Rating: Summary: The Grinch Review: I have long since enjoyed this little tale about a hermit living high up on mountaintop overlooking Whoville in dusgust. I recently accompanied a young cousin, & had the opportunity to view this latest presentation, & though it is rather slow in the beginning, it really picks up after Little Sarah Loohoo invites The Grinch to receive an award down in town. A request made by the Mayor triggers a memory sequence in which the Grinch experiencd some rather traumatic events in his childhood, & all Hell breaks loose after that. He serves in his capacity as villain, as revealing the programmed habits of the townspeople who celebrate xmas, motivated by nothing more than greed. The Grinch asks the question, "is that all xmas means to you?" This sheds a luciferic light on them all, revealing them for the money & gift-hungry drones that the are. In a particularly memorable scene, The Grinch acts as accuser, then proceeds to lay waste their town. I can already hear someone saying to Me, "you think too much". To which I would answer, "no, you think too little". There are subtleties that can be picked up if one only wishes to see them. The "Evil" character in most any presentation, serves in his or her capacity as a catylist. Indeed, in most cases, "evil" serves as a catylist for change. In this respect, it serves as a positive & cleansing element that instructs in harsh lessons for the commoner. However, since I Am acquainted with the original story, the outcome was predictable, although the pervasive question remained: "What does xmas have to with having a 'big heart'? Or the ability to show compassion towards those who deserve it?" Personally, I do not celebrate this xian holiday, but may participate in certain activities for the gift factor. The Winter Solstice is My Yuletide. It is all relative. So, when The Grinch removes all of their precious little holy-day decorations, the whos begin to realize their erronious materialistic activities, & realize the root of their holiday. They consequently gather together in a large cluster, & celebrate the "true spirit" of xmas. "Evil" has once again purified the lies & deceptions. Even through this quaint Seuss tale, the neccessity of catastrophe proves itself evident, as pain is indeed a harsh, though sometimes neccessary element. In its own way, this film speaks to the efficacy of The 9th Satanic Statement. There is one female member amongst the whos who is just entranced by The Grinch, as she practically has orgasms as he displays his misanthropy. The "bad guy" lure. There's always at least one. It would have been nice to preclude or follow this film with the original animation. Carey makes for quite an appropriate Grinch character, & the costuming was very sufficient. Hail The Grinch!
Rating: Summary: Good movie, But, Not The Original. Review: This edition of the Grinch is good. Nicely done by Jim Carey. Though, understanding him is not the easiest. You may need to turn on the subtitles the first time you watch it. In my opinion, stick with the original cartoon.
Rating: Summary: Dr.Seuss Would Turn Puce! Review: Someone was smoking too much Who-Hashâ„¢,when they decided to make this fiasco! I will give them credit for the visual side,it looks resplendantly Seussian! But,that's where it ends. The film cannot supply an entertainment to match the visuals. And the biggest part of the mess : Jim Carrey. Yes,once again,we are shown Jim's range: every character is a babbling schizophrenic. ( Worked for "The Mask",hasn't worked sinced. ). The make-up looks like a cross between a bassett hound and an alpaca, covered in green paint. Nowhere near as evil or frightening as the original drawings,or cartoon. Then there's the whimping out of the character. The Grinch can't just be evil, for the sake of evil, there's 90 minutes to pad out folks,no....now he's worried about ecology, family, unrequitted love, and the commercialization of Christmas. ( Maybe the writers were trying to kill two birds by creating a Grinch-Charlie Brown hybrid? ). Puh-leez. The Grinch was mean, for the sake of meanness,we don't need a psychological overhaul,to make him "accessable" to the "modern audience". The Boris Karloff version lives on,because it was straight forward, with no use for cute-i-fication. ( And yes,Jimbo even makes a complete mess of the "Grinch Song". ). A more interesting version, would've featured, say, Dennis Hopper or Christopher Walken as The Grinch. ( Someone who would turn good...but still seem evil. ). The three words that best describe this film are,and I quote,"Stink! Stank! Stunk!"
Rating: Summary: Jim Better Stick with Ace Ventura. . . Review: I watching this in writing class for a holiday treat. Everyone was like, "Let's watch the Grinch." I of couse had other ideas, like Christmas Vacation or the Nightmare Before Christmas. And of couse no one agreed with me aside from my friends. I really liked the older animated one. I remember that. I used to watch that every Christmas along with the other two menchined. My friend warned me it was almost nothing like the original. My other friend said that it "was garbage". I watched it, seeing some crude humor that Dr. Suess himself would never put in his books. The Grinch landing head-first in some womans. . . uhh. . . chest? In a childrens' movie?? The new plot was terrible. It wasn't special and was stupid. Putting an orgin to why the Grinch hated Christmas? It said that in the older film! His heart was two sizes too small and he hated the noise and food! It had nothing to do with a girl he was trying to get and ended up embarrassing himself! Jim Carry just plain distroyed the Grinch's personality. The older Grinch is cold, menicing, and cunning. This Grinch is stupid, over hyper, and ferthermore too ideotic. Jim Carry was awsome in Ace Ventura, but in the Grinch I'm beginning to think he's losing his touch. I agree with the reviewer from LA. If Tim Burton had his hands on this movie it might have had a chance. Too bad. If Tim Burton did refuse, I don't blame him. I actually congradulate him. I did like Max. He (actually it's a girl dog playing that part. ;) Watch Animal Planet) was a great actress. Whoever was Cindy Lou Who should get into a different movie. She was good, but the way the director wanted it kinda blew it. Her song is not sad or anything, just annoying. I hate it that when nobody sings in the movie, then all of a sudden they're like, "Hey, let's sing an annoying, boring song!" They do, and go back to not singing. If your gonna sing, sing. Also the older Grinch theme (You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch. . .) was renewed into something that was annoying also. The older one was better. And what's with all of the drama? It's Christmas! Drama's for Valentine's day! Christmas is ment to have something funny or touching. This is not either of those. And was it nessarsary for a renew of this movie? It was fine the way it was. The animation I loved, since it was from the guy(s) that did some of the Tom and Jerry animation. I can't belive my class likes this thingamajig over Chevey Chase. . .
