Rating: Summary: A Must For All Barker Fans! ***** 5 STARS. Review: This DVD will blow you away. You get the director's cut, almost a half hour of scenes the ratings board would not let into the movie, brilliant commentary through the entire film from Clive Barker himself, deleted scenes, and a great widescreen presentation of a movie that's right up there with all the Hellraiser stuff. I usually make comments only on the features within a DVD, but this one is a great detective/horror story which Barker explains in the commentary, and it's never been done before. Killer plot, great special effects, some parts to give you nightmares when you're unconscious, and a must collectible for any Barker fanatic. Don't miss out on this one! 5 STAR RATING FROM SCRAGGY'S TOMB OF HORROR DVD'S, USA.

Rating: Summary: A movie with a lot of "insider references"... Review: This is one of Clive Barker's finest. He makes reference to a world that most people don't even know about, and thus a lot of typical horror fans miss the point, and lose track with the plot. The portrayal of Nix is creepy and effective. Swann is a wonderful reluctant anti-hero, and D'amour is convincingly freaked out at times. Butterworth, Nix's disciple, spent years learning Magick- The Art- in order to craft the proper tools and work the proper spells to awaken Nix from his death-slumber. That fact alone lets you into the fact that this a world that people aren't aware of. This is a movie about magick, darkness, pain, and love. It will make your skin crawl, guaranteed. If the visuals don't do it, then the wailing of Diamonda Gallas during the end credits will make you scared! The extra 14 minutes of footage are needed to make the followers of Nix make more sense to the viewer- the DVD is much better than the VHS version. ...People with a Finger In The Pie will love it.
Rating: Summary: Spooky Barker Stuff Review: This is probably the Barker-inspired film that has received the least amount of attention. Its intelligent, well constructed and a true work of cinematic horror. I agree with alot of critics that Mr. Quantum Leap was the wrong choice to play the film's protagonist but it did not sink the picture, in my opinion. And, by all means, get the "Director's Cut" version.
Rating: Summary: 'Lord of Terrible Cinema' Review: This movie is so awful, I loved it! Possibly the worst acting ever put into a movie directed by the craziest person alive. Clive Barker is a genius and the funny feminine men made this movie work. Scott Bakula tries to be a tough cop, but the creatures of the night make him shiver. NO! The make-up and special effects were the worst I've ever seen because I wouldn't have recognized the actors with or without make-up. NO! Famke Janssen is the only good thing about this movie and she's always beautiful. Don't rent or even think about buying this movie, if so, for the goddess.
Rating: Summary: This movie was great and a must for fans of the supernatural Review: This movie was amazing. It mixed the supernatural, a mystery, and horror all in one package. Nothing is what it appears to be, and there is a surprise around each corner, so to speak.
Rating: Summary: Now You See It, Now Your Dead Review: Unlike many authors who show up in the horror section of the local bookstore, Clive Barker has always stood out as one of the few who is willing to step aside from the mainstream and experiment with the limits of horror. He understands that there is an architecture and symbolism to horror the must be there if the tale is to rise above the modern gore-fest. "Lord of Illusions' is a case in point. Using the character of Harry D'Amour (Scott Bakula), a slightly run down, hard-boiled, compulsively heroic private investigator, Barker turns his eye to the thin line between illusion and magic. D'Amour, who is no stranger to the touch of evil, finds himself witness to the torture and death of a fortuneteller and as a result is hired by Dorothea Swann (Famke Janssen) to look into a set of eerie circumstances involving her husband Phillip (Kevin O'Conner) who is a world famous illusionist. Just as Harry starts his investigation, Phillip Swann is killed horrifically in the middle of his act. Determined to follow through on his commitment to Dorothea the detective digs and discovers that he is surrounded by ghosts and shadows, full of false realities and illusions that can kill. At the heart is a Nix (Daniel Von Bergen), a cult leader and mage once killed by Phillip and now somehow working his way back into reality. Barker works the story in layers, using apparent illusions to step from one world into another. Nothing is quite what it seems, other than the ultimate nature of evil. Some of Barker's manipulation is blatant (his heavy use of cruciform and tarot images), at other times, it is the subtle repetition of a rune. The story is unnerving in its progress and eventually our imagination is even worse than what the film presents. Technically, the film is excellent. A great deal of attention is paid to the details of the settings, right down to carvings on table legs and scrawled messages on walls. Barker prefers a certain gritty reality that is far from the modern trend of antiseptic horror where everyone seems to take a shower between death scenes. He relies on only a bare minimum of special effects, preferring to use make-up and acting to get to make impact. The acting is uneven, but the action is compelling enough to get the viewer through the rough spots. I have seen far worse performances in films that have drawn more notice. The key extra is a running commentary by Barker, who directed as well as wrote the film. If you have missed this film and have a yen for a combination of diabolic horror and noir detective theme make a point of seeing it. I don't think you will be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: CLIVE BARKER IS ABSOLUTELY #1 Review: Well we all knew when Hellraiser won awards that Clive Barker would be back in action and he fails us not. Lord of Illusions is a spectacular film that reaches to the bowels where not many dare to journey. The land of magic and the cult is portrayed phenomenally and all horror fans will definitely enjoy this Barker masterpiece.
