Summary: One of the best cartoons/movies ever.
Review: I have been watching this movie since I was little and have never stopped enjoying it. With the cartoons colorful imagery, story and catchy songs (I also recommend the soundtrack), one cannot help but enjoy it. The story has a good lesson and teaches a valuable ideal, to young and old. This film is a must have for everyone, you will not be disappointed.

Summary: finally on DVD!
Review: I've been waiting for this to appear on DVD for years, and I'm happy to finally have it in a well-transferred version with decent sound. It's a bright, fun movie kids will enjoy, with great songs from Nilsson. Definitely recommended.

As a "Point" fan, I'd been hoping for ANY extras...a making-of featurette, concept art, or alternate audio tracks with the different narrators (Ringo, Alan Thicke, Dustin Hoffman) but there's nothing at all, and that's disappointing....thus, 4 stars.

And to the reviewer looking for other films from his childhood: you're thinking of the classic, "The Mouse and His Child" (also done by Murakami-Wolf). Hopefully we'll see that on DVD soon.

Summary: The Point, and the Other Movie Josh Remembers
Review: First off, I have very fond memories of The Point from my childhood. Harry Nilsson is the perfect composer for a not-too-sweet children's story, and Dustin Hoffman's original narration was terrific.

Second off, the movie that Josh Thomas remembers in his review must have been an adaptation of The Mouse and His Child. I never saw the animated version, but it does exist (check the VHS listings on Amazon). I did read the book as an adult and it is magnificent. The first chapter is stunning and perfect. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Summary: Great character film with good issues for discussion
Review: The movie is very fun for kids and adults - the music is catchy - Oblio is endearing and we do care for his honesty and smarts - the artwork is fantastic and often wierdly abstract. The characters Oblio meets all point his thoughts towards the truth he is struggling towards. Ok, so Ringo may not have been the best narrator - he sounds like he is just reading along and often emphasizes the wrong parts of speech. More annoying is that this digital transfer seems to have been done from a flawed master - there are lots of "dusty" blemishes that could easily have been brushed out before committing it to DVD. There are no extras at all either - kinda short-changing the millions of people who love this movie.

Having said that, it really is a classic and it will cheer up everyone who watches it. It is a funny, thought-provoking, tale of a boy's mission and it makes its many "points" in a gentle and creative way. Kids will relate to Oblio and he will help them think about the law, crime and punishment, bullying, discrimination, ethics, character, growing up, caring for nature, purpose in life, danger and fear, and making a stand. They can wonder and wander along with Oblio through this magical treat which is a feast for the the mind, the heart, the ears, and the eyes.

Summary: The Point
Review: It's the Point as I remembered it, the DVD though, was made from a dirty master copy. I think they could have taken the time to clean the film.

Summary: Great movie - missed opportunity
Review: There are many fine points to be made for this movie, not the least of which is the songs. "Me and My Arrow" has been commercialized, but better are "Poli High", "Think About Your Troubles", and "P.O.V. Waltz". The story is engaging and reminds us all of how we can be better.

"The Point" has been shown with at least three different narrators: Dustin Hoffman, Alan Thicke, and Ringo Starr. The DVD format would easily handle each of these as a different audio choice. Too bad they weren't all put onto one DVD.

Summary: The Point
Review: Yes Alan Thicke was the first narrator of this animation film. It is a masterpiece By a master musician Harry Nilsson. I love Ringo but I wish it was the original narrator Alan Thicke. I have pre-order this DVD. It is shehuled to be released March 23 2004.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Four Stars only because it's Ringo, not Dustin Hoffman
Review: The original broadcast and at least one subsequent broadcast that I've seen had Dustin Hoffman playing the Dad. Being an actor, he DID do a better job telling the story than does Ringo. Ringo gets a little awkward in places.

That having been said, this is one wonderful story, we have it on VHS now and will have it on DVD. We play it for the kids on long trips in our Minivan. The characters are funny and well performed, the message is particularly important, and the animation is very well done and not the usual kiddie schlock.

Summary: why so long to release it?
Review: I have been waiting for the best part of 30 years to see/buy/rent/borrow this movie. I saw it on TV about Christmas 74 in the UK. Its only that I have a copy of Nilssons soundtrack that keeps me thinking maybe one day, yes maybe one day I will see this beautiful little film again...
Why oh why has it been so long to release it? I suspect greedy producers, ancient copyright problems and LAWYERS have stopped the world from seeing this absolute gem of a film. A whole generation of children have been deprived of seeing this masterpiece which without doubt is a crime.
A whole generation of parents have been deprived of showing their children this film which is criminal as well.
I was in the States last year and my friends kids heard the soundtrack and now they are waiting to see the film... Just how much longer do we have to wait?

Summary: A Delightfull Progressive Adventure
Review: About 30 years ago I saw this fascinating adventure, about a little boy named Oblio and his pointed dog sent to the terrible pointless forest in a search for a point where all kind of strange creatures meet, kind of Yellow Submarine or a bit Fantastic Planet, the most sweet music, the storyteller... all the atmospheres created in this movie are magical. I was wating to show my kids this wonderfull tale but it took so long that they are already big. Well I would be delighted to have such a DVD to show them anyway.
