Summary: dvd cuts out ending
Review: the anchor bay dvd of MAD MONSTER PARTY is indeed great, but it's a shame the ending of the film is cut. after the organ music ends, we hear a singer say "yeah" in a really cool jazzy voice. for some reason, anchor bay has cut the "yeah" part. it's only about 15 seconds or so, but you'd be surprised how great that one word sounds. instead, as the organ music ends, the anchor bay version just stops. sadly, anchor bay pulled the same mistake on their vhs version. (vhs buyers beware -- the back of the vhs box says the tape contains lots of extras, but there aren't any!) to hear the cool "yeah" line, watch the film on AMC, or check out the two previous vhs issues (both have the final line). it's a shame anchor bay made this slight goof (now we still have to keep our vhs tape of it if we want to hear the final word). otherwise, the dvd is great. well worth buying.

Summary: At Last! The Best of the Rankin/Bass "Animagics"
Review: Aesthetically, the best Rankin/Bass "Animagic" flick of them all. Well worth watching, if for no other reason, just too see the fantastic in-the-round MAD MAGAZINE-like caricatures of the entire array of classic monsters. Those of us who grew up in the 1960s and 1970s fondly remember seeing this classic on TV a few times around Halloween. And now, thanks to the cool folks at Anchor Bay, we can nostalgically relive that childhood experience over and over again--in more vivid color and with crisper images than ever before, as the DVD was digitally remastered (for the first time ever for home video) from a rare original 35mm print!Unlike their other Christmas and Easter productions, this one-and-only Halloween flick from the Rankin/Bass team is not overly saccharin or maudlin. Not only did MAD MAGAZINE's Harvey Kurtzman and Jack Davis have their hands in the writing and the visual artistry, but the master of macabre himself, Boris Karloff, voiced the animated puppet version of himself as Baron Frankenstein! So you know that, like all Rankin/Bass works, it's a wholesome family movie, but you can also be sure that there is lots of funeral-parlor and gallows humor--and even a few scary moments. If you enjoy claymation-type animation, you'll enjoy watching this film. If you laugh at the comedy of flicks like ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, you'll guffaw endlessly during this movie. And if you love to watch and collect the old classic monster movies, the DVD version of MAD MONSTER PARTY? is a must-own.

Summary: It hasn't looked so good since the day it hit the theatres!
Review: I went to see "Mad Monster Party" as a child. I loved it then (moreso than other Rankin/Bass films like "Rudolph"). I've grown to love it even more in the ensuing years. The jazzy, catchy songs, the Mad Magazine-style "chicken fat" humor (best line: "Did you remember to close the windows in your room?"), the Jack Davis-inspired monsters, the incredible array of voices by Alan Swift...it has proven durable and delightful. But what's especially notable about this DVD release is the PICTURE. Remastered from a 32mm print (all previous video releases of MMP have been struck from inferior 16mm prints, and shoddy ones at that), the video is as clear and crisp as the day it was released. I'm astonished at subtleties and the amount of detail that I've been missing from the TV broadcasts all these years. It's truly like rediscovering the film, and it definitely brings a new level of enjoyment to the experience.

Review: wow!!! is the only way to explain this dvd gem.If you have seen this version on tv or video you have not heard or seen anything yet!The picture quality is so clean and clear i can not believe it!This movie brings back so many memories of seeing it on saturday afternoon tv close to halloween time.For anyone who has loved halloween or classic horror movies this movie is for you.The classic rankin and bass touch truley comes alive.for anyone who truley loves a good time this movie is for you.

