Summary: Best Movie in the World
Review: When I first heard of the movie, i thought it was going to be a bore. But after watching it I realized that it was the best movie in the entire world! I used to watch it very time I went babysitting but then realized that I should just buy it. So I did. I think I have seen it more that 15 times but I love it every time I watch it. I read the book after I saw the movie but it was VERY different. I still enjoyed it though! Now I have both the movie and the book and my family gets sick of me watching it. But I think that they chose an awesome cast with excellent actors. It is truly the best movie in the entire world!

Summary: What a relief!
Review: Unlike the many alien movies of this century, this movie manages to deliver an alternate vision of what our contact with different beings could be like. A truly terrific film that really delivers; I absolutely loved it. The DVD version is good, but would be great if it included a Dolby Surround 2.0 track.

Summary: Contact
Review: A very slow moving film, with a poor ending. Good ideas but I don't think the director knew how to end the film.

Not recommended!

Summary: Required Viewing
Review: I read the book when it first came out and loved it. The movie was different, but fulfilling. It is an excellent treatment of material that is hard to express as a movie the masses will want to see. This is one of the few science-based films made; most are science-fantasy or space-operas. The DVD adds to the final product with audio commentaries and effects explanations. Read the book, buy the DVD and share it all with friends.

Summary: CONTACT Mixes Technology & Humanity
Review: It's been a long time since a big-budget Hollywood movie moved me as much as this film did. And CONTACT is *huge*! There are special effects galore; a broad, sweeping story concerning outer space and alien contact; and lots of technology in between. But at its heart is Jodie Foster. What a performance! I never knew she could be so soulful. She plays the resourceful, plucky heroine again, but this time Ms. Foster opens up and shows us so much more depth. The scene in which she witnesses the cosmos and cries, "They should have sent a poet" is breathtaking.

Now, the DVD is pretty cool too! Ms. Foster's commentary channel is a revelation. And the step-by-step process of creating the digital effects is interesting as well. It is truly amazing what computers have done for visual effects. I'm not sure I understand how some of the effects were done even after watching the demo reels on the DVD!

They've truly done a first class job on this DVD. The film is remarkable and the DVD simply proves (again!) the superiority of the format over VHS.

Summary: Pathetic Plot; Great Directorship and Effects
Review: The sound and digital film transfer and the DVD's extra feature, for example, the commentaries, the look at how special effects were create were excellent. The opening was terrific, as were many of the clever film techniques (when the little girl runs into the bathroom and we switch from a direct view of her running into the bathroom to her reflection). However, I found the characterization of government officals totally Hollywood. "If they're so smart," said the National Security Advisor,"why didn't they send the message in English?" What? Why does Hollywood continue to portray people in those positions as that stupid? I know some of those people and they are nothing like the paranoid, ignorant individuals portrayed in this film. (The "priest" walking in late to the high-level meeting in the White House with a lame "Sorry, ma'am" would have been wildly inappropriate in real life.) Also, why was she away for 18 hours and on her return no time had passed? What happened to Einstein? The religion-science debate was weakly portrayed, as well. Incredibly superficial. Why the pseudo-priest? So we can have Foster and McConaughey in bed with each other? This movie had great potential. See Gattaca or Blade Runner if you want depth and not "Hollywood."

Summary: MY FIRST DVD AND FAVORITE
Review: This is the first one I ever got for myself and to this day it's still my favorite. The Making of..., commentary, and interviews are just added pluses to this incredible film. It's DVD at its best. Ellie's wild adventure through space and time could not have been seen any better than this. This is what DVD is made for. Experience it!

Summary: No. 1 DVD - it doesn't get better than this
Review: Excellent acting, outstanding directing and a thrilling story combine to produce an absolute masterpice of the science-fiction genre. SF - yes - but they make you believe it could happen exactly like this (and who knows - it might...). One of the most interesting facets of this movie is the fact that it has something that is rarely seen in Hollywood: a female heroine! Jodie foster brilliantly portrais a woman who is strong, intelligent, driven, courageous but also sensitive and emotional. Easily the strongest female character since Sigourney Weaver in "Alien". The DVD is a showcase in itself: the 5.1 digital sound is clearly the best in over 100 DVDs I've seen, extremely dynamic (if you have a subwoofer: tie it to the floor for the "liftoff" and journey parts of the movie or else it will bounce all across your living room), there are wonderful directional effects aplenty, the dialogues are crisp and easy to understand and the score is a beauty, too. For me the highlight are the full-length commentaries of Jodie Foster and director Zemeckis. They offer interesting and often humorous first hand insight into the making of this great movie. You learn a great deal about filmmaking (much more than through any "making-of" featurette), share toughts, feelings, even doubts of the people who brought this masterpiece to you and even learn about some memorable human episodes that happened during the shoot. Last but not least the image quality is very good, the contrast is high, the tonal balance is beautiful and the sharpness is way above what VHS could ever offer. This DVD is a true gem - I recommend it to everybody!

Summary: it's a compromise, not a contradiction
Review: this movie is definitely no garbage! it's a materpiece! for people who didn't like it just because it's about scientific facts and spiritual beliefs mixed together in a pot. my only word to them is "sorry". you people are just to pious to accept it, or should i say "narrow-minded"? for people who just didn't like the ending, perhaps i can try to enlighten you a little. this movie indeed has a genius ending. it 's not a contradiction between scientific facts and spiritual beliefs. quite the opposite, it's a compromise between the two which have been opposing each other for as long as they exist. for people who are just looking for pure sci-fi, this movie might not satisfy. for people who are looking for pure holy stuff, forget it. this is a movie for open-minded people.

Review: this movie is certainly no garbage! it's a masterpiece! for people who didn't like it just because it's about scientific facts and spiritual beliefs mixed together in a pot. my only word to them is "sorry", you people are just too pious to accept it, or should i say "narrow-minded"? for people who just didn't like the ending, perhaps i can try to enlighten you a bit. this movie is not a contradiction between scientific facts and spiritual beliefs, as you might think at first. it's a compromise between these two fields that have been opposing each other for as long as they exist. for people who are just looking for pure sci-fi, this movie might not satisfy. for people who are looking for pure spiritual stuff, forget it. this movie is for open-minded people.
