Summary: Not as good as the original
Review: When I saw this in theaters the weekend it opened, I was expecting to see a movie that was much better than the first. I was wrong. Now don't get me wrong, the movie does have some good parts. 4 people sign up for a tour of the Black Hills area, also known as Burkitsville. They camp out at Rustin Parr's house, the same house where the 7 children were murdered. They wake up the next day with 5 hours stolen from them, and their stuff all trashed. They go back to Jeff's house to try and piece together what happened. But the terror doesn't end there. As strange markings apear on their bodies, phantasmic visions bombard their eyes, and their sanity slowly drifts away, they soon realize that when they left the woods, the didn't leave alone...

Summary: Just Plain Awful
Review: I'm going to throw my lot in with the critics who have trashed this awful film. I'm also going to agree with a local critic who wrote that this movie was one of the two worst of 2000. (The same critic praised the original BWP as the best American horror film in decades.) I've been a horror film nut since the mid-1970s, and _Pigs_ (aka _Daddy's Deadly Darling_) used to hold the top spot in my pantheon of truly bad horror films. In case you're wondering about _Pigs_, you would've had to watch Elvira's Movie Macabre series back in the 1980s to catch that one. At any rate, the reprehensible _Book of Shadows_ now moves into that spot far beyond the reach of any other film. I suppose that this Berlinger person, the director, was cynical enough to think that a music video with an 'eerie' atmosphere masquerading as a scary movie would actually impress anyone. Wrong. If I had not gone to the theater with a friend who was determined to milk that $7.50 ticket for all it was worth, I would have walked out. I too was hoping that the 'evil' presence would go ahead and dispatch the rest of the dimwit characters. Just Say No to sequels.

Summary: JOE BERLINGER'S COMMENTARY BETTER INCLUDE AN APOLOGY
Review: How dare Berlinger destroy the wonderful and imaginagtive worldof Blair Witch with this ... piece of ... . Feeding off his previous overrated documentaries, and mocking the people he allegedly supported - he manages to ruin a franchise, embarass fans of the original BWP and justify those who backlashed the amazingly refreshing and original first film. I will buy this DVD if only to hear him apoligize for Book of Shadows. (Yeah, I don't know what the Book of Shadows was either - maybe he saw an episode of 'Charmed' before pulling this movie out of his nethers.)

Summary: Can Hype Kill?
Review: Don't get me wrong this was a decent movie for all the Blair Witch fans (myself included), but I don't think that this movie lived up to the hype the first one set for itself. Granted I haven't seen it on DVD, yet, but I will. Chances are I'll buy this movie, and yet I feel a little let down. Like I said before it was a good movie, it just could have been a lot better. The movie will constantly have you guessing, which isn't always good. You may find yourself lost due to the constant jumping, which really kills some great angles they were working. If you don't mind the jumping, you pay close attantion, and have a lot of patience then you will enjoy this movie as I did. Others may want to stick with the first one though.

Summary: Nothing like the first
Review: Blair Witch took us to a place where we had never been before. It was a horror film that was all psychological. We saw nothing spooky, yet we were frightened by that. We did not have to see people being stabbed or the unwanted nudity to have a good time with a horror film. Book of Shadows forgets completely where it came from and shows us both violence and nudity. This is one of the films that can give a black eye to its original on the basis that they took what was a great idea, and ran with it. This time they went too far. The film does not make anything spooky out of the blair witch. The only thing that they try to make spooky is shots of people being stabbed, with blood splattering all over the place. This film forgot what made the first an international hit. The director who had nothing to do with the first, thought that this film would be better recieved by the audience if it were more violent and more formulaic. He was dead wrong. The only thought i had after this film was that of disbelief. I could not believe that someone would let a bad thing happen to a good movie. This film is proof that not all movies need a sequel.

Summary: Bad title - Good movie
Review: I saw the first Blair Witch and I must say, being a true horror fan, I wasn't impressed at all. When Book of Shadows was released in the theatre I went to see it with terrible precaution, but what a rush it turned out to be. The movie sets out when a bunch of fans being led by one of the locals enter the woods to see what and where happened. They spend the night near the brokendown house of the last film and when they awake in the morning they find that their equipment has been smashed and they can't remember what happened those few hours.Up till now the movie is being shown as a flashback but then the true fun starts. Not being able to recollect what happened they spend the night close nearby and strange things start to happen when every aspect of the lost night starts coming back to mind. I'm not gonna tell you the whole plot but the end is very unexpected and it's definetly worthwhile watching. The DVD version will probably have some footage of deleted scenes and a trailer.Horror fans,we can rejoice once more...

Summary: Underated Sequal
Review:

First saw this having low low expectations (a feeling warrented, and im sure shared among horror fans when the announcement was made to make a sequal to one of the most NON-sequal friendly movies EVER). Within the first ten minutes I had my foolish expectations thrown in my face as the hellride began (no hyperbole needed, the film has a very fast moving, w/ a paranoid feel to it).

A great psychological film, with a thick but respectable "figure-it-out-yourself" aspect, that lended hand to the film rather than using it as an escape. It compliments the first film well, and without using it as a crutch presents the next logical step in evolution (rather then the usual redundant sequal).

The problem of how to resolve a reality based first person perspective film/pseudo-documentary and parley it into a real movie format (third person) is solved within seconds of the opening of the film... simply enough the first was just a film, they claim, and this is the real deal (and, consequently, about the hysteria the film provided in its opening weeks).

The editing is choppy, scenes change quickly, and the viewer is left with no choice but to stay on the edge of their seat.. in this way, the movie draws you in to it. The editing can tend to be confusing, but thats what makes the second viewing all the more fun ! :) Its horror tactics mostly rely on hallucination, claustrophobia, and asphyxiation (and, of course, I applaud them on all three fronts).

The ending is solid, imho (and thats all im gonna say about that).

My only problem is that I found the acting a bit dry at times, but, of course, that might just be all part of the game the producers are playing with you throughout... a second viewing will shed light on that.

Strongly Reccomended/Two Thumbs Up

Summary: Blair, but no real scare...
Review: Okay for starters I'm a goth, so this movie appeals to me as the content is gothic and mysterious. 'Book of Shadows' is a good film, but fails to live up to the original. I f this "sequel" had been made first, it would have gotten better press. Kim Director is obviously my fave character in the film and the other characters are not too bad. The film thrills and occasionally chills and contains a bizarre ending. Blair Witch 3? Who knows? And to some, who cares? Catch this horror if you dare, but don't expect too much. Some people will say the soundtrack was better...It proves that a big-budget does not always do a film justice, but give it a try.

Summary: What did you think Hollywood would do with it??
Review: The original Blair Witch was something different, whether you liked it or not. It was also a film about film making, about the young whippersnappers like Tod Solondz or P.T. Anderson thrust into their own creations. The sequel has nothing of the subtlety, thought, originality or creepiness of the original. 5 good looking young people frolic naked in the woods investigating the events of the first film. I wound up rooting for the unseen evil to relieve my own torture of being subjected to such ridiculous [movie] as this. The original directors (who had nothing to do with this film) are off making a prequel with the first cast right now so let's just consider this an aberration and wait for the real sequel.
