Summary: Excellent - A thriller for eternity
Review: I am sure all you have seen one movie that you enjoyed tremendously, has the movie Godzilla ever come to mind, well if it has not yet, it soon will after you watch it. Godzilla was an exciting movie to millions of viewers in North America, and around the world. With its phenomenal special effects and its emotional and unique beginning to it’s exciting and thrilling ending, Godzilla will keep you on the edge of your chair. The movie definitely deserved an oscar for special effects. I am sure that there will not be another movie for a long time that will give the same affect to people as Godzilla . - FIVE STARS BABY!!

Summary: Very, Very Bad Indeed
Review: The American Godzilla looks like Dennis Rodman in a lizard suit, despite the much-vaunted CGI trimmings. Jean Reno and Matthew Broderick are totally wasted with this vacuous plot. Maria Pitalo, as Broderick's girlfriend, is irritating beyond words to say. I kept hoping she would end up getting eaten, or stomped or something.

The thing that destroyed this movie for me was the ham-handed, brain-dead, typically American "reconstruction" of the Godzilla legend. They cheated him out of his fire breath, and they gave him a sex change. The addition of Jurassic Park/Aliens style little Godzillas that chase everyone all over the place was...well, just dumb.

Independence Day was fun and stupid. In that movie, Emmerich and Co. took all the biggest cliches of UFO attack movies and created a loving, loud and ridiculous tribute. Here, they miscalculate. There's too much stolen material (particularly from Alien and Jurassic Park), and they obviously don't "get" the Godzilla legend, nor can they figure out what to do with it. They failed to understand the truth that in every Godzilla movie, Godzilla is the hero and the main point of interest. Here, Godzilla is just a monster, and the movie tries to distract us with subplots and people. Emmerich & Co. didn't understand that nobody really cares about the humans in a Godzilla movie; they're secondary, only there to react to Godzilla himself.

I was totally disappointed and irritated by this poor attempt at a Godzilla film. Fortunately, after this movie's disappointing box office performance and critical reviews, the studio dropped Godzilla like a radioactive rock. Toho quietly revived the fallen and disgraced King of Monsters, and brought him back in fine style with "Godzilla 2000," which I would recommend wholeheartedly over this terrible, boring, annoying movie.

Review: Very enjoyable, great visual effects. Not a brilliant premise, but then again it wouldn't be the first Gozilla movie not to make much sense.

Summary: soundtrack a&r
Review: This is an interesting soundtrack from the film GODZILLA. The WALLFLOWERS disappoint with their rendition of the Bowie/Eno HEROES. I miss the compelling phrasing. I do enjoy COME w/ ME as performed by Puff Daddy and Jimmy Page. Even if some of my friends who are Led Zeppelin fans hate it, I think it is an exciting overhaul of a rock standard. "No Shelter" is a great sample of RAGE.

Summary: GODZILLA
Review: To start off, I don't think that creating a fully computer-generated version of Godzilla was in any way an act of disrespect for guy in the green rubber suit. I prefer to think of it more as a chance to see Godzilla the way he was truley meant to be seen. However, I was a little underimpressed by Godzilla's character. For the most part, he seemed oblivous to humans, and didn't really interact with any until the movie's finale. Which is too bad. It would've been something to see Godzilla grab people off the streets, or turned them into a pavement patty, but this movie is rated PG-13, so perhaps it was better for the target audience to see him destroy famous landmarks. But then, who was really doing all the damage? From what I saw, it looked like the military was doing a better job of destroying New York than Godzilla.

I also think it would've helped if the movie hadn't spent so much time in the dark. If you ask me, Godzilla looked a lot more real during the day than he did at night. The lighting never looked quite right on him when it was dark He was always too bright, and never looked as ominous as you think he would. Yet, when you see him attacking New York for the first time during the day, he looks very real. I especially liked the nice camera work as you see him pass by 'Animal' at Grand Central Station. It gave the viewer the first chance to finally see Godzilla from eye level, allowing you to get a true sense of his size. It's too bad the movie's story and characters weren't as good as the effects and camera work. The characters were boring and handeld poorly, especially that whole Mayor Siskell and Ebert thing. What was that all about? And there were far too many scenes that seemed a little too familiar from other movies, most of which looked like Speilberg's. Godzilla destroying a pier, towing boats backwards, and eating a helicopter. I've seen the shark in Jaws and Jaws 2 do all of that. And the lengthy scene involving the hatchlings running loose in Madison Square Garden looked an awful lot like the 'raptor's in the kitchen' scene in Jurassic Park, crossed with the part in Gremlins when the little monsters take over a movie theater. I could go on and on, but I'd rather not. I'd like to finish this review while I'm still young.

