Summary: Blech.
Review: Once upon a time, when you bought "the video of a show" you received, "the video of a show."

Not any more.

I do not know what this is. The closest relative it would have is an MTV music video -- and who wants to see one that is an hour and a half long.

Save your money to go to a revival of Joseph.
This is one to miss.

Summary: NOT for children
Review: We bought this DVD for our kids -- but I'm glad we watched it before showing it to them. The movie is a "irreverent" version of the bible story, and the sexual innuendo, not to mention the revealing and suggestive costumes, makes it unsuitable for kids.

Summary: An Absolute Delight - A Must-See For All Who Love Musicals!
Review: I have been a great fan of "Joseph" since the original album came out some thirty years ago. I was lucky enough to see Donny Osmond in it a few years ago and renewed my love affair with this show. This is an astoundingly good production that retains all that is wonderful about "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." Some filmed versions of musicals are disappointing, I think because the film industry has forgotten how to do it right. Let's face it, with the exception of "Evita" and "Cats," there hasn't been a major musical filmed in two decades. "Evita" was right on the money. "Cats" was a mild disappointment. And "Joseph" surpasses them both. Everything about the show is wonderful. The cast (Donny Osmond and Maria Friedman especially), the sets (based on the stage production, but opened out and expanded), the music (always a treat), the choreography (delightfully camp), and the direction (this is so much more than just some MTV video). If you've seen the show done live, you'll love the DVD. If you've never seen the show done live, you'll love the DVD. It's a win/win situation.

Summary: What a musical!
Review: Anyone who has seen, listened to or even heard of this musical should buy this video. The performances by all of the cast are excellent especially Donny Osmond and Maria Friedman. It is a funny, intelligent and heartwarming musical. It will make you laugh and cry - but most of all, it will leave you singing the fabulous songs over and over again. A must have for any musical fan!

Summary: Good, but just misses the mark for me
Review: Unlike most of the reviewers below, I had never seen Joseph prior to viewing this DVD. While I'm sure I'll watch it enough times to justify the purchase, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. Andrew Lloyd Webber fans buying this blind, as I did, may want to rent it first. The music and lyrics aren't in the same league as subsequent works by Webber and Tim Rice.

That said, I did enjoy this production. Donny Osmond turns in a great performance in the lead role. The costumes and sets, while garish, are in keeping with the tone set by Rice's tongue-in-cheek lyrics. If you like DTS, you'll be happy to know this DVD contains both DTS 5.1 and DD 5.1 soundtracks. There is also a nice making-of documentary among the several extras.

Summary: Not for kids
Review: Many of the costumes in this production are bodysuits, designed to make it look like the actors are nude except for bits of strategic glitter. If it were rated, this video would garner a PG. This will not be objectionable to most people, but this video is being marketed as a "show for the whole family", and if you are a conservative parent, you may not want your kids watching it. For a good laugh, pick up the video box in your local video store and look at the picture of Joan Collins on the back. Her costume (which normally makes her look like she's topless) has been carefully colored in on the top!

That warning aside, it's a fairly good video. I did not care for the way the show was framed as a production at a school, and the children's chorus was actually annoying in spots. However, most of the excitement and fun of the stage production comes through, and Donny Osmond is fabulous as Joseph.

Summary: Wonderful
Review: This is a wonderful video to own. The stage production can not be duplicated, but this is the next best thing. It is much better than some of the brainless movies so readily available. Get this video and revel in the great music and excellent performance by Donny Osmond, he is wonderful. I'm sending a copy to both my daughters!

Summary: A Dream Come True for Joseph fans anywere
Review: Back In December 99 I had the pleasure of performing this wonderful play, and when I heard the video was due to come out I was on pins and needles the entire wait. And now that I've seen it I realize the wait was well worth it. Joseph does an excellent transition to film. far FAR superior to CATS the actors in this version are truly sublime. Donny Osmond is, and will always be the best performer to ever portray Joseph. Friedman had a wonderful, charming touch as the narrator, and Attenborough gave me a surprise in his portrayal of Jacob. Ian McNiece, though had an interesting edge as Potiphar, his mighty roar just wasn't intimidating enough. I think that everyone should see this movie. It's a fine example of what movie musicals can be. Let's just pray that "Phantom of the Opera" will work. (crossing fingers.)

Summary: Amazing New 1999 Production
Review: I watched it today when I received my DVD from Amazon. I was amazed at the production. At first it threw me appearing in a school gym. Then after viewing the bonus information I realized it was the best way to show this production. Too much of the bonus material is self promotion for Andrew L. Webbers other productions, but it is a very well done prodcution and Joan Collins is great.

Summary: Wonderful!
Review: The best production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat that I have seen!
