Summary: Dead wishes make for a dead movie
Review: The movie itself is brilliant, no one can take that away. It's good despite Shelley Duvall even, and man do I ever hate her (worst part of Time Bandits, IMHO).

Where they screwed up was 1) poor video quality, they could have digitally enhanced it, 2) widescreen HELLO??? KUBRICK IS DEAD, GIVE US THE REAL THING 3) Mono sound??? get real! see #2.

Don't waste your money on this edition and lobby Warner to release the real thing! (ditto Full Metal Jacket)

Summary: Format alert!
Review: A wonderful movie, but heads up cinemaphiles: this is the pan and scan version; it doesn't appear as if a widescreen version has been released (ever) for non-theatrical showing.

Summary: Wonderful DVD when you want to see true acting!
Review: I've been a fan of "The Shining" for about three years since I first saw it and when I read that the DVD of this film was going to be fullscreen only, I was kinda ticked off. Since getting my DVD-ROM drive, I've become a die-hard widescreen advocate and I couldn't believe that this film would be released in fullscreen.

But as I read about Kubrick's style (which I previously knew nothing about), I realized that Kubrick encouraged the fullscreen-only release of this movie. You also have to remember that this film was filmed in 1.85:1, so you really aren't losing that much action by watching the fullscreen version. Anyway, to make a long story short, when I read that Kubrick OK'd the fullscreen deal, I dropped that issue.

So, I've seen "The Shining" a lot in various VHS forms and although I love the movie, I didn't really think that I needed a DVD copy of it. But what REALLY made me decide to buy it was the special feature: "Vivian Kubrick's 'The Making of The Shining.'" I saw a teaser of this behind-the-scenes special on Entertainment Tonight and just had to have more! After reading enough to confirm that the DVD version had this, I ordered it.

Let me tell you... This special feature is great! It is a candid view of the great Jack Nicholson getting ready to film in his room (brushing his teeth), memorizing lines, and getting pumped up for the famous axe-bathroom scene (it is just incredible to see him jumping up and down getting psyched up to play a whacked-out victim of The Overlook Hotel). This special also kind of shows Shelly Duvall getting chewed out by Kubrick and some other things about her that make me dislike her even more. I just thought that her performance was fake.

But that aside, this special DVD version of "The Shining" is just great and you shouldn't pass up this opportunity to own a film masterpiece like this. Enjoy and don't forget..."Heeeeeeere's Johnny!"

Summary: Flawed classic from Kubrick
Review: Kubrick took the original narrative and devised a story about the descent into madness vs. the original King emphasis on the ghost story and possession aspect. The recent television remake has its merits (particularly in the subtle believable performance of Jack's gradual "possession"), as does this theatrical version.

King reportedly doesn't care for Kubrick's cold, clinical approach to the horror story (but that's to be expected--look at every film Kubrick made--there is a level of detachment and clinical observation that reminds one that the film maker --and audience--are always observers).

While this isn't the best of adaption of King's work, it is distinctly Kubrick's own version of the same tale. What most fans of the film and book frequently miss is the subtle (and not so subtle at times) satire of horror film cliches.

The change in the ending from King's novel works well--it re establishes the sense of unpredictability in the world that informs King's book. Certainly an outstanding (if uneven )film, Kubrick manages to capture the essence of King's themes while creating a film that distinctly belonged to Kubrick himself.

Summary: Interesting.
Review: I saw this movie because I wanted to see a truly scary movie. Not only did it scare me, but it got me to think about truly amazing acting (Jack Nicholson& Shelly Duvall)When he said the famous lines "Heres Johnny!" It truly terrified me.When shelly Duvall finds that all Jack It's mind boggling to think that neither of the two actors were nominated at the acadmy awards. The reason I only am giving this movie three stars is because it such an utterly boring ending. I don't think so! And, was the kid like posessed by the devil, or just crazy? Odd movie, I'm glad I saw it, not worth watching again, unless going to watch to simply see the sheer brilliance of the acting.

Summary: A Classic Film
Review: This movie would be regarded as an undisputed masterpiece if not based on such a well-loved and well-known book. So it's not as faithful to the book as some would like. Who cares? Go and watch that plodding, uninspiring miniseries if you want a slobbering devotion to the book.

Summary: A masterpiece, and a look at the making of it..
Review: The Shinning needs no presentation, and here it is given to us with image and sound that only a DVD can bring. But the little documentary on the making of it, filmed by Kubrick's dauhgter, is a rare occasion to see the master film maker at work. The only ngative point is that it's not long enough. Kubrick is a genius, no doubt about that.

Summary: Most Expectacullar Terror Movie!
Review: The best terror movie of all times, I couldn't breath for a second. And the performance of Jack Nicholson, I think he deserves 3 Oscars for that acting. We can't see movies like that in these years, but Kubrick's masterpiece... will remain for centuries!

Summary: Kubrick's Horror Masterwork a Mediocre DVD
Review: I was hoping this DVD version of my favorite Kubrick film (one of my favorite horror films) would be presented in its original theatrical aspect ratio. No such luck. The brief "Making of The Shining" included with the DVD is a good addition (I'd seen it before) but not worth the purchase for someone who already owns "The Shining" on tape. I'll keep my ratty VHS copy and wait for a letterboxed DVD. I suggest that other Amazon.com shoppers purchase Ken Russell's "Altered States" instead.