Summary: Groovy retro puppet monster classic is better than ever!
Review: Not too long ago, this lost Rankin/Bass puppet-animated feature film was virtually forgotten about under the pile of other holiday classics - including "RUDOLPH", "FROSTY" and "SANTA CLAUS" - from the same creators. Now, thanks to verification from Rick Goldschmidt (and his wonderful books about R/B) that this film really did exist and wasn't just a childhood dream, "MAD MONSTER PARTY" has acheived cult status with its own website, a CD soundtrack, several airings during the past couple Halloween seasons and is finally released in this gorgeous collector's DVD. When Dr. Baron Von Frankenstein decides to retire from his long career as the head of the "Worldwide Organization of Monsters", he invites all of his creations - Frankenstein, The Mummy, Count Dracula, The Invisible Man, The Werewolf and many others - for one final bash to announce that his successor will be his long-lost nephew, a nerdy boy named Felix Flankin. This does not sit well with the monsters, who each covet the position, and so poor Felix is in big trouble!! Boris Karlof adds his eerie sound as the Baron, Phyllis Diller is an ingenious choice as the Monster's Mate, and Gale Garnett takes the cake as the most memorable character, Francesca, a curvy, buxom, husky-voiced sexy red-head with a mind just as sinister as the ghastliest of the monsters. The DVD is nothing short of stunning, with a beautiful, crystal-clear digitally restored picture and lots of extras including trailers, stills, original artwork, cool animated menus and a 24-page booklet included inside the DVD. A special thanks to ANCHOR BAY who have also promised to release 2 other Rankin/Bass features "WACKY WORLD OF MOTHER GOOSE" & "THE DAYDREAMER" later this year.

Summary: This is one movie I've waited YEARS to own!
Review: I'm so exicted I cannot express how happy I am to FINALLY be able to own this movie. I've loved it ever since I was a child. The animagic is great, the characters are wonderful, and I had a crush on Francesca since I first saw here, and I still do!
Extras, they're nice with a DVD but with a movie like this, extras are not needed. What we need is a great, clean, crisp, 35mm copy of this movie and that's what Anchor Bay has delivered. This is not a bad 16mm or 8mm copy of a copy. This is the REAL deal. Buy it before Boris drops his vial!

Summary: By Far the BEST RANKIN/BASS DVD to date!
Review: I am not just saying this, because I worked on it...it REALLY is the BEST R/B DVD to date. The print is SUPERIOR to any previous MMP video release AND better than most of the other Holiday releases. It is PERFECT. ANCHOR BAY made this DVD not only for families BUT for the collector, adding the trailer (The Trailers for THE DAYDREAMER and WACKY WORLD OF MOTHER GOOSE are an EASTER EGG...click BORIS' Beaker), Extensive still and pre-production archives and GREAT menus! Mark Ward and Julie Campion also allowed me to Produce a 24 page, full color booklet (included in this DVD) which is unheard of in the market. What other DVD have you bought lately... included a booklet? This is a GREAT film for all fans of MONSTERS and RANKIN/BASS and ANIMATION for that matter! I would have to say, the only other RANKIN/BASS Project I like as much as this would be RUDOLPH. If you own any of the previous video releases, toss them out and buy this DVD. Review: ahhh the memories. this was a childrens classic somewhat like Rudolph , and Little drummer Boy, with animated puppets. very very funny. featuring puppets of old stars like Phyllis Diller, and Boris Karloff. Old and young will get a kick outta this. And wait till u see Francesca OOOOH LA LA baby (hahaha)

Summary: A so/so film doomed to a marketing bonanza like Rudolph...
Review: This film is not the classic one would expect from the creators of "Rudolph" and "Frosty". It's the story about Baron Boris von Frankenstein holding a convention of the movie monsters at his castle on the Island of Evil. There are quite a few silly and entertaining moments in this film, but it does contain a great deal of filler scenes that neither further the plot or enhance character development. The ending also leaves something to be desired as well. Sadly this DVD contains very little extras and one would expect an interview with Arthur Rankin at the very least to lead into the film, just as it was done with "Rudolph" and "Frosty" when they came to DVD a few years ago. This may come further down the line because a common trend with studios today is to put out many titles with very few extras and then re release then as collector's editions after people have bought the standard edition. This film has become some what of a cult classic, so I expect that with in a few years we will see an explosion in merchandise, a making of book, and a collector's DVD as things begin to wind down with Rudolph and other Rankin/Bass properties are explored for exploitation.
