Rating: Summary: A good Kubrick film and a terrible DVD. Review: This is not one of Kubrick's best. Both Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duvall overact. The music? At times I felt Kubrick put this music on the soundtrack to parody film scoring in general. That said, this film is much better than King's own made-for-TV version which is just plain bad. As for the DVD, Warner Bros. should be ashamed! There is no widescreen version available and the "standard format" version is a mess with scratchy images and lousy sound. The only good Kubrick DVD is 2001. Beware of the other DVD versions of his films! Even the DVD version of Barry Lyndon is virtually ruined by a bad transfer.
Rating: Summary: No slow parts, kind of scary, all points a movie needs. Review: I rented the movie and didn't at first think too much of it but once I watched it , it was one of the best movies I've seen in a while. It has the classic Here's Johnny line in it. It's also very suspencful. I could watch it two times in a row and not be bored. It is a classic.
Rating: Summary: Thumbs down for Warner Brothers! Review: I am a big fan of Nicholson, Kubrick, King and of the film THE SHINING. So naturally I had to add it to my DVD collection. What a lousy DVD! The sound quality sucked! I had to turn my dolby digital surround system all the way up, which under normal circumstances would get myself evicted from the premises. With the volume all the way up I still had problems making out some of the text. Another Warner Brothers DVD that sucks for the same reason is BONNIE AND CLYDE which also has a nasty hum.
Rating: Summary: Vintage Kubrick Review: This is one of the greatest horror movies ever. That chase through the hedge maze is one of the most suspenful scenes ever filmed. The cinematography in that scene (and the rest of the movie) is mind boggling. Some images just stay in your head (a.k.a. the blood pouring out of the elevator). Stanley Kubrick was truely one of the greatest directors ever.
Rating: Summary: Three of entertainment's greats at their best! Review: Not only was the film cinematically well done, quite haunting, and a step ahead of it's time(in the 80's it seemed all the horror flicks were all blood and guts-not quite scary, but disgusting!) but, it showcases three of the top entertainers of the century at their best. Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King and Jack Nicholson all contributed to this masterpiece and I believe the film would not be the same minus any one of them.
Rating: Summary: passion is what drives you Review: Jack was great in that movie it is not even funny...I think he cAN ACT ALMOST AS GOOD AS I CAN
Rating: Summary: TERRIFYING! Review: This movie scared me to death. Jack Nicholson is very convincing as a madman. Just think of being stuck in an empty hotel on top of a mountain, in the middle of a snowstorm, with a crazed killer. It's everybody's worst nightmare. My brother couldn't sleep after seeing this one.
Rating: Summary: It was a great movie but was not scary enough for me. Review: The movie started off with a boring opening but it got better as it went on. I give it two stars because it was not scary enough for me. The storm of the century was much better.
Rating: Summary: The scariest thing here is the transfer Review: This full-screen version looks like the print was dragged up the mountain behind a truck. It's shocking what a lousy job Warners did here. Avoid it at all costs. Supposedly the only decent DVD trasnfer in the Kubrick collection is 2001, and that's not done by Warners. The DVD is actually a repackaged MGM DVD. Hopefully Criterion will work on Kubrick's stuff and some point and give the public a product worth paying for.
Rating: Summary: One of my favorite horror movies Review: Great acting, sound, and images. Nicholson was robbed of an Academy Award. The movie is longer than most horror flicks but only because there is so much to see and pick up. King has always been upset with this version, but Kubrick actually improved upon the book. The mini-series is a joke by comparison. One of those rare movies which can be seen repeatedly without boredom. Kubrick's perfectionism pays off!
