Rating: Summary: Best Austen adaptation I've seen Review: To say the film is beautifully shot is woefully understating the obvious. But, unlike many costume flicks, the visuals don't seem fussy or educational. You realize you are in beautiful places without being forced that down your throat.Emma Thompson's performance as the older Dashwood is the crux of the film. In the dark moments of the film, she is hopeful. In the light moments, she seems wary. As someone who has sense should be played. But, the severity of their situation and her romantic situation is also poignantly played by Emma Thompson. Kate Winslet is good too, and their chemistry as sisters is perfect. You really believe they were. What you remember about the movie is not the romance, but the shared struggles of these two sisters (the littlest one merely is comic foil.) As close to a Austen hankie as you're gonna get!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic adaptation of an Austen classic! Review: This was a beautiful movie to watch. Emma Thompson put together a wonderful screenplay and it was almost as if she had a direct connection with Jane Austen herself! No wonder she won the Academy Award! Ang Lee's direction of the film was magnificent and the entire cast brought life to a tale of family, love, and society. It is also proof that Kate Winslet was already a fine actress before the rest of the world "discovered" her in James Cameron's "Titanic". The only other writer I know of who could do as good a job as Ms. Thompson when it comes to breathing new life to the words of a legendary literary artist is her former husband, Kenneth Branagh. If you enjoy romance and humor with a classic twist, you should definitely rent or purchase a copy of William Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" starring Branagh and Thompson. Another great film! With a number of Oscar nominations in its name, "Sense and Sensibility" is an absolute must-see!
Rating: Summary: Sense and Sensibility: Beautifully told story. Review: This movie had me completely engrossed within the first 10 minutes. Wonderfully told and acted by Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet. Alan Rickman plays a perfect part as Colonel Brandon in love with Marianne Dashwood.(Winslet) I recommend this to everyone. It is defintely part of my video collection.
Rating: Summary: It was absolutely phenomenal! Review: I loved Sense and Sensibilty. It is a must for any video collection. And if you love watching Kate Winslet, Emma Thompson, or Hugh Grant, then this movie is definitely for you. Whether its in the happy times or when Marianne gets sick, you love the Dashwood sisters and laugh and cry with them.
Rating: Summary: My husband & I loved every second of this movie! Review: Enough has been said in previous reviews about the sets, costumes, casting etc - we were enthralled from the minute it began to the minute it ended. It was flawless!! We are now devout Emma Thompson fans!!
Rating: Summary: Even better than the book! Review: This movie was terrific! I actually liked the movie better than the book--the changes that Emma Thompson made only improved the storyline. My favorite part is the last shot of Willoughby, alone on his horse. I love to see a movie where everyone gets what they deserve, including the bad guys!
Rating: Summary: A Classic Masterpiece Review: I watched the movie for 2 months, once or twice everyday. I guess that speaks volumes for how much I liked it. What happened after 2 months? No, I did not get bored. the tape went bad!
Rating: Summary: Good story idea but rather boring Review: I liked the story idea but the movie was BORING! It was too slow
Rating: Summary: Good story idea but rather boring Review: I liked the story line but the movie was BORING! It was too slow
Rating: Summary: All right...slickly produced, but not a lot of substance Review: I was a little disappointed with director Ang Lee's "American debut." All told, S&S was very well-constructed but a bit fluffy. The costuming was amazing, though, and the cinematography was, as with all of Lee's films, impeccable. Thompson's best work, IMHO, is "The Remains of the Day." For those curious about this phenomenal Taiwanese film maker, I suggest "Tui Shou" ("Pushing Hands" in English) or "The Wedding Banquet."
