Summary: DVD Quality Rates a 1 Star
Review: This is one of the best horror films ever and with Stanley Kubrick at the helm I can easily say it's a masterpiece of suspense! BUT, the DVD only has the Standard version for viewing, It kills me to think I'm watching a cropped film that Kubrick created, and the transfer quality is BAD, along with a MONO soundtrack! no 5.1 or even stereo options? What Gives?

Summary: Horror at its highest potential
Review: Kubrick directs, Nicholson acts, of course its gonna be a masterpiece and it is. Never has a movie been this scary and there never will be one this good ever again. 5 stars hardly does justice to rate this film.

Summary: It still gives me chills
Review: This movie definitely ranks in my top five favorites, if not my favorite. Jack Nicholson plays the part of a lunatic perfectly, the directing is superb, Shelly Duvall is almost exactly how I pictured Wendy when I read the book, and Danny's visions make the movie. REDRUM, the blood in the elevator, and those two little girls in the hallway are scenes that still scare me just thinking about him, as is the shot where Danny is making his soundless scream. Spine-tingling. It is definitely among Stanley Kubrick's best movies, as well as probably the best horror flick ever.

Summary: Great movie,Interesting extra's
Review: The Shining is a good film by most counts and the dvd version is i must say let down badly by a second rate transfer, the sound could be better too.On the other hand the Vivian Kubrick directed 'Making Of' was a welcome delight and proved an interesting insight in to Kubrick at play.It also includes the orginal trailer which is nice..But come on!releasing bad versions of Kubrick's movies only does the man an injustice.

Summary: Dreadful DVD
Review: I had never seen such an incompetent job as that done by Warner Bros. when creating this DVD. The image is not much better than you get in an ordinary VCR, and the sound is absolutely terrible (which was a big turnoff for me, as I was looking forward to hearing the awesome piece by Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind booming in surround sound against the stunning background of the mountains around the Overlook.)

This DVD does The Shining (a truly good movie that turns a run-of-the-mill horror story into a subtle psychological-supernatural tragedy) a big disservice.

The movie is a five star one; the DVD, a one star one (and that's because I am not allowed to give no stars.)

Summary: Intense Terrifying Build-up
Review: This film is by far, one of the greatest and scariest horror movies i have ever watched (apart from the fact that i saw the uk version that is only 119 minutes so i do not know what i am missing). It is very eerie from the start, the landscape and the music is excellent. Jack's personality alteration is genuinely frightening, although slightly over-the-top. Everything from the house layout, background history, the caretaker and the things that don't wrap up (the last shot of the film, if you know what i mean) is acted out, planned, shot, and directed perfectly. Kubrick, King, and Nicholson really put effort into this. But i think one of the best characters was Danny. He made the film what it is with his friend "Tony" and his terrifying visions. In my opinion, the best transferred on to screen adaption of a Stephen King novel yet... REDRUM

Summary: One Of The Spookiest Films For Years To Come
Review: This Movie Has basically everything a movie requres in order to be a classic. It includes A great actor, Jack Nicholson, A Great Writer, Stephen King and a great director, Stanley Kubrick. What makes this movie spooky is that that the hotel is always empty, danny always sees things. Jack Nicholson looses his mind throughout the film. In the movie Nicholson tries to get the new job at the hotel. He is warned about cabin fever, which he eventually suffers through. While he becomes more ill his wife is going crazy, his son keeps imanging things that happened in the hotel in the past. The movie is very intense, one of the scariest you'll ever see for years to come.

Summary: What did you expect?
Review: This latest series of DVD Kubrick films immediately followed his death and the release of Eyes Wide Shut. Terrible sound and picture quality should be expected in a release like this that was simply done to capitalize on the death of a celebrity. The reason that 2001 is the only decent one of the series is that it was also released by MGM long before (1998) this series. In that DVD, which I own, MGM issued it in widescreen and 5.1 audio, both remastered to the Nth degree. After watching the DVD Shining, I couldn't believe my eyes. Possibly the worst DVD I have yet seen, and I have seen many. Audio hum, artifacts, pixelization, blur, full screen, mono, and no menu animation. Yikes! All of you who are disappointed in the quality of the series should have known what you were going to get from the DVD cover art. Kind of looks like something you'd do at home with scissors and a glue stick, doesn't it? Instead of buying those bargain-priced series, why not save your money and buy one or two of the higher-priced excellent quality movies? After all, you really don't like all of his movies anyway, right?

By the way, for all you who laud this movie as a great adaptation of a book: King HATED this movie with a passion.

Summary: DREADFUL DVD
Review: I agree with a previous commentator that although this is an OK film, although surely not one of Kubrick's best, the transfer to DVD is just dreadful.

Althopugh not containing a running director's commentary it does have an excellent "behind the scenes" item which shows mainly what a dreadful person Kubrick was. His treatment of Shelley Long during the making of the film, for example, is unforgivable. Even the generally unflapable Jack was taken aback by this man.

Also, for some reason unbeknownst to me, he objected to having tape or DVDs to use the widescreen transfer. What preumptiousness!

Summary: Wonderful.
Review: A priceless slice of cinema. Nicholson is dead-on (pun intended) in his portrayal of crazed father and hotel caretaker Jack Torrance. His is the best performance. A ****1/2 star movie, comin' near close to five stars. It's wonderfully eerie and gothic, and the scariest movie I've ever seen. They could have done without the naked old dead lady, but it's otherwise totally scary and a great piece of work.
