Summary: This movie is great!!!
Review: I saw this movie a few days after it came out in theaters and I loved it! I don't understand why people are so hostile about the movie. The only thing that was like the Matrix was all of the slow moving stuff (Which is in almost every movie nowadays). Underworld was so much better than any of the Blade movies and Kate Beckinsale is awesome as Selene. This was definately one of the best movies of the year!

Summary: Werewolves vs. Evolved Fanged Humans (not Vampires!)
Review: Once again, Ill review this movie more about the DVD edition and not by the movie itself, since most people may look at this area cuz of the DVD version not the story.

I can say that the DVD is fantastic. The menus are cool, with short clips from the movies, or animated scenes, like the main menu where it takes you on the top of buildings. I cannot say much of the special features since I only have a DVD player, not a DVD-ROM, thus, I cant access all. The commentary is fantastic though, from the director, and 2 writers... I didnt expect that one of the writers was "Raze"(or whats his name) in the movie - the black guy with very cool and deep voice. What is disappointing is the featurette, which is the same as the preview commercial of the movie - which is also in the DVD! Other than that, the quality of it all is cool.

If I am to give a say about the movie itself, its kinda interesting with the notion of a vampire vs. werewolf thing, BUT they kinda made it too Bladish or too modern that killed the mystique of both races - especially the vampires. The vampires got reflections in mirrors, and they didnt show parts when they actually killed people to feed. Its like they just showed people with fangs armed with guns. And it kinda go slow at some parts too, but I cant blame them since its the first of a trilogy, and the first movie usually takes more dragging parts to introduce the plots and characters. Other than the vampires appearing very non-vampiric and too weak(they cant win without guns, how could they have been the superior race?!), I think the movie got a deep story with a lot of twists and turns, and almost all characters have their own agendas... which makes it so interesting and making you want to know what happens on the next installment. I hope they will finally make real vampires!

Summary: Finally Vampires vs Werewolves, not done great....but good
Review: Underworld is a great looking movie that has a similar look and feel to it as films like the Matrix and the Crow. The way Kate Beckinsale (Pearl Harbor) is dressed in all leather sis even sort of a rip-off of Trinity in the Matrix. Hey though she looks great so I'm not going to complain lol. The movie is hard to follow somtimes though. It throws too much at you in one movie and it becomes to complexed to follow. Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman (Felicity) don't really have great chemestry either eventhough they are good in their roles.

I mean we know why he likes her, I mean mmmm lol. We don't know why she is willing to risk everything for him though when she hardly even knows him. Still though Kate Beckinsale surprisingly is in strong heroine form and it's impressive since she's been in basically only romance movies before this. She handles the role well even if she comes off as more of a super model with attitude than a vampire. Anyway I always wanted to see a vampires vs werewolves movie and we get that with Underworld. There's not really enough action with them verse each other though. Yes they shoot at each other but I'd rather see more of them actually fighting. It's still pretty cool though. I think the werewolves look better than most werewolves have looked. Underworld is a fun movie that you'll enjoy more if you just sit back and let the action wash over you.

Summary: underwhurled-it bites
Review: Sorry- It had promise, but didn't deliver. The premise of the two warring clans vampires and werewolves - ok. The death dealers ( from the vampire clan) are chosen to hunt the lycans ( werewolves) until there are no more. Kate Beckensale's character, Selene notices that while hunting the lycans, realizes they are actually tailing a human and not for food-- hmm..

This movie tries to be many things and ends up being a jumbled up nothing. It tries action & technology, but its half-hearted stunts are silly, claymation especially one scene where Michael(a werewolf aka the love interest) after transformation looks like a weird incredible hulk! ( like the one in the TV show in the '70's). There are scenes that look like they directly came from The Crow (scenes of roof tops in the rain) and Matrix but they don't have the effect I think they were wanting to achieve. It tries to be a love story- well, sorta. --
I wouldn't be so critical of everything else if the story had been decent.

I guess you get the idea I really didn't like it. It's a shame, I really like the vampire genre.

