Summary: a magnificent sports movie
Review: I just got the DVD version of this film and felt compelled enough to write my first review. The sound is Dolby 5.1 (no 2 channel for English) and the picture quality is good. I noticed some scratches that the transfer should have eliminated, but only a couple and they're very small and quickly gone. The original theatrical trailer is included, but there are no other extra features.This movie is, in my opinion the best sports movie ever made. Of course, this is partly because I believe basketball to be the "greatest game ever made." (a quote from Dennis Hopper's character) Plus, I lived the situations in this movie, to a certain degree, and without the happy ending. This movie captures basketball at it's purest. It is set before the three-point shot, before the fancy shoes, and before the crybaby professionals. Basketball is for young men who can still be taught the physical and mental aspects of the game, and are willing to learn. That's who these boys are. They take jump shots with one knee in the air, and play defense with their feet. What is presented in this movie is the reason many people other than myself love the game. When it all comes together, the new coach, the hungry kids, and the disgruntled townies, everything is right in the world, and you can feel it in your soul. If you are a basketball fan who owns a DVD player, YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF to buy this movie.

Summary: Hoosiers reaffirms that Indiana is THE basketball capital.
Review: When I saw this movie for the first time, it was like all of the other movies my parents watched, never the mainstream ones. Upon watching it again (and again, and again), I discovered a masterpiece that shows off Indiana's pride in the game of basketball and their teams. It is perhaps one of the only movies in which Gene Hackman plays someone you can really like, and Dennis Hopper and Barbara Hershey complete the job of making the movie lovable. Anyone can see why Jerry Goldsmith's score was nominated for an Academy Award, and David Anspaugh's direction is perfect. A must see for anyone who grew up in Indiana, or even who's been there. A real classic and the best basketball film ever made.

Incredible true story of a high school basketball team (Hickory Hoosiers) from a small town in Indiana in the early 50's that go on to win the state championship for the first time history. My Review
Gene Hackman plays the coach, and the story is very well done. I visited the Indiana State High School Basketball website --> www.ihsaa.org, but under the year 1953 it does not list the Hickory Hoosiers, the name of the actual high school the movie is based on is MILAN.

Summary: Hoosiers Is A Winner!
Review: Hoosiers is destined to be a classic. From the opening scenes of the beautiful Indiana countryside to the hollowed halls of Hinkle Fieldhouse at Butler University where the state finals were filmed, this movie is a winner! I was actually in the film and spent 3 days filming in Lebanon, Indiana (the semi-state game in the Jasper gym) and i must say it was a treat watching Mr. Anspaugh, Hackman, Hershey, the ballplayers and entire cast perform. The film has fantastic music, beautiful color and a wonderful cast. If you hav'nt seen this future classic yet, head to the stores to rent or buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Review: I think this has to be one of the best basketball movies ever made. Hackman, Hershey and Hopper all turn in excellent performances. It's so good that you find yourself rooting for coach and the Hoosiers to go all the way and win it all. I wanted this movie so badly that I preordered it.

There is an authenticity in time and place that enables you to feel the damp chill in the Indiana air, smell the pungent wax on a gym floor, or hear the frenzied hiss of pom-pons. Gene Hackman is Coach Norman Dale, a man who expresses subtle pain with a glance at his shoes or a little false smile, yet whose flashing eyes and constricted jaw betray a quiet, controlled rage over a long-ago secret that condemned his past. The strong, silent coach shows compassion when he enlists the help of Dennis Hopper as "Shooter," the alcoholic father of a team member. The coach involves the man with his son, his team, and the community in a noble effort to encourage him to seek treatment for his addiction. "Hoosiers" is a powerful film that leaves a catch in the throat and a glow in the heart.

Review: It is purely coincidental that the backdrop for this movie happens to be high school basketball or sports of any kind: This is a genuinely great movie, leaving the audience feeling good about themselves and willing to search for a second chance at success in life, no matter how great the failure. A one-word description of the movie? REDEMPTION. This theme runs throughout, i.e., a second chance...for the town drunk, for the coach, for the wannabe assistant coach, for the old-maid school teacher, for the team, for Jimmy Chitwood, for the drunk's son, for Strap, for the town, for the principal, for the players who quit, for the equipment manager, for the school bus...with the movie on video, you now have a second chance to watch and enjoy this great movie! It is worth the redemption price! If you already have seen it, after reading this review you may see it through a different perspective; if you have not seen it, I know you will thoroughly enjoy it, over and over again. Hoosiers is not just my favorite sports movie, it is my favorite movie of all time. The movie truly is about redemption, about people failing and being given a second chance. Some handle it better than others, but it cuts a true slice out of life in the 1950s and the 2000s! We should all get that kind of second chance! The best part is, we do. Those who succeeded in Hoosiers accepted their second chance and made something of it. I watch this movie any time that life hands me a setback or any time that I fail or fall. It is a better pick-me-up than any anti-depressant. So, wipe your slate clean and watch Hoosiers again for the first time!

Review: "It isn't the size of the dog in the fight. It's the size of the fight in the dog"... that counts. Coach Norman Dale, Jimmy Chitwood, and the Hickory Basketball team were very small. but that didn't matter. In the movie when the old coach had died. Coach Norman Dale had to take over. Not many people likeed him because he didn't coach like the last. So then the town was going to remove him. When they voted for him to be romoved Jimmy Chitwood came in. Jimmy Chitwood played basketball very well. He wanted Coach Dale to stay so he told the town if they removed him. He wouldn't play but if they let him stay he would. Coach Dale was to stay. For a team of eight people it went very far. Since basketball was very big for the town. They HAD to. They made it to the State Finals and won. This was the first time ever. and they made history. Coach Dale and his team made the whole town happy. so as in the words of Coach Dale. "It isn't the size of the dog in the fight. It's the size of the fight in the dog" that counts.
