Summary: good, but why no widescreen?
Review: This was a very great animated film, but why wasn't it released in it's original widescreen 2.35:1 format? It does state right on the disc that it's in widescreen, but it is not. If it was indeed in widescreen, I would have rated it four stars. The only flaw I saw in the film itself is that the antagonist's character really isn't focused on enough to become truly fearful.

Summary: Not Perfect but one of the Nicer Ones!
Review: This movie has a lot going for it, Superb animation, memorable songs, the characters on the whole are very likable, though a couple of improvements could have been made. Starting with Anastasia herself. Who seemed a bit too self centered for my tastes. Which is pretty common with female characters in most animated films, but she in particular seems to be driven ONLY by her own needs. Wanting to know about her past and finding her family is fine, but it would have been nice if she had be shown to express concern for, or helping out someone else during the course of the movie. To this day I still think the most enduring female character in an animated movie has to be Mrs. Frisby from The Secret of Nimh. A character motivated not by finding Prince Charming, but who's strife and hidden courage comes from trying to save the life of her child. A character you truly feel for. I really wish more characters could be written like that.It would have also been better to see more of why Rasputin hated the Romanovs so much, which BTW makes you wonder, if he was out to obliterate the Romanovs completely why didn't he go after the Grandmother, wasn't she one too? I do believe Anastasia is a really good film, if not perfect, and I recommend seeing it. And after you do, check out The Secret of Nimh, which I think is Don Bluth's BEST animated film!

Review: This a great children-friendly account of the Anastasia Romanov situation. It is much better than Disney movies in that Anastasia actually has some backbone and a mind of her own- the scene where she slaps Dimitri comes to mind. The animation is great and my favorite song is "Once Upon a December."

Summary: Don Bluth's best since "All Dogs Go To Heaven"
Review: I don't want to rehash everthing everyone has already said. I agree with most of it: the animation was good, the songs were wonderful, the characters were fasinating. I would, however, like to add a note in defense of the film's "villians", Rasputian and Bartok. Christopher Lloyd was Rasputian, and he made Rasputian undoubtedly the best character villian in the history of animated films. He got so _into_ his role, obviously having a blast with his performance while at the same time doing a wonderful acting job. Rasputian's voice will send chills down your spine! I had no trouble believing that Rasputian was a "real" person (yes, I _know_ he was a real person, but I am talking about his cartoon version), insane and totally determined to get revenge. A few have said that Bartok, the white albino bat that is Rasputian's sidekick, is an unnecessary character, but I disagree. KUDOS to Hank Azaria as Bartok; there was some much-needed comic relief in all of Bartok's lines. His timing was excellent, and he got the best lines of the film. A character was needed for Rasputian's lines and personality to bounce off of: Bartok is the ideal character, or bat, for the job! His sense of humor made the scenes all the more enjoyable, and were something of a grounding point. I can't explain it any better than that! To Hank Azaria; great job! This was a great movie, for kids and adults alike. Enjoy! . . . and see the film "All Dogs Go To Heaven" while you're at it! :)

Summary: A very brave venture into animation by Fox!
Review: Looks like Disney won't be the only company that produces high-quality animated features those days! I got to see it on Valentine's Day a few years before and I really like new twists in the usual fairy-tale storyline, like the young Anastasia going on a long journey with a handsome young man like they're longtime comrades and the 3-D animation of the train about to crash is really awesome! I also love how creepy and repulsive the villian is, especially when his body parts slowly comes apart to spook his poor little ablino bat familiar. And whether this movie matches the actual story about the fate of a Russian royal family or not, this is a pure fantasy containing fantasy elements like ghosts dancing about in a deserted courtroom. And on the other hand, there are quite a few things that I don't really like about this animated wonder: plucky young Anastasia eventually turns out to be a teensy-teenie little princess with a teensy-teenie waist, just like any other Disney heroine. And of course, she gets swept off her feet by young romantic love after all.

