Rating: Summary: One of the best films ever! Review: I first saw this movie when my school did their own twisted take on it. The result was much too horrible to go into, but the movie was worth the whole awful experience. The whole cast is just great, especially (my personal favorite) the great Rita Moreno as Anita. She did a slam-bang job, especially in the "A Boy Like That" scene and the scen where Anita is teased by the Jets. Terrific songs, most notably "Cool," "The Jet Song," "America," "I Feel Pretty," and "Tonight." The dances are fiery and fierce; my favorite part was the superlative mambo (the best dance number I've ever seen), namely the cool part when the whole orchestra does that "Dah-dah dah da-da-dah-da..." part and the Sharks step across the floor and sweep the Jets out of the way. (You'll only understand that part if you've seen it.) The "Gee, Officer Krupke" is unabashed fun, and the full-cast version of "Tonight" is one of the most brilliant pieces of music I've ever heard. Everything is so good, I can't find a bad thing to say about it. As much as it sounds like a commercial, if you like musicals, you'll love "West Side Story." Oh, why not go for the whole advertisement? 'Rent it today on home video.'
Rating: Summary: Danced into my Heart Review: West Side Story, with all its song and dance, whirled me right into the story! No matter how many times I see it, I find myself caught up in the action and the powerful soundtrack. This, I believe, is Leonard Bernstein's masterpiece. He had me on the edge of my seat during the rumble, and sobbing during the final music, as they carried Tony's body off the stage. Natalie Wood gives a heart-breaking performance as a young girl who grows up and grows old in two days. Richard Beymer is a sweet, over-enthusiastic Tony, whose strive for peace leaves three dead. The Cinemascope captures the full effect of the dances and songs.
Rating: Summary: Comical Review: I know this a musical, I found some of the scenes funny. Especially when a knife fight is happening, everybody breaks down into song and dance. As the victim is lying on the ground bleeding to death with very small amount of blood there is singing. But overall the movie is pretty good.
Rating: Summary: NOT AS GOOD AS I EXPECTED Review: It's really not all that bad, but I wouldn't rate it among one of the best musicals. The reason anyone should see this is because Marni Nixon dubs Natalie Wood, and also because of Rita Moreno, who gives a charming performance as usual...
Rating: Summary: A masterpeice, a great movie then, a great movie now Review: This movie is absolutely fantastic! Having recieved 10 academy awards, you should know that it's gold. The music is wonderfull, the lyrics nothing short of perfection. One of the few movies that has a variety of material; comedy, action, sad parts, it's a great movie I loved it and highly recommend you buying it. It is one of those movies that will be cherished for all time.
Rating: Summary: This was the best movie i've ever seen@ Review: I thought this was a very good movie. It was funny at some parts, suspenseful at some, and just plain made me cry at the end. The plot was very intersting and intreguing, and the characters were well played. I would reccomend this movie to anyone looking for one to see.
Rating: Summary: This movie is really great! Review: I highly suggest this movie to anyone. It is adorable. Sure, it is boring at times, but bare with it, you won't regret it. It is my favourite cinematic production of Shakepeare's Romeo and Juliet. Rent this movie at least, if not...but it, you won't regret it, I promise. The dancing and the music is so great. P.S. For those of you get restless with this movie, fast forward the slow songs or the ones you are not interested in.
Rating: Summary: Cinematic Perfection! Review: Sure it isn't politically correct, with Caucasions Natalie Wood and George Chakaris in leading roles and Latina Rita Moreno in a vivid, yet supporting role. Yeah, and the stereotypes abound. But, so what? The music is superb, the cinematography outstanding, the dances magnificent, and the direction flawless. As a lad of eight when I first saw it, I was mesmerized by everything on the screen. Even after all these years, the movie still holds a special place in my heart as one of the best, if not the best, movie musicals. New York has never looked or sounded better! This is a "rumble" of the highest magnitude!
Rating: Summary: THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME! Review: Natalie Wood is GREAT! The music is really cool too! The hole movie is wonderful! If you like musicals, you'll love this movie! The choreography is great, the music is great, the acting is great! I would give this movie 10 stars if I could!
Rating: Summary: A timeless tragedy! Review: This is an excellent musical displaying all the broadway characteristics from its original stage production of 1959. Based on a modern story of Romeo and Juliet the movie traces the expolits of two New York Gangs, the Jets (and all white all american gang) and the Sharks (a Peurto Rican gang - now living in New York). Problems arise after Tony (best friend of Riff - leader of the Jets)fall in love with Maria (sister of Bernardo - leader of the Sharks) The music, dancing, finger snapping, humourous and tragic moments give West Side Story a place in history. The scenario can be fitted into any rivalry Black - white; Protestant - Catholic etc. and everyone can learn something from this. The ending is weepy yet in all its splendour speaks so clearly to all of us about the problems that can occur when we do not live together in harmony. Classic songs nclude "Maria"; "Somewhere"; "Tonight" many of which have been recorded many times by famous artists. A memorable movie that you will want to watch again and again.