Rating: Summary: A movie that shouldn't exist Review: Normally I enjoy Ron Howard films, but in this case he should have left well enough alone. "The Grinch" was just fine being only a half hour cartoon, thank you. Since I can't say anything nice about Jim Carrey, I won't say anything at all.
Rating: Summary: Who Cares? Review: Incredible costumes and make-up, and a nice performance by the young actress who played Cindy Lou Who, do not a movie classic make or supercede. There were a handful of funny or pleasant moments, but no emotional whallop like the animated Karloff version. Imagine Ben Affleck performing A Christmas Carol, and you'll have a sense of how this movie fails. Within an hour we were wondering when this thing was ever going to end. The economy of the original was not a weakness; Howard could have deleted a full 30 minutes of this movie without losing a thing - and may have gained a lot in the bargain.
Rating: Summary: I didn't want to... Review: see this movie. I admit it. I am a HUGE Grinch fan. The cartoon is my favorite Christmas cartoon ever. So, when I heard they were remaking it, I was appalled. I swore I would never ever ever watch it. Then, when it was out on cable, I saw most of it. I missed the very beginning but only that. I was caught. I got drawn in against my will and really wound up liking this movie. It's true to the original while filling in the rest of the time with a working variation of the theme. The casting is excellent, as as noted by a lot of other people, Carrey does a fantastic job. The scenery and costumes are amazing. The town seems as though it could really exist. So, yeah... I didn't want to see and I certainly didn't want to like. But once I *did* see it, I couldn't help but like it. I think you'd have to be a grinch to not even give it a chance. It's special and good in it's own way. Not that it'd ever replace the original cartoon. But this is a lovely and fun companion to it.
Rating: Summary: Jime Carrey and Ron Howard - A Christmas Must! Review: THE GRINCH WHO STLE CHRISTMAS - Special Edition (Re-Release) is a marketing tool to get you to buy it again. Why? There is a good reason this time - forgetting the CD-ROM extras, it has a great commentary feature that includes looks and views of behind the scenes, art work and rehearsals and filming. You can watch it with the extras or without. Who's the commentary by Ron Howard (Apollo 13, Backdraft and Splash) The film stars the insatiable talents and comic timing of Jim Carry and it is definitely his movie. Now what also shines are the supporting cast. Taylor Momsen (We Were Soldiers, Spy Kids II)) as Cindy Lou Who, Molly Shannon (The Music Man, Superstar) as Mrs. Betty Lou Who and as Mr. Lou Lou Who (The Laramie Project, A Midsummer Nights Dream) complete the ideal "Who" family. Not to mention some standout performances by Jeffrey Tambor (The Larry Sanders Show, Muppets From Space) as the town Mayor and Christine Baranski (The Bird Cage, Chicago, Bowfinger) as his almost love interest. Even the female dog playing Max has incredible timing and great looks for Jim to react too. I have reviewed this DVD before on it's original release - but this one has extra features that make it worth having a second copy. (I actually have three - original release full-screen and wide-screen version and now this one.) The DVD Rom features are great! The recipies and things you can do with your pictures and cards is a lot of fun for the whole family. The sets, costumes, designs of the make-up (Designed by Rick Baker and even the score by James Horner make this an exceptional family and holiday film. There is humor for adults and kids alike and the sight gags are incredible. It takes a few liberties here an there from the original novels by J. Geils, but is has a great message and happy ending for the kids - it even borrows directly from the cartoon-like images scene in the classic Boris Karloff original cartoon. (12-10-02)
Rating: Summary: GO AWAY GRINCH! Review: This movie is so bad, it's good, to just watch at how terrible Jim Carrey over-acts in this stinkbomb makes me laugh hard, not only the most unneccessary additions, including the Cheerleader title, which believe me I don't blame Ron Howard, who had to try and make a movie with a suitable running time, but that bit was unneccessary, I truly think that this film had hope but too much unneccessary material was introduced into the movie and it took away from the main story, granted I will tell you the costume design and art direction are simply astounding, but that's where it ends, I strongly believe that Tim Burton should have done this movie and probably would have made it absolutely stunning, if you want a real christmas movie, go rent the original grinch, or Christmas Vacation, it may be innappropriate, but it's a hoot.
Rating: Summary: Great movie with a great DVD but.... Review: why did they release this DVD when they already had the collecters edition out? good thing I just bought the VHS last year. So now I have the deluxe edition DVD.
