Summary: Should Of Made More Of A Stir
Review: Pitch Black has got to be one of the most underated films of last year. The film was good and the cast were mostly new actors which made the film better as you werent familiar with their previous roles. The film is about a space ship that lands on a planet that has three suns. The planet is inhabited with aliens that are afraid of the sunlight as it will kill them amd will only come out in the dark. It just so happens that they land on the planet just as it is going to have to have a total eclipse. (You dont have to be a genious to work out what happens next) The plot is good, the effects even better, which means that it is a shame that so many people missed out on this film. This film is definitly worth watching and not cast aside as it is not just another alien rip-off

Summary: Absolutely Terrible!
Review: The trailer alone was a hell of a lot more entertaining than this contrived piece of drivel. Not only was it devoid of suspense or any actual shocks (save for one right at the end), but it was so utterly, mind-numbingly BORING! For the love of God, had the makers even heard of pacing? Nothing happens for about an hour - just a bunch of close ups in the extremely annoying 'bleached' look.

It is such a shame as some of the scenes have great potential (such as when Radha is trapped in the underground cavern), but alas, due to a horrendous and non existant score, the suspense is lost. The only two redeeming features about this terrible waste of celluloid are A), Claudia Black and B), the fact that the downright repugnant actors get either chopped in two or beheaded in a rather gruesome fashion.

I would not recommend this title to absolutely anyone, unless you happened to like the abhorrent 'Urban Legend' or the worst film I've ever seen, 'Star Wars: Episode One'. In closing, I would just like to add that Star Wars: Episode One was *a lot* scarier than both Urban Legend and Pitch Black combined...

Summary: A candle in the dark.
Review: I had expected PITCH BLACK to be a cheesy, sci-fi movie of somewhat poor quality. I couldn't have been more surprised. It is obvious that the film didn't entail a huge budget (there probably would have been at least one familiar name in the cast if there had been). But some of the best films of all time are the ones that didn't have much of a budget (e.g. Rocky). PITCH BLACK isn't a great sci-fi movie, but it is better than most.

The story was quite believable and does not deny it's homage to the classic ALIEN. The acting is wonderful and the cinematography and brilliant lighting (or lack of) that conceals the film's small budget (yet fits wonderfully with the plot) is pure genius. The movie kept me both in suspense and full of interest. PITCH BLACK is one of the most underrated movies of 2000. Like the characters in the film, perhaps the movie can finally find a way out of the shadows and make its way into the light of respect.

Summary: Excellent, Radha Mitchell and Vin Diesel are spectacular.
Review: Pitch Black is an excellent sci-fi thriller. As a matter of fact, I don't think it would be a stretch to say it's been the best since James Cameron's Aliens. I've noticed a lot of acclaim for Vin Diesel's performance, which is well-deserved, but not as many people tend to mention Radha Mitchell. She does deliver this film's best performance (just slightly above Diesel) and creates the most likeable character. Plus, Mitchell is also simply one of the most beautiful young actresses I've seen in a long while. Hopefully, more people will start giving her the credit she deserves.

Summary: Scary but Hokey
Review: This movie excels as a suspenseful horror flick, but the plotline will disappoint you. Space travellers marooned on a desert planet have to cope with he threat of alien carnivores (are they alien if they're on their own planet?)while also contend with a known serial killer among their ranks. The premise is great, and sets up the tone for paranoia throughout the film. This paranoia, and not the alien beasties is what makes this movie so suspenseful. However, where this movie tragically fails, is in the hollywood ending. Oh, come on People!! I'm so sick and tired of films glorifying serial killers who in the end discover they have a heart of gold. If you're gonna create a mood of paranoia, it Better be Justified! This goody-two-shoes serial killer bullshit destroyed the whole movie. And what's up with those stupid alien monsters. They live on a planet that gets near constant sunlight, yet the light hurts them. How the hell did they ever evolve?? They look suspiciously similar to the critters from starship troopers too. Very creative guys.

Summary: An All-Around Good Film
Review: This movie is not spectacular in any respect but it does deserve a perfect rating. Why? Because of the combination of everything together is what made this film outstanding. David Twohy's direction of Pitch Black is just great and there isn't a bad shot in the entire film. The choice not to cast any huge names from America was wise because of the fact the entire cast was superb both individually and as a team. All of them were excellent! The plot, though not very sound, was at least in existence, which is more than can be said for most of the sci-fi/horror films that are being produced in America at the moment. Plus, the special effects were very well done. The choice to shoot in two different tints with the different suns on the planet (blue for the blue sun, yellow for the yellow sun) made the movie that much more interesting. Those raptors, the predators in the movie, were also just great and so was the sound effects they made. The unrated version also sheds some extra light on the plot as a whole and is well worth viewing. The extras on the DVD are worth looking at as well, especially the commentary. The only thing lacking in the entire film is the music, which doesn't really go with the film, but it's easy to get past that. If you're a fan of any sort of sci-fi or horror films, this one is definitely worth watching. Also, for any Farscape fan, this is a chance to see Claudia Black in something other than the show.

Summary: Afraid of the dark? You will be...
Review: Whoever said that Sci-Fi is only ever any good with huge budgets and big stars must be eating their hat now.

Pitch Black, with a cast of relative unknowns and relatively little money just goes to prove the opposite.

This dark, scary "bug hunt" movie will definitely not leave lovers of the genre wanting anything. Maybe not thought provoking but a great ride nonetheless.

Summary: Finally, A Good Alien Environment!
Review: Most film makers cheat on sci-fi by trying to make us believe that a desert scene with a colored gel taped to the camera should pass muster as another planet. Twohy goes the extra mile here, creating believable outdoors scenes, good characters, and great monsters. A real winner that will hopefull put the makers of the Alien series on their toes.

Summary: Juicy Popcorn cruncher
Review: This was a fun movie to watch on the weekends with the wind blowing outside, ice forming on the windows--sort of like the weather in this really effective excursion into fantasy. The actor who makes this movie really work is the sexy, powerful Vin Diesel. My one gripe: he never took off his jersey! Some scenes would have benefited creatively if the audience could have seen much more of Disel in the altogether(it's my same complaint with 'Gladiator'--Russell Crowe is always covered up). We wanted to see all of Diesel's muscles at work. I could see this guy easily in the Marlon Brando role in "The Wild Ones." Diesel will be around for a long time.

Summary: Disapointing
Review: This is a disapointing movie. If I did not have a general interest for all SciFi movies, I would not have been able to sit ttrough it. The story is minimal. Character development is non-existent (people are killed, and nobody cares; example: Zeke kills a surviver by mistake, and there is no comment or critique by the others). I can not even believe that the "uncut" version has only character development scenes added. How low can you go.

The story is unbelievable, and at times very unlogical. I had to ask myselfs at times, where the hell does he/she comes now from. Another example: One moment they complain how to drag 4 35kg batteries to a spaceship. Presented as a huge problem. Eclipse starts. All of the sudden one character says: "Quick, the cat is solar". They jump on and drive to the ship. ??? Did I miss something here? This is a poor excuse for a story.

If you like low-budget horror movies, this one is for you.

If you like SciFi, hands off, don't buy. Rent will do fine for this one.

DVD picture quality: Excelent DVD features: Poor

Positive: Multi-kulti stuff. Refreshing. Technical execution. Plus, the DVD is very good.