Review: Anastasia is a movie that you either love or hate. I don't see how people can dislike it though, I personally loved it! So what if it wasn't historically true? The plot is so well developed and it is such a real movie. When you watch it, it doesn't even seem animated. That's how real the characters are. Anya is the best heroine in an animated film ever! She actually has a MIND and doesn't just jump off to marry the first man she sees. Dimitri is the best hero in an animated film as well. And I love the chemistry between them! Meg Ryan and John Cusack did such a wonderful job voicing them! They aren't dry like other animated characters in other films. This movie is better than anything Disney ever put out! I think it's a great movie for all ages!I loved the characters, songs and story! The only boring thing was Rasputin and Bartok who could have been left out, but other than that I think this is a wonderful film.

Summary: Have To See It,It's a classic!
Review: This morning for Christmas, I recieved the movie "Anistasia" as a present! So far, I have watched it 3 times tonight!This is one of those movies the whole family can watch countless times without getting bored. Also,The movie has a love story side and an adventerous side.. The musical songs are simply enchanting! Near the end,I almost cry everytime! By the way,I feel in love with John Cusack's characte,Demetrie! He's adorable. This is much better than any disney movie I have ever seen because the main character,Anistasia (Anya ) has a true mind of her own, and is not the steriotyped prim priss goody you seem to see in all the Disney movies. That's one of the things I love about it..she isn't really overpowered and she follows no ones rules if she dosn't agree! Everytime I watch, I notice something I didn't notice before. I love this movie so much I even bought the soundtrack and the music box Anistasia recieves from her grandmother. The supporting characters (as well as the main ) do an excellent job! I don't know if I've mentioned this, but Meg Ryan and John Cusack have such wonderful voices, and certinally can act. This is a wonderful combination of Comedy,alittle tragety,love story,and compation! All right,enough of this. I won't spoil the plot for you. Go out and enjoy it yourself!

Summary: Pure Magic
Review: I loved this movie! It's better than all of Disney's recent releases. I especially love its heroine, Anastasia. She's the best of the animated leading ladies. Ranks right there with Ariel and Belle. She makes me fall in love with her. I loved the movie's song, animation, and the supporting characters. The directors of this flim had outdone themselves. I recommend buying this movie on DVD. Whether you watch the first and the 30th time, "Anastasia" is an animated gem for you and family. Perfect for future generations as well, you're gonna love this movie! It's "Anastasia" for sure!

Review: Really liked it! Great animation for Fox's first animated moved. I know is was not histricaly correct - but kept me and the kids happy. Cannot wait to see the next animation feature "Titan A.E." which the trailer was at the beginning of Star Wars.

Summary: Fair movie, but "NIMH" and Disney classics were better
Review: I saw Anastasia when it was in theaters as there were lots of hype over it, and then later on I saw it again on video. It was 20th Century Fox's first feature animation, and the first one Don Bluth worked on since after a series of flops. First of all there were a lot of fuss that Anastasia isn't historically correct, like that the Bolshevik Revolution wasn't based magic and Anastasia was dead with her family. True but that's the least of the film's problems. Based on rumors that the czarist daughter survived the slaughter, the movie invents the plot that she grew up as an amnemic orphan and two con men scheme to have her pretend to be Anastasia, though she actually is. Often the film runs well on this idea, though I though it had slow, over-detailed plot, which seemed to be formulic but some nice twists to juice it up. Also, although the film has a nice smooth color sceme, I thought that in some cases the animation is not as good as Disney's. The computer animation mixed into here doesn't blend in well with the hand-drawn art, likewise the traditional hand-made animation seemed at most times sluggish and at sparse moments sloppy; especially when Anastasia's face when at the climax she screams "I'm not afraid of you!" And the main characters themselves weren't likeable, Dimir was often dull and Anastasia is hard to sympathise as a heroine. And the villain and the cute sidekicks (a puppy and a talky white bat) didn't seem to have a purpose for being in the film. The musical songs weren't so great either; either unmemerable or as with "Incredable Journey", have little or no melody. In my opinion I think Bluth's own "Secret of NIMH", and Disney classics like "Beauty and the Beast", "The Fox and the Hound" rank better .
