resemblance to the 1939 Judy Garland masterpiece, or even for that matter, to the Broadway musical upon which it was based. The original musical was light and entertaining, inspirational and fun. This 1978 motion picture is a pretentious adaptation tht simply tries too hard. the film-makers turned the simplistic story of a young girl lost in a strange land into an overly glitzy, glamorous, and gaudy film. Despite this, there are some awesome moments in this movie, most notably: the stunning New York City visuals, great performances by Mabel King as the Wicked Witch and Ted Ross as the Cowardly Lion, wonderful music, and impressive and incredibly choreographed dances. However even that can't save the movie. It still manages to fall flat, not living up to the promise, vision, or scope of the simple story upon which it is based.

Summary: A Classic For All Races
Review: I will never forget being four years old and watching the "regular" Wizard of Oz. No doubt, a classic film that I enjoy to this day. But, I also remember the very first time I ever watched The Wiz. I was captivated by the music, excited about the dancing and choreography, and pleased to see that the color change in the orginal film actually includes people of color in The Wiz. I have watched The Wiz more tham 200 times. I can practically say the movie word for word! Now at the age of 24, I still will belt one of Michael Jackson or Diana Ross's songs out in the shower! It is of utmost importance that you expose your children to the other side if this tale. I side that presents the exact same story line with more pizazz. I am encouraged by this film simply because I see myslef as a child dancing in front of the television...excited to see a new spin on the classic. GET THIS FOR YOUR KIDS! 5 STARS...5 THUMBS UP!

Summary: Give It A Chance
Review: I first saw The Wiz when I was about fourteen or fifteen. I had never heard of it, but I love The Wizard of Oz, and when I saw The Wiz sitting there on the Blockbuster Video shelf I snapped it up so that I could compare the two.

Well, at first I wasn't all that impressed. It's not at all like the Judy Garland picture, and it really deviates from the book...but you know what? I watched it again. And again. And it really grew on me!

Diana Ross *was* a bit old to be playing Dorothy...if they were trying to pass her off as a little girl. They changed her age to 24. Michael Jackson was touching as the Scarecrow, a creature who believes he doesn't have a brain, but actually comes up with most of their escape plans when there's danger. Nipsy Russel (spelling?) was convincing as the Tin Man, playing a metal carnival barker who wants a heart so that he can love. And Ted Ross was, I think, the best man they could have picked to play the Cowardly Lion!

All I'm saying is to try it. If you don't like it then, you can't say you didn't try! ^_^

Summary: Awesome and Exciting to watch!
Review: The music, Micheal, Diane Ross, etc., everything was great. This is great for kids to see the other side of the Wizard of OZ. Great, musical movie.

Summary: Sing along but don't mind the plot
Review: Even though it saddens me to think that the American Black community needed to make there own version of "The Wizard of Oz", it clearly kicks **** over the original classic of the era.

I would like to see this redone today with some big artists and not make it all black but an eclectic mix of all nations playing the roles. However all things aside - a movie of this class and statue is guaranteed to find pride of place on your DVD cabinet.

Buy and enjoy a classic!

Summary: Ugh!
Review: I remember seeing this movie long ago when I was younger,I didn't really enjoy it at all.It made me fall asleep. It was really cheesy and corny.I was like what do they think there doing!!!Now that I'm a bit older, every time I think about I just laugh and shake my head.I still be like what were they thinking doing a (corny)movie like this?!I just saw it the other night in a Blockbusters,(on dvd and vhs),I just snickered, picked it up and looked at it like, mmm, mmm, mmm, this movie was horrible.I mean Diana Ross seemed to old to play the role as "Dorothy", (though I don't believe that was the name of her character). And Michael's make-up and outfit was just irritating.I was going to ask my father to rent it so I could just see it one more time (just to see if it was just that bad),but I just said, nah,it's not worth it!It was just that corny! Now the Wizard of Oz that I know with Judy Garland, was way better and much more memorable to me than the "Wiz".I'm 16 now,and I still like to watch "The Wizard of Oz",it was the best! And Judy Garland did a great job singing "Somewhere over the rainbow".Some classics you just can't go behind and redo!
