Summary: I enjoyed it
Review: Nemo was pretty cool and Mr. Hyde could make his own line of movies.

Summary: Hey it was refreshing
Review: Sure it's not the Matrix (first one of course) but LXG was much better than some of the other crap that has been produced. I'm not a big fan of the prodution quality (look/feel/special effects) but nonetheless it was entertaining. I got a bias for Sean Connery and love watching Shah (Captain Nemo). I actually thought Stuart Townsend was a good cast too. Other than that not too much to complain about.

Summary: A Great Grand Spectacular Steampunk Adventure!
Review: I love steampunk. That is, the sci-fi genre that takes place in an alternative past. what the world would have been like if technology had been more advanced in the 18th and 19th centuries or beyond. Great stuff. And The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a great steampunk adventure.

Not only has it got a great title, it's one of the best action pictures of many years. Yes, it is a bit of a mess. And some scenes defy all logic. And the ending could have been better. But who cares? The rest is a grand spectacle. People either love LXG or hate it. I loved it. All these great literary figure teaming up to save the world, fantastic. Some people didn't care for Tom Sawyer being adding to the film since he wasn't in the original graphic novel, but I thought it worked well.

One quibble about the DVD, why isn't the movie's trailer contained in it? What we get instead is a lame public service message. I don't pay good money for one of the DVD features to be a public service message. Just give us the trailer instead. I have the USA DVD. I've heard the European DVD has many more extras. And Sean Connery is great to watch in almost anything!

My hats off to The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen! I'd love to see a sequel! Adios.

Summary: A little above the cut...
Review: I saw this both in the theater and bought it on DVD, so it rates the "a bit above average" three stars. For the critics, the thing that hurt this film so badly was its release in a year of premier releases. Pirates of the Carribean stole the show for a lot of otherwise pretty good films, which include the second Tomb Raider, third Matrix, third Terminator, and second X-Men. League falls behind most of them and lines up about equal to the third Terminator. It does better than Hulk in both story line and watchability (the split screen comic book style of Hulk was distracting and actually gave me a headache!).

Where the film fails is in the storyline itself. First, the characters are fictionalizations of fictional characters. Tom Sawyer never grew up with his world, Dorian Gray is out of place, Nemo was embittered against society (and never a pirate), and Quartermain was, well, boring at best. The one thing that saves the characterizations is that they are out of copyright and so are subject to being changed...

The story develops decently, but is a bit disjointed here and there. It moves along a little faster than perhaps good timing would dictate and the ending... well, there's a better way to end it and something more in keeping with the fun and games that this film should have contained...

Which is also why it fails. Where Jolie's Tomb Raider succeeds is the same place where Depp's pirate succeeds. It doesn't take itself too seriously. This film, while it works at times as a fun chase, has elements which are far too serious and if those were eliminated and some of the storyline fleshed out, this film could measure up to rate four stars.

Connery turns in his usual fine performance as do most of the other actors. Some of the film doesn't work (the black/white "revelation" while listening to an audio recording which, by the way carries a sound far above audibility and way out of the ability of that kind of player) while other parts do (Nemo's transportation, both on water and on land).

But, it is still a fun action film and if you like action/heroic comic books on film, this one works quite well...

Summary: "League" doesn't deserve the harsh criticism.
Review: Sean Connery is excellent. The subplots are intricate and fascinating. Where most people see a miserable failure, I see a solid action/fantasy flick, that left me begging for a sequal. The only reason I can come up with for the negative feedback is that viewers were not ready for an action movie that made them think.

I give this movie four stars: one for Sean, one for the fabulous premise, one for special effects, and one for excellent bonus features.

Don't listen to the critics. Give this movie a chance.

Summary: Extraordinarily bad!
Review: It's so sad to see the number of movies today that have well planned marketing hype yet fail to deliver. The Leugue sounded like it was going to be a great movie on paper... and the previews really wet my appetite... now after renting it on PPV... I can only thank the grace of God I didnt make a trip to the theater to see this one.

LXG takes a host of intrigueing 19th century literary characters - mina from dracula (now a vampire herself), Mr Hyde, Captain Nemo, and the invisible man among others - and puts them in a pre WW1 fight against a supervillain-type bad guy trying to spark war in europe and profit by selling arms.

Sound good? Yeah I tought so. the delivery however amounts to one of the silliest movies I've seen in a long time. Sean connery and decent special effects are the only things keeping me from pulling the 1 star trigger. The movie is dull enough to put you to sleep, and stupid enough to make you say "oh my god, why am I watching this". I considered not even bothering to watch it through to the end, though regretfully, I did. The only thing this movie did was take 2 hours of my life from me that Ill never get back.

Ok maybe Im being a little harsh. On the good side LXG had a neat concept, and some cool moments or action scenes. But that still cant save it from the outright poor quality of the rest of the film. Im sure some people enjoyed this movie, I just cant imagine who.

All together the league of extraordinary gentle men is a disaster of a movie, poorly put together, poorly scripted, with an interesting yet ultimatley obsurd plot.

Summary: A fairly decent movie
Review: Putting aside some of the poor special effects, the premise of this movie is fantastic. The bringing together of characters from what you could only call the classics of literary history is ingenious. When I watched the movie, I had no idea what it was about, only that Sean Connery was one of the actors. As the story progressed, I was amazed and excited as new characters came into play. Alan Quartermain, Tom Sawyer, Dorian Gray,
Captain Nemo, Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde,Invisible Man,Mina Harker, and Dr. Moriarty. I found myself looking and wondering who was to come next. (again I knew nothing of the story, but I knew the background of the cast of characters) Watch this movie with an open mind and put aside the minor production stuff. It was thoroughly enjoyable.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Rent it first
Review: Before you buy this DVD, rent the movie. Or save yourself a few bucks and read some of the other reviews. They're dead on ( except the people who gave it 5 stars ).

The movie has a good premise, Characters with amazing potential, horrid special effects, and a plot that looks like it was put together by someone with ADHD. The score makes you long for earplugs. In short, a terrible waste.

Summary: Great movie
Review: This is a great movie with lots of action. It is also fine as a movie for children to watch..no obscene language. Sean Connery is great in this movie.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Painfully bad!!!!
Review: There's no point addressing the individual flaws of this film. It really is one continuous flaw from start to finish. Take a group of fairly well known and established characters from literature and dumb them down into one-dimensional caricatures, throw them into a ridiculous over the top story woven together with illogic and some of the worst special effects I've seen in a long time, mix it all up until it is completely incomprehensible, then serve it up as a summer blockbuster. Beside all the obvious flaws with the story and the characters, it's just plain boring. It's not even interesting on a visceral level. It really takes skill to take all these presumably interesting characters and make a film that is as utterly disengaging as this is.

Anyone who claims to know anything about the literary material this is derived from and still claims to like it is ether lying about their knowledge of literature, or is mentally impaired. If you haven't seen it, I recommend shoving your hand into a garbage disposal instead. You'll probably find it more enjoyable.
