Rating: Summary: How overlooked can a film get? Review: Well, well. I picked up this DVD and have not been more surprised in a long time. Now, I am a huge movie fan (as most of you are) and see A LOT of movies. Now, given the dreck that is mainstreamed these days, it's a damn shame Modern Vampires was direct to video. But for this who catch it, it is a great find. Not only a nice take on the vampire genre, liberally campy of course, it is just down right hilarious. I have not proceeded to laugh out loud at a film in quite some time. Supplied with the fact that I couldn't believe the number of "known" actors in the film. From the likes of legends like Rod Steiger and Udo Kier, to young upstarts Natasha Watson and Casper Van Dien (forget Starship Troopers, he is even better here, and gets to show some range). Toss in perennial supporters like Rob Passtorelli and Kim Catrall and a host of others. Bottom line: this movie is a hidden gem. And forget the ridiculous packaging. It is completely misleading. Oh, and if you have a DVD player, get that version. The commentary track with Van Dien and Director Elfman is one of the most entertaining anf funny AND informative I have run across. Get bit by Modern Vampires and I promise, you too will believe....
Rating: Summary: Not like any dumb Hollywood movie. This one's original! Review: This film is just too cool! It's the smartest, sexiest vampire film ever made. Most Hollywood movies are so dumb and un-original. This is a refreshing change.
Rating: Summary: Very different, not for everyone, but FANTASTIC! Review: This film may too wierd for everyone's tastes, but I thought it was fantastic. The cast was very good and the humor kept me smiling and laughing out loud. The love scene definitely leaves you with something to think about!
Rating: Summary: A sexy, funny movie. Review: This is a sexy funny movie. A real oddball and hard to compare. It was great to watch and a lot of fun for those that like vampire films. Casper Van Dien is really too much! All the other vampires were good as well. A thoroughly enjoyable film.
Rating: Summary: Watch out for the first ten minutes Review: OKay, I did like this movie alot, but after the first ten minutes I was prepared to come on here, and give it a bad review. The acting was...well, blah. HOwever after that the move did become very good. The guy off of the Drew CArey show was great, and he really made me laugh with his character. And the story, well it was okay. It was better than some vampire stories I have seen, and I liked that there was no big disaster like the end of the world that was causing this vampire movie being made. However, in the beginning again, the dialog drags this movie down with to much plot in the first few minutes, however it did free up the rest of the movie for some good things. If your a vampire fan, this movie is for you. If you are a vampire movie fan, you will want to pick it up for you. However if you are not into dark movies, then stay away from it.
Rating: Summary: Utterly wild, utterly sophisticated, too much FUN! Review: This is an utterly fun, WILD RIDE, through the underground world of bloodsuckers in Los Angeles. Modern Vampires is a well written, well acted satire on our culture. It is certainly the most original vampire movie in last several decades. The cover art on the package is the only stupid thing about the film (makes it look like a cheap "Blade" knockoff, which the film bears no resemblence to in any way). This film is too much fun!
Rating: Summary: Brilliant, dark humor, and sexy too! Review: This is an exceedingly well written, though low budget vampire tale that manages to inform as well as outrage. It is an edgy satire, both gross and nuanced, using vampires as a metaphor for modern day amorality. The cast (Rod Steiger and Casper Van Dien especially) are great. There is no other film even remotely like this. I highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: Horrifically Nifty! Review: Modern Vampires is a DEFINATE must see. The first time I saw this film I just about died. It is brilliant, hillarious and horrifically nifty. What makes this film required viewing? A) Well, it's clever. Too smart for the average bear, perhaps. A textbook perfect plot acts as a backbone behind a wild and witty satire. To the undescerning viewer the very nature of the strongest humor may obscure this very solid base, but it is very much there. Each character is developed beautifully, the pacing keeps you on the edge of your seat, yet at the same time a deep and intelligent slam to Hollywood is being thrown. B) Casper Van Dien is a feast for the eyes. The rest of the cast is marvelous, too. I especially enjoyed the comedic perfection of Craig Ferguson (who also plays the mean boss on the Drew Carey show). C) It's REALLY gutsy. See, people call themselves brave, they call themselves politically incorrect, but they are not. Richard Elfman the truly brave one. Not only is the film hillarious and enjoyable, but driving it all is a biting social commentary. He's not afraid to satirize anyone. I wish I could see more truly gutsy AND truly intelligent AND truly entertaining films like this. SO, go get it. Buy the dvd, 'cause it's uncut and is rumored to have special features too. I'm already on the waiting list! Modern Vampires is destined to become a cult classic.
Rating: Summary: Yes! This movie ROCKS! Review: Finally a movie that tells it like it is! No more of that happy romantic vampire tripe, this is a DARK DARK HILARIOUS film. Guarantees to offend and delight! But more than that it actually has a good story. You will not be walking away from this and feeling betrayed and empty: no cheap, predictable stuff here. Campy, dark humor, lots of gore and blood, and Natasha Gregson-Wagner.. What else could you ask for?
Rating: Summary: If you love horror/comedy, this is not to be missed! Review: This is the craziest vampire movie that has ever been made. Performances are great, the music is great, and the satire about contemporary culture is edgy and original. Modern Vampires is almost impossible to describe. My friends and I saw it at a festival and the whole audience went wild. We have been talking about it for weeks. Some people may get offended because it so politically incorrect, although every group seems to get the pie of satire equally on it's face. If you have an outrageous sense of humor and like sexy vampires, this film is not to be missed!
