Rating: Summary: The Most Eerie Psychological thriller ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: This movie is great because of the atmosphere it creates. Some peolpe are bored by this film, those are the same viewers who think "Dude, where's my car" is a masterpiece. All shots in this film were thoroughly thought out and serve more than one purpose. Stanley did not just want to scare you. He wanted you to explore the Hotel as Danny did on his Big Wheel. This makes the movie much more engrossing than any teen movie of today. As for the reason this movie is not available in widescreen, as Kubrick has stated in many interviews over the years, he filmed in full screen aspect. To show this feature in wide screen you would have to crop the film thus ruining Kubricks original intention. There are not enough words to describe the eerie feeling one gets when they watch this movie without any expectations or predeterminations. This film was not meant to be a typical horror film thats not what Kubrick does, he makes a film that works on Multiple levels but challenges you to think for yourself. For some this is the hardest thing to do, and they dislike Kubricks movies because of that. For others a Kubrick film can open a door to original thinking. Kubrick was a great director and most of the actors in this film gave the performance of their careers, Including Jack Nicholson (Which is saying a lot) This movie will always be a classic for the reason that people cannot explain the reason it creeps them out, they can only admit that it does- And thats all Kubrick wanted and thats enough. Rent or buy this Film you will not be disappointed!
Rating: Summary: widescreen?? Review: Just wanted to share that 'the shining' on this dvd is presented in the full aspect ratio (fullscreen), as Stanley Kubrick intended. The film was shot at the 4:3 ratio of television screens, and matted for cinema screenings at a ratio of 1.85:1. For all home-video versions, this matting was removed, leaving the perfect full-screen image that Kubrick himself approved. Plus you can see the 143 minutes version of this film, and not the 119 minutes continental version. So nothing negative about this dvd!
Rating: Summary: best horror movie ever! Review: Some of the viewers of this fine masterpiece may not believe it is scary at all, which i think is just ridiculous considering its the best horror movie ever. I mean if this movie is not scary, what movie is? Horror movies generally are terrible and cheesy. Never has a horror movie had such great qualities that are present in The Shining. So if any of you viewers believe The Shining is not superior to all other horror movies, you need to open your eyes and just take a look at the other horror movies, THEY [stink]!!
Rating: Summary: One of the best Horror movies ever Review: This movie is better that the book in so many levels, I think Anyone who has read the book can realize that Kubrick was an unsentimental, acid Master of Cinema, and he did just perfect with this horror masterpiece, one thing that surprised me is the fact that Stephen King hates this movie cause he felt that is some way Kubrick Rape the hole plot avoiding all family relationship issues wich was the heart of his history (According to KING), since that moment Stephen King decided to supervise personally all the scrypts for movies based on his books, after that point we got a lot of horror movies with a very good begining and a stupid ending, (Do I have to mention "IT" wich was call it later "The Horror from outer space").Well looks like Kubrick. Developed a lonellines, depressive environment where the Hotel plays another character in this movie, where the poor old jack slowly makes a transition to the madness. And we have a more dramatic ending than the book with Jack running with an axe across the hotel trying to cut Danny in thousand pieces, that's entertainment. Also we have Shelley, which was more scary and effective than the hotel's ghosts, and even Jack himself. Kubrick did his Job, and left us this masterpiece that will be enjoyed forever and ever and ever.
Rating: Summary: WHY NOT WIDESCREEN? Review: "The Shining" is one of my favorite movies and is especially enjoyable late at night in the dark because of its isolated setting and Jack Nicholson's increasing mania. It is a must see for anyone who is a fan of either Kubrick or Nicholson (his finest performance other than in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"). My only displeasure at watching the film on DVD is the fullscreen format. Why can't this film be distributed in its original theatrical aspect ratio? I feel that we are missing a lot. I saw the film in a theater in 1980 and I think we are missing out on Kubrick's intent in framing each scene so eloquently. The 5.1 soundtrack is awesome, though, and ten times better than the mono video track. i highly reccomend this video, but beware: IT IS AVAILABLE IN WIDESCREEN FORMAT.
Rating: Summary: CREEPY! Review: This film may not be scary, but it has chills and thrills! Fine acting and chilling music! Kubrick is a master! Grade: A+
Rating: Summary: All Work and No Play Makes Stanley a Dull Boy Review: This was a terrific horror movie. The acting was great. Jack Nicholson did a good job as Jack Torrance. Scatman Crothers did a wonderful job as the role of Dick Hallorann. Danny Lloyd did great as Danny, especially in the "REDRUM" scene. Stanley Kubrick was the right director for this movie. I might want to see the miniseries but I think this version is better. This is one of my favorite scary movies of all time. I recommend this to everyone!!
Rating: Summary: Dim. Review: And dumb. In *The Shining*, Stanley Kubrick goes out of his way to bore us nearly to death with his intentionally dumb dialogue ("Would you like some coffee?" "Well, if YOU'RE going to have some ...", etc.), and his inexplicable deflating of any suspense inherent in the source-material by having Jack Nicholson devour scenery like Henry VIII working on a turkey leg. Though I haven't seen the "Making-Of" documentary made by Kubrick's daughter, I've been led to believe that the director forced the actors to utter the script's banalities for as many as 200 takes. Boy, it sure looks it. The movie has all the spontaneity of a glacier. It's calcified. And yet it still manages to be scatterbrained, as it changes from a story about a young child with psychic powers to a story of a madman -- who's insane from the opening shots, and ends up lurching after his family with an axe like a bad joke. (Halfway through the film, Danny's "shining" is dropped: his mom and dad start seeing the Overlook's ghosts, too.) It doesn't help that Kubrick is so impressed with his haunted hotel set, with its tacky Southwest motifs, shiny walls, and mile-long corridors. It's ornate, all right, but it doesn't much look like an actual hotel. (Nor does all the manufactured snow outside.) After more than 2 hours of the artsy photography and the deliberately mocking tone, Kubrick changes gears and tries to make a real horror movie with the climactic chase through the hotel and hedge-maze outside, but it's far too little, too late. *The Shining* is a sad case of a director with little interest in, and less aptitude for, the horror film. Yet he made one, anyway. Why?
Rating: Summary: Classic Horror Film Review: These days, all "horror" movies are just full of blood instead of actual horror. However, "The Shining" is filled with horror and it actually scared me, which is rare. It is about a writer, Jack (Jack Nicholson), who decides to live in a hotel during the winter, with just his son and wife, and no one else in the hotel. Jack's son can read minds and sense ghosts, which comes in handy because the hotel is filled with ghosts and supernatural beings. As time goes by, Jack starts to grow crazier and crazier, developing writer's block, while Jack's family is starting to fear him. During their stay at this haunted hotel, the family is constantly scared by ghosts of people that were murdered in the hotel. Also, later on, Jack tries to murder is family with an ax! I am not goin to give away any more of the film, I will let you go and rent it yourself. Any horror fan will love this one.
Rating: Summary: Jack-In-The-Box Review: Stanley Kubrick's epic The Shining is one of the twentieth century's underrated films. The acting and cinematography work together flawlessly in this monumental work of excellence. By the way, when Jack is swinging an AXE or a GOLFCLUB he swings like a Rusty Gate.
