Summary: A very worthwhile film.
Review: Eerie and claustrophobic film about a caretaker who, with his wife and young son, are employed to look after a remote mansion.The scenery in this film is great, from the intimidatingly gloomy house with its labarynth of corridors to the ice-covered hedge-maze. There are also plenty of sinister, surreal scenes involving the spirits of a previous caretaker and his daughters. What really makes the film, however, is Nicholson's Oscar-worthy performance of the family man who slowly but surely becomes more irritable and unstable, and finally resorts to madness.

Summary: Another poor dvd transfer of a kubrick movie
Review: As with all the other current titles on dvd from the "kubrick collection", the video transfer is mediocre and the audio transfer is among the worst for all dvds. A poor send up of a great movie. Can't wait until they put in the effort to remaster or get a qualified engineer to do the hd transfer correctly. Definitely wait for a better version.

Summary: An eerie story culled from a long, boring novel
Review: Having suffered through King's novel, I apprecaite the movie all the more. Kubrick cuts out all the unnecessary background clutter and replaces the asinine killer topiary animals with the topiary maze. Watching Nicholson and Duvall's transformation is creepy. Kubrick doesn't depend on cheap scares and cliches. He uses the mental breakdown of his subjects to draw us in to his eerie vision.

Summary: This movie is so spectacular!
Review: Two things that drive me crazy about this movie are: 1.) Shelley Duvall's Texan accent. Though I know she's from Houston, I'm from Dallas, & we do NOT talk like that. It's exagerrated. 2.) The end chase scene (right after the African-American gentleman gets axed) where Shelley Duvall has a stunned, saucer-eyed look on her face when she catches a glimpse of something going on through an open door in the hotel room. In the room shows two men: one laying on a bed where you only see his legs & another one kneeling in front of him in a bear suit. I don't know whether to laugh or cry whenever I see this scene, because it is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. I think I am the only person in history who has even noticed this scene, because everyone I've brought it up to looks at me like I'm insane. LOL E-mail me or comment if you know what I'm talking about! P.S: Did you guys know that the hideous old naked lady in the bathtub scene was MEL GIBSON'S MOTHER? She died 10 years ago of emphysema. Food for thought. Great movie.

Summary: this goes out to all you 'fans' of the book!
Review: First of all, i must state quite simply; this is probably the greatest most epic horror movie EVER. I have never been more scared during a movie then I was during this. Sorry, but halloween, Jason, Freddy, and all their clones just dont frighten me. This is TRUE horror, suspense at it's greatest. It is IMHO Nicholson's greatest performance, he is PERFECT. And the set design is UNBELIEVABLE! Ok, now for all you people who think this movie doesn't compare to the book or whatever, first off the bat, the book hardly scared me, if anything i thought King's book was cheesy. This movie frightened me and put me in a state of awe that the book couldn't touch. OK, this movie was not supposed to be exactly like the book. If it was, King would have written the screenplay. He didn't, Kubrick wrote the screenplay. They are very different in their morals and in their beliefs of human nature. This movie is more realistic then the book. And yes, even at the beginning of the movie Jack is supposed to have that glimmer of insanity, he is an unstable person recovering from alcoholism. BUT he is still a good father and husband.There are so many themes I could touch on, but I won't even bother. Just know that this is a completely different entity then King's 'masterpiece', as all you people call it (haha).It is much superior. Kubrick truely is a genius.....

Summary: Brilliant
Review: This movie is my favourite movie ever, closely followed by Monty Pythons meaning of life. It is so amazingly eerie and haunting, with some truly terrifying scenes. The music adds to the haunting effect it gives. It keeps you awake for days Nicholson and Duvall are very good, with nicholson's performance being a classic of all time. Lloys is also very good for an actor of his age. (This is his only movie) I wont tell you the storyline as to wreck it for you if you have not already seen it. If you have read the book it is only loosely based on the book but believe me it does not detract from the movie. Hope this helps (rent it or buy it) A Classic Thanx

Summary: Excellent
Review: People are always asking me which is better, the book or the movie. For The Shining it'd be the book even though Kubrick's masterpiece is my favorite Kubrick film. It's a standout horror film in its own light. Nicholson's performance is over the top as the crazed lead. The only thing that scares me in the movie is the twins. God, I still wake up screaming.
