Rating: Summary: Phantasm IV - Another Opinion Review: Having reaquainted myself with the original film just recently, I eagerly bought Phantasm IV Oblivion (after much searching). The film starts out very strong with Baldwin doing a great job. The film sags slightly towards the middle, but things pick up nicely during the last 20 minutes. I LOVE the ending and can't wait for the next film. All in all, I really enjoyed this film. But I view it as part of the overall Phantasm universe and casual fans may not like it as much as I do.
Rating: Summary: Phorgettable Review: PHANTASM IV: OBLIVION was the only film in the series I had not seen - and it was with great enthusiasm that I approached it, ignoring many, many terrible reviews. After all, this is PHANTASM, right? It's not supposed to make any sense, it's all nightmare imagery, and no one understands it like the real phans... Well, I consider myself a devoted fan and I hated this film.True to its predecessors, P4 picks up exactly where part III left off and goes exactly nowhere. The entire film takes place in the desert where you keep expecting Mike, the hero, to confront the Tall Man. Reggie is in hot (or cold?) pursuit in the meantime, stopping (as usual) to have a "romantic" interlude with a strange woman who isn't quite what she seems (as usual). Meanwhile, Mike is slowly moving from one dimension and time to the next, crawling toward the climax of the film that never quite happens. We're teased with possible origins of the Tall Man, but this goes absolutely nowhere. We're teased with the real story behind Jody's disappearance and transformation, but this goes absolutely nowhere. The money I spent on this DVD went absolutely nowhere. The film's end is as baffling as those that came before it, but the difference here is that there was nothing satisfying in between. PHANTASM IV delivers zero scares and zero mood. I am well aware that it was a stopgap between part III and the intended Phantasm 1999 (now Phantasm 2013), but it should have been avoided alogether. A large amount of deleted footage from the first film is used, but it seems as if the film is built around these otherwise insignificant segments instead of them contributing to an original story that had already been developed. Anyone who owns the excellent collector's edition of the original PHANTASM will have already seen this bits as extras. All in all, this is a film that phans of the series will likely purchase, but they're going to have to look really hard to find something to justify the ninety minutes of their life they'll never get back.

Rating: Summary: Not your usual Phantasm Movie Review: This movie is seems like more of a seque film than anything else. It's good to see the original cast is back again, even after all this time! That's certainly rare in any film series. Phantasm OblIVion promises to answer a lot of questions, but in reality it creates more, that's what I mean about it being more of a seque film. Kind of like Back the Future II. I thought the old clips were great. You can really appreciate them if you watch the first Phantasm right before this one as you'll recognize how they've cleverly reworked a lot of scenes, added a couple here and there, and then actually put the dialog back into some scenes that in the original were taken out and overlapped with soundtrack. Awesome ending, true Phantasm style. Don't look for closure with this movie, and don't look to the previous 2 movies. Watch the original, watch this, and you'll see it has all of the original creepiness that the previous 2 lacked and made the original so great.
Rating: Summary: The Worst Film Ever Review: If you ever get into a "What's the Worst Movie I've Ever Seen" contest with your friends, know this: Phantasm IV: Oblivion is the trump card. Nonsensical, incomprehensible, ugly, stupid, overlong, silly, dull, poorly acted, culling old footage from previous installments of the series to an extent not seen since Exorcist 2 (shudder), cheap, inexplicable, not remotely scary, and just plain bad. There is no way to enjoy this film for camp value, a la "Plan 9 From Outer Space". It just stinks in a way no movie has ever stunk. Don't talk to me about Wishmaster 2, Carnosaur III, Bats, Dee Snyder's Strangeland, Exorcist 2, Puppetmaster IV, Magnolia, Slumber Party Massacre, Battlefield Earth, Halloween III, Friday the 13th 3-D, Alligator 2, Police Academy 6, that Carrot Top movie, Microwave Massacre, Major League 2, Stone Cold, Suburban Commando, Airport, the Swarm, Black Dog, Spice World, Zorro the Gay Blade, Half Baked, Needful Things, Look Who's Talking Now, Johnny Mnemonic, Judge Dredd, Howard the Duck, Can't Stop the Music, Ishtar, the Postman, Species 2, or anything. This is it. The nadir of cinema. Angus Scrimm does Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde. All the mysteries of Phantasm I-III explained. Awful. Embarrassing. Brilliant. 5 stars.
Rating: Summary: Major Disappointment Review: I want to start off by saying that I'm a huge fan of the original film and I thought Phantasm II (not on DVD yet) was a good sequal. The original Phantasm is a classic horror movie. There is much good about Phantasm 4. The original characters are all back, including the ageless Reggie Bannister (why this guy never had more work in films is beyond me). The film was clearly shot on a limited budget, but it doesn't look cheap. It expertly uses outtake footage from the original film. I sat glued to my seat while I watched this film, usually a good sign for me. So with all that what's wrong? The script. Unbelievably weak. The movie teases us with a possible explanation for the Tall Man's origin, yet ultimately the film goes nowhere. This film explains little in the series, and what little it touches on is only vague hints. Just like Phantasm III, which I was also VERY disappointed in, this film does nothing to resolve the character's fates, with the possible exception of big brother Jody. I have no doubt that there could be a Phantasm V as this film does nothing to tie up any loose ends. Frankly, I'm getting tired of the past 2 films in the series going nowhere and not really resolving anything and I'd prefer not to see another film if it just going to be like this one. The only people who should watch this film are hardcore fans who've seen all the other films in the series.
Rating: Summary: This is not your old school Phantasm Review: As a hard core Phantasm fan, I have to say that Phantasm: Oblivion was a let down. It introduced some really interesting backstory to the mythology of the series, but it wasn't explored at all or even explained in any meaningful way. The spheres only make a brief appearance in the start of the film. Of course, all the original actors are back in this one. They're all a little older and a little balder. Before I saw this movie I had heard it was going to be the epic, final chapter in the series. This statement could not be more wrong. It was not epic and it was definatly not the last installment. I can only hope that this movie was lacking because it's giving you the info you need for the next movie, which I hope is the epic I've been waiting for.
Rating: Summary: Phantasm 4 Review: Phantasm 4 is an ok film. But unless you have seen the other 3 phantasm movies then you might be a bit confused on what's going on. This film starts right where phantasm 3 leaves off. The film isn't as face paced as the other phantasm movies, There is alot of questions answered about the Tall man and other stuff from the other films. This is def. a must see if your a big phantasm fan or if you have seen the other 3. All of the origional cast are in this one, Which is why it's worth seeing. The ending of this film almost assures a 5th film in the series will be made also...