In short, if you want to see amazing special effects, and Godzilla, the way you've never seen him/her before, this movie might be of some interest to you. But if you're hoping for a creature-feature combined with a exellent story, you're better off watching one of the many movies this film so shamelessly imitated.

Summary: What happened???
Review: This had some of the elements for a great movie: Godzilla and a big budget. But the bad elements, bad acting and no plot, ruined the film.

What we got was a boring, stupid, overblown mess. I assume the makers of this dreck got bored too since that had to throw in that terrible "love story" subplot and the "baby Godzillas". Even feeding Matthew Broderick to Godzilla at the film's start would not have saved this awful, awful movie.

Summary: Watching Grass Grow is more mind Stimulating than this movie
Review: This Has to be the only movie I ever saw that when I was in the Theater the only thing I could think of was damn when the hell is this movie going to finish. This Movie just Plain Sucks! Trust me dont waste your money.

Summary: Best movie ever made.
Review: I have never seen a better movie. In every way this movie rocks even though its PG-13 its just as good for kids as adults. The picture is awsome. As real as it gets. The old Godzilla made in Japan is pathetic. A stupid guy in a suit is not my kind of movie. The new Godzilla is bigger, smarter, and faster. Nonstop action to the last. Great sound very powerful roars and speacial effects. I watched this movie several times and it still makes my jaw drop. Watch Godzilla because size does matter.

Summary: Allow me to explain my rating!
Review: Besides the 2 or 3 lulls (especially one BIG one after the rousing start) Godzilla 1998 is an underrated classic. The obvious draw is the top of the heap special effects. I was out of breath during several long scenes that are pumped up versions of several Jurassic Park moments (reminded of the T-rex chase and raptors in the kitchen). There's enough here to justify better ratings than people are giving it. On DVD it's unbelievable. The production values are top drawer in visuals and sound. Believe the double 5 for picture and sound. Spectacular!

There is a worm in this apple however. Many people were put off by the ludicrist dialog in some scenes (mostly involving the tv news people). I think scrapping these scenes in favor of something more suspenseful would have been advantageous. They needed to establish several key characters and have them killed to create more tension. Those French guys are like Star Trek "red shirts". They unfortuanately can't run or get out of the way as fast as a dingy New York Blond and her nerdy worm-lovin boyfriend!

Godzilla has its share of genuine laughs too. All of the scenes with the French Foreign Legion were right on target. I loved the poke at the American military who couldn't hit the broad side of a Godzilla. They were best, and funny, busting up the buildings while the big lizard bobbed and weaved like Evander Holyfield. Hilarious!

The ending was a good idea-bittersweet. However, they could've went for something more like Jaws (complete with a catch phrase: "This one's for Tokyo!!").

It's ironic that in a time of ultra-realistic special effects that a movie like this can feel at home with its ancestors. Some of us get it and some don't. For the good parts sit back and enjoy...for the not so good have your Mystery Science Theater 3000 buddies over for some laughs.

Summary: What a load of garbage
Review: Only the people behind ID4 would churn out such garbage like "Godzilla". After all, ID4 was a real stinker too. I can't believe they took a classic character like Godzilla and mutate him into something godawful like this piece of filth that was passed off as a movie. Give me the man-in-the-rubber suit over the digitalized version any day. The writing (or should I say lack thereof?) was pretty apparent, the acting...well I've seen better acting from five year olds, and the large amount of money spent on this turkey of a movie was thrown away. At least the original Godzilla is fun and campy. The overdubbing are so ridiculous you have to laugh but the lack of acting in this modern day version is offensive to this diehard Godzilla fanatic.