Summary: A Great Movie!!!!
Review: Well it is ovious that the previous reviewer did not pay attention to the movie and has no clue to the history of Vampires and Werewolves or else he would've known that werewolves have always been able to destroy vampires except for the stronger vampires. And this movie does keep with the old beliefs that werewolves hunt humans for food, the vampires do drink the blood of humans. What has happened is that they are trying to find other ways to survive without taking the blood of a human, but they do still drink it. this is a great movie and one that I am very happy to own. It has a lot of vampires, werewolves and a lot of action. If you like vampires and werewolves I think it will be well worth your time to check it out. Pay no attention to the negative reviews or the reviews of Jeff Shannon which hardly ever gets a movie review right. This is a great movie!!! So be sure to check it out

Summary: AWESOME!!!!!!!
Review: I only have one thing to say about this movie. This movie was absolutely great. It was the best movie I have seen this year. Its special effects were great, how they talked, looked, fought but the best thing about this movie was its plot. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes thriller movies. It was great.

Summary: Could Become a Cult Classic
Review: I have never been much of a vampire movie buff, but I truly enjoyed this one. Perhaps it is my own lack of imagination that has led me to believe there aren't many angles left to explore for this genre, but this movie version of Kazimieras G. Prapuolenis' comic strip "Underworld" may have just proven me wrong, having explored whatever angles were left. I've never read the comic strip, so I can't say whether or not the movie sticks with the strip; but the movie is riveting nevertheless.

Underworld had my attention from the very beginning all the way to the end. Considering the fact that this story could easily have enough material for a mini-series, the director masterfully and mercifully edits the story and footage; crafting a well-made movie without lulls or unnecessary scenes, which keeps the story moving at all times. There is a Romeo & Juliet type surprise, but it will not be evident for most of the movie.

One of the great things about this movie is that it has a dark, Gothic feel to it that pervades the cinematography of entire movie, which provides the perfect setting for a vicarious ride into the Underworld.

Now for the story: the Lycans are werewolf rebels, the Vampires are immortal overlords and there is a great deal of lamentatious history between the two of them. There are over five hundred years of animosity between the Lycans and Vampires, most of which is covered in parts of the movie's dialog or storyline.

Seline (Kate Beckinsale) is jaded and nonconforming; yet she is incredibly beautiful and soon discovers a softness underneath her hard exterior. Believing that the Lycans murdered her family when she was a child, Seline devotes herself to exterminating all Lycans from existence with extreme prejudice alongside the other members of her Lycan-killing vampire clan, the Death Dealers.

One day, she encounters a situation where a human becomes involved in the struggle. Up to this point no human has ever been made aware of the happenings in the Underworld. Having been bitten by a Lycan, the human, named Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman), is purposefully left alive. He has been targeted by the Lycans for reasons unknown to him or the vampires. But the Lycans know, thanks to the dark master of the Lycan horde, Lucian. Lucian is known only through legend and thought to have died long ago, but he is back; and he has a deviously diabolical plot to get revenge on the vampires. In particular, his undying and justifiably livid grievance is with Viktor (Bill Lighy), a brazen, arrogant, and stoic supreme Vampire overlord who has been in a medically induced slumber for two hundred years. You will find out what that grievance is in the movie.

There is also connection between the character Kraven (Shane Brolly) and Lucian that I will not divulge. But he is a power hungry, aristocratic vampire with ambitions of securing a place of power within the hierarchy vampire elders; and is willing to do whatever it takes to do it.

So how did all the contention start? Watch the movie and find out.

Although some may feel that the relationship between Seline and Michael was not explored deep enough, I think it was developed just enough; further development of their relationship would have made the film too long. Aside from that minor quip, which is not my complaint, I think most people who watch it with an open mind will enjoy the movie. For some, this has the making of a cult classic, and I think I may just be one of them (and I do not particularly like this genre).

Summary: Duh, there's going to be a sequel.
Review: This was just a hint of things (possibly) to come. Actually, lots of little hints. So quit whining about there not being enough detail or enough of a love story.

Summary: It's okay but there's nothing new here
Review: I love Vampires and Werewolves. I thought it would be great to see an original movie where they had battles. The problem with "Underworld," sadly enough, is it's lack of originality.

The "Vampire clans," the look of the vampires and the action scenes have all been done before in better movies.

The "Vampire Clans" idea has been done before in "Kindred The Embraced," "Blade," and several "White-Wolf" roleplaying games. The action sequences were unoriginal and uninspired and the clothes that the Vampires wore were just too stereotypical. Why do all the Vampires in modern films have to be covered head-to-toe in leather?

I like the movie because I love Vampires and Werewolves but I think the movie would have been a lot better if it had some more originality. This is mainly for the diehard Vampire (or Werewolf) fans. Buy this at the Hollywood Video's "Two for $20.00" sale if you are only a casual action/horror fan.
