Summary: Fun Family Movie
Review: The Mummy is the story of a priest who is executed after killing the Pharoah 3000 years ago. He is locked in a coffin and eaten alive (we don't see the actually eating) by little bugs called "scarabs." Cursed with an eternity of living death, he whole tombsite is buried in the desert. Anyone who finds this Mummy will be cursed and "may destroy the earth". Since the "curse" was over 3000 years ago, and since his tomb is reportedly filled with gold and treasures, there are a few people who will risk the curse for the gold.

What follows is fun. It is a tongue in check, whimsical approach at this classic subject. Great action, fast paced, with fun for most of the family; I think most people who watch it will probably enjoy it, if you know what to expect. This is not a horror movie. Instead the film makers made a deliberate choice to make an action movie, which pokes fun at itself and its audience. The only other movie I have seen, similiar in style and substance to The Mummy would be "Bordello of Blood". "The Mummy" doesn't have any nudity, and the violence is a little less graphic, but the special effects are better. I think anyone from 10 years old or up, who likes horror movies, or science fiction, will enjoy this film.

Summary: Good audience pleaser, good movie.
Review: If you are buying "The Mummy" on DVD, clearly a large percentage of your motivation for doing as such is your awe for its fine dolby digital 5.1 audio track, clear-cut details/fine colours, and computer-generated special effects. There are many DVDs with poor to mediocre sound tracks, like "Chicken Run," but this movie is certainly *not* one of them.

I don't really care what the movie is about. The fact is that it tests the limits of my sound equipment, effectively making guests pleased, and produces smiles amongst the audience.

For myself, I find the content of the movie to be spectacular despite what I have just said. Fraser's acting is uniquely humorous, and coupled with the rest of "the crew," should be acknowledged positively.

I give the DVD version of "the Mummy" all 5 stars.

Summary: My Fave Movie of ALL TIME
Review: I love this movie! It's got a great story, interesting screenplay, great special effects and of course an amazing cast! Brendan Fraser (one of my all time fave actors!) is just as funny in this as in anything else he's ever done! Rachel Weisz is tremendously...well interesting let's say as the general mess of a librarian. I think she does quite a good job. And John Hannah is hilarious as her cowardly, somewhat alchaholic brother. I reccomend this movie to everyone. And watch out for the sequal in May!!

Summary: Great Fun, yet shouldn't be in the "horror" section.
Review: This movie had a hilarious, top of the line cast and included scenes that were very funny. The plot was great, along with the nearly breath-taking special effects that are scene in this great film. But like I said before, I don't think this film should be in the horror section at all. Although this movie was great fun and wildly entertaining, it was a "could-have-been" horror film thrown in the garbage! When I first saw this movie, (which was at home in a pitch-black room)the part that really scared the crap out of me was when Mr. Burns was in the dark hall, (alone) and the mummy was whispering and growling while running all around him. And since the halls were covered with cob webs and he was helpless without his glasses, it made the perfect horror scene. After that scene was over, I immediately told my self: "This is gonna be a good, scary movie!" Then when the movie proceeded, the part that O'Connel growls back at Imhotep/mummy, really set the mood for "dumb!" Don't get me wrong, this movie was funny and wildly entertaining, yet the director Stephen Sommers and the writer(s) could have really scared the audience if they would have worked a lot harder.

Summary: This is not a Horror Movie
Review: In contrast to it's much better sequal, The Mummy really does not have much going for it. The humor and the action/adventure scenes are very forecd. There is not much story, and it has a pretty weak music score by Jerry Goldsmith (who is useually a better film composer). Forget this movie and see the much better, The Mummy Returns instead.

Summary: YEEEEEE awn
Review: Brenda Fraser, please go away! I cannot say this movie was mummy-rific or mummy-tastic, borrowing clever adjectives from some of the other reviewers. What I can say is that I am glad my roommate paid for the rental on this one.

