Rating: Summary: AMONG TOP 5 GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME Review: During my theatre viewing of "Contact" I was seated in the back row. What I witnessed that was almost more remarkable than the film was what went on in the audience (or what did not go on) - During the entire duration of the movie NOBODY moved - no bathroom breaks, no popcorn runs. "Contact" was completely entralling. A wonderfully orchestrated concept in addressing some of the most difficult philosophical questions ever asked. A few great surprises to keep the audiences on the end of their chairs. How many people got goose bumps when Hadden says from the Russian spacestation: "Want to take a ride?" As I read some of these reviews my only comment for those slightly disappointed in not have the great visual alien revelation at the end is: Look beyond the physical, this movie is about ideas and intangibles, use your mind. I'm sure the Vegan alien would have had to work overtime to "make it easier" for you, too. And for those of you who think this is Sagan's way of saying there are aliens and flying saucers all around us - Wrong - this is actually Sagan's way (or science's way) of saying that if there was life out there, because of the vast distances, a transmitted signal would be the first (or most intelligent) way to try to communicate and not zooming around in flying saucers. Sorry, Roswell, I'd like to believe but as Jodie Foster says "I'd need proof, wouldn't you?" Carl Sagan believed it was possible. That's what "Contact" is about: "What If"...
Rating: Summary: The most offensive movie I've seen in years Review: This movie purports to be about science, but it posits science as something one takes on faith. I believe that would be religion. Science is about method and empiricism. Carl Sagan rolls in his grave, as do Einstein and newton.I'd sooner watch films of penile surgery.
Rating: Summary: The Single Greatest Movie Of The Decade Review: This movie is so beautiful and profound! Jodie Foster plays a scientist who discovers a signal from outer space. She sets out to discover the non-earthly beings who sent it. I think the one word to describe this film is "discovery", but running a close second would be the word "heart".
Rating: Summary: Great movie Review: Deals with all aspects of the humna life. One of Carl Sagan's best brought to life.
Rating: Summary: The first 3 minutes make it all worthwhile... Review: Incredible opening scene will give your life perspective like no other movie...
Rating: Summary: THE MOVIE THAT MADE ME HATE THE OSCARS Review: How could the 1997 Oscar people snub this movie? IT was given better reviews by Titanic by some sources. I mean, this movie ROCKS. I loved the book and I have seen the movie five times. It's the movie that made me decided to become a physicist. Great plot, great acting, and if you have at least a somewhat decent I.Q., you shouldn't be bored. It confronts many religious and political questions. It is tied for my favotie movie(THE OTHER TIE: ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW) It is a birlliant, well thought movie that should have deserved oh-so-much more than what it got. Those who insult are probably all either dumb hicks or stupid religious fanatics who don't like any movie that questions faith.(CUZ THE MAIN CHARACTER IS A AGNOSTIC) I mean, I thought my uncle was kind of uneducated until he saw this movie and suddenly !!BAM!! His smart side came out and we(MY FAMILY AND I) spent about an hour and a half discussing religion v. science.
Rating: Summary: Fell asleep every time I tried to watch it Review: Some movies are so compelling that, even if I start the movie after midnight after a full day of work, I can get through. I fell asleep three times trying to watch it. The buildup to the "Contact" was a let down when we actually experienced it. As for McConaughey, if he was so religious, why did he sleep with Foster in the beginning of the movie. The "Contact" scene had a "What Dreams May Come" quality to it. The only that made the movie worth seeing was Angela Bassett's revealation at the end. It's not a movie to avoid but I think you'll be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: A BRUSH WITH EXCELLENCE Review: If only the Palmer Joss role (I hate that phony name) had been cut, he film-maker would have had at least another twenty minutes to cull some great stuff from the novel that had to be sacrificed for the religous counter-point (Joss). Not entirely devoid of space oriented special effects, this film captures todays zeitgeist with uncanny currency. It has the same feel as The China Syndrome. I highly recommend Contact; and when Palmer Joss rears his ugly mug, just think of it as snack time and head for the kitchen.
Rating: Summary: 5 stars is as far as it goes?!? Review: I think that this movie is the most touching, sensitive movie I've ever seen. Contact makes people realize how important we really are and how significant life is. Also, it shows a perspective on the univserse that I've never realized before. It makes me look up at the stars and really wonder if there is intelligent life out there that might contact us soon. If you haven't seen Contact or read the book, you are making a really huge mistake. Jodie Foster and the rest of the cast in that movie were the best actors for the part. This movie deserves more than 5 stars!!
