Summary: What a great movie!!!
Review: Wow! I am a true lover of Jane Austens work and I think this is a brilliant adaptation! I loved the entire movie. Next to the A&E version of Pride & Prejudice, I think it is my favorite movie adapted from a novel. It follows the book very well, and the artistic license which the director uses only enhances the story. And the ending...brilliant. To see Willouby on the hill at Marianne's wedding---every woman should feel vindicated at that moment. It is DEFINITELY worth buying.

Summary: Touching and Picturesque
Review: It's tough to adapt a movie from a novel, but this movie is about as close as you can get. Emma Thompson's superb screenplay adaptation AND acting abilities remain true to Jane Austen's novel and characterization while giving it the perfect cinematic touch. Kate Winslet turns in an excellent performance as well, as does the stammering blinking Hugh Grant. The ending is perfect, making you laugh, cry, or do both at the same time. Witty without being pompous, touching without resorting to cliches, and picturesque without being forced. How can anyone resist this British delight?

Summary: Grab a tissue!
Review: This deserves 10 stars! Unlike the painting-like 'Emma', this film is the closest we may come to seeing the past come to life. There are small details - imperfections - that make it all too credible: dirty skirts, sickness, weather (Willoughby and the rain - oh my!), horse poo from the carriages. Lee wasn't afraid to let his poor girls suffer the truest of real-life impediments.You can almost feel the cold in their tiny cottage, which was actually an enormous estate that they concealed in filming. The drab weather is depressing and angst ridden, while the sun shines when happiness abounds. Emotions pour out of the motion picture. Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson (her screenplay is great and includes many pics, diaries, and commentary from/about the flic) are credible sisters who suffer the maladies of nearly lost loves. Fortunately, Austen never made her characters suffer for long. Like 'Emma', a quaint wedding proves to be the best and most romantic conclusion. The soundtrack is simply exquisite. I only wish they'd included Kate's versions of the songs. Check out 'The Friendly Austen'. It is an absolute MUST HAVE - commentary on the films and books, plus the author's biography. This one is so much fun to read. Fascinating tid-bits. There's also 'The Friendly Shakespeare' and 'The Friendly Dickens'.

Summary: A Beautiful, Touching Movie
Review: I first saw this movie back in 1996 on a trans-atlantic flight from Italy to Toronto. While mostly everyone else on the plane was sleeping, I was bored and decided to take a chance on watching what I thought would be yet another boring, stiff, English movie. I couldn't have been more wrong. Three minuites into the movie I was already laughing and smiling in my seat. For the next two hours I was swept into the glorius tale of two very different, but very lovely sisters. Unlike other British movies I have seen, I found the dialogue easy to comprehend and the subtle humor very funny. Every aspect of the movie was magnificent. The writing, acting, directing were all superb and you couldn't have asked for a better cast. Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet were amazing and perfect in the roles of the two Dashwood sisters. They were surrounded by a magnificent supporting cast, every actor performing his/her role to perfection. By the end of the movie I was bawling and smiling at the same time. The woman beside me thought I was nuts and I had to excuse myself to cry my eyes out in the bathroom. Back home the following week I purchased the movie and have since watched it too many times to count. The movie is firmly situated in my top three favourite movies of all time. It is truely a stunning and amazing movie.

Summary: A hopeless romantic's English delight!
Review: This is (in my opinion) the finest of all movies based on Jane Austen novels. An extremely fine cast and beautiful English settings, along with Emma Thompson's beautifully written screenplay make for a fine evening for all hopeless romantics! This is a story of two sisters who lose their dowry due to their father's death and all the money goes to his first son. Elinor's sensibility is contrasted against Marianne's (superbly played by Kate Winslet) lack of sense in pursuit of romance as each girl endures various obstacles pertaining to the objects of their affections. Each sister endures and grows to find the true love and happiness that they've always hoped for. The soundtrack is also an asset to this movie.

Summary: Just a word about the DVD
Review: All that can be said has been said in the reviews of this wonderful, beautiful adaptation of Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility". Let me just add that the DVD is a "must have" for fans of the movie. The audio commentaries by the director, the producers and the screenwriter add so much insight into the making of the movie, it's just all too good to miss. Everything about this movie is perfect and in my humble opinion it should have won the Oscar.

Review: It's extremely difficult to write something different than what already appears here about this extraordinary film, other than to reinforce the nuances which make it so fine. Yes, it's the acting; it's the painstaking detail in the costumes, jewelry, scenery; it's the tight script and poetic pace; it's all of these things, and yet what makes this movie so wonderful is not minutia but evocation. Whether you identify with the idealism of Winslet's Marianne or the endurance found in Thompson's Elinor, we all know -- intimately -- the range of emotions which this terrific group of artists seem to so effortlessly touch with words and deeds. It's a stunning piece, I have yet to meet someone unaffected by it. Share this movie with someone you love.

Summary: An incredible treat for lovers of romance
Review: I have to admit to being a HUGE Emma Thompson fan, and also someone who enjoyed reading classics in high school. That being said, I really feel this adaptation is one any lover of romance can enjoy. The characters are all believable - the older daughter who has to be reasonable and help keep her family going, and the younger, romantic sister who wants to fall in love with a handsome man who quotes poetry to her and takes her on picnics. The adaptation is not faithful - many items were changed to make the story more accessible - but even purists will be charmed at how well the story plays. Alan Rickman is great as the older suitor who loves Marianne and wishes her the best, even if that means she goes with another man he doubts the worth of. If you have a DVD player it's even better - the DVD version has several separate audio tracks that let you hear the actor and directors thoughts while watching the movie. You'll be amazed at the kinds of insights you learn! Definitely a DVD on my shelf that is watched often.

Summary: Wonderful Movie; Great Story
Review: If you enjoy period pieces, this movie is excellent on all levels. Great filming, great costumes, excellent story, and the incomparable Emma Thompson (and Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant and more, to boot)! You can't go wrong with this one (unless you want dark, dreary, violent, bloody, mawkish sentimentality and the like.) This is a beautiful and compelling movie...even guys should like it, assuming you can get them to sit still long enough to get into it.