The dialogue was canned and the story was absolutely formulaic, to the point where even moderately initiated moviegoers could see the whole plot unfold in the first ten minutes of the "film."

Actual sample dialogue: "we're in big trouble." Followed by the Mummy growling even louder and then, "We're in REALLY big trouble."

hmm... riveting..

The special effects were good, and earn it two stars, but ultimately we are left with a typical polished hollywood beauty and no personality.

Summary: A vastly amusing movie
Review: I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. While it lacks the lovely atmospheric creepiness of the 1932 film it claims to be a remake of, it has a good-natured sense of adventure and is well cast. In truth it seems to be more of a remake in the style of Hammer Studio's Mummy films, but thankfully does not include the title character lurching around shedding bandages everywhere. Considering the stomach-dropping, heart-sickening disappointment the other big "horror" remake,"The Haunting," from the summer this film came out, and despite the occasional plot-hole (but let's face it, this film wasn't intended to be a ground-breaking, truth-shattering film, it was meant to be entertainment), "The Mummy" did not deserve the poor reviews it got from the critics.

Summary: Surprisingly Good "Fun" Flick
Review: Sure, a five-year-old could sift through the various plot "holes." One sitting next to me was heard uttering to her mother, "If the mummy is afraid of cats, why don't they just keep the cat around all the time?"

That withstanding, the film is still a rousing good adventure with its tongue firmly placed in cheek. Not a horror film in the truest sense of the word, but a lavishly produced "throw back" to the matinees of old.

Summary: This "Mummy" Full of Special Character!
Review: "To be or NOT to be", a hack writer from the distant past once muttered while pondering the triple quagmire of trying to meet another deadline while suffering a simultaneous attack of writer's block AND cramp. Well, the 1999 version of "The Mummy" is quite comfortable being "Chopper" instead of "Yacky Doodle". There is plenty of bite with absolutely THE BEST DVD widescreen audio and visual technology available! (we'll leave the more sophisticated and intellectual version to Boris). Either way, it's a great show since it avoids serious accidents, and the "blood plasma" never gets mixed up! Rachel Weisz puts on a "Snagglepuss" of a performance, and steals the show outright! Her finest moment may have been the somewhat overlooked but excellent acting she displayed while walking the mysteriously moving ladder (something more likely to happen to "Scooby Doo"), and then having to explain the entire strange sequence of events to her rigid, no nonsense boss (the "Mr. Ranger" type)! Brendan Fraser is reduced to "second fiddle" despite his "Quick Draw McGraw antics both before and after Rachel bails him out of his incarcerated "George of the Jungle" dilemma. Perhaps the hangman's words to Rachel's character offers the best summary: "Are you telling me that this filthy, godless, son of a pig (not "Porky") knows how to find the city of the dead!!??" Fraser couldn't seem to make up his mind if he wanted to be "Pixie" or "Dixie" throughout the entire two hours so he settled for "Secret Squirrel" (after all, he had all the tools and knowledge that everyone needed). Oh Doctor! Does Kevin J. O'Connor as Beni Gabor (no relation to Zsa Zsa or Eva I suspect)) need some medical treatment after "bugging" the audience (not to mention our heroes) as the weasel villain personified??!! After his type of "dishonorable discharge", not even the likes of "Snoop and Blabber" could track him down! No less than seven, countem, seven, actors portrayed "The Mummy"--Not even granny's "Precious Pup" would dare sneer at that obsessive, compulsive example of pulling out all the stops!! All things considered, our characters are ruff 'n ready for a big blast of special effects and old fashioned fun--Even if it's not an old fashioned movie! But it's "Top Cat" all the way, and d-o-o-o-o-n't you forget it!

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Cheesy but fun
Review: This movie is cheesy and predictable, but I liked it enough to buy it nonetheless. Brendan Fraser is always good looking, and very good at playing this type of character. The special effects are well done, and the scenery is very pretty. This movie is a bit scary, but I found it to be much more an 'action-comedy' than anything else.
