Rating: Summary: Shoots itself in the foot with the ending! Review: Okay, this was a fairly interesting movie for most of the ways. Although the acting was worse than in your average high school play, it put up an intriguing mystery. And then- SPOILER ALERT - at the end it suddenly stops being a "documentary" and turns into a "movie", right in time for one of the most sickening murders I've ever seen. It makes no sense, and the movie's final big secret can be seen coming a mile away.Another HUGE complaint: the movie basically assumes that every viewer in the audience knows exactly what the Jersey Devil and the Pine Barrens are. How about some explanation?
Rating: Summary: A Good Thriller in the tradition of Blair Witch Project Review: I don't know if this or the Blair Witch Project came out first, so I don't know who copied off of who. A good story about filmakers who are doing a television show about the Jersey Devil. They go into the woods to do a live broadcast. Only one of them came out. He was accused of killing the three others, but the film wonders if he did it. A very interesting look at the new age of digital technology. This and the Blair Witch make a good evening of chiller fun.
Rating: Summary: The Last Broadcast Review: This had to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The acting was horrible. It was not even a little scary. On the cover of the movie it says possibly done before blair witch.Well I did not see any reason to mention that. Even it you saw blair witch and did not like it you would agree it was better than this movie. It centers around a show done on public access television and it needs to boost ratings so they do a show on the Jersey devil. What is even worse is it is so bad you can't even laugh about it . My advice rent it if you are still interested but don't waste more than 3 dollars. Buy blair witch instead.
Rating: Summary: A sharp, funny satire of "Real Television" Review: I just had the good fortune to view "The Last Broadcast" and, for the most part, was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the filmmaking and satire. The documentary was nicely paced and well structured and the the performances were as top notch as could be expected on a $900 budget. Unfortunately, there is a twist near the end (which I won't reveal) that pulls the viewer right out of the film and wraps everything up a little too nicely. Now, I wasn't expecting a "Blair Witch" level of vagueness but the "twist" was a little too pat and, honestly, not much of a shocker. Plus, I wish there had been even the slightest bit of explanation as to what the "Jersey Devil" was supposed to be. So, not a perfect film, but an interesting curio.
Rating: Summary: Interesting Concept With Execution Problems Review: I looked all over for this film after TBWP to see how similar they were. Actually, I didn't think they were similar at all after the obvious kids-in-the-woods shot on video later found stuff. TBWP went for myth-creating, while this film is all about myth-bashing, especially modern media/documentary myths. They both do a good job of what they set out to do, but "The Last Broadcast" suffered for me because of - some poor acting - the horribly monotone narration - lack of explanation of the original Jersey Devil myth (I'm not from Jersey, so I don't know it) SPOILER WARNING! - an ending which is both clever and incredibly frustrating since it throws the whole documentary approach of the rest of the film out the window. As a concept this might be a cool idea, but I had trouble with the execution here. It also opens up a lot of questions about other events in the film, especially about evidence surrounding the originally accused Jim and his mysterious demise. I guess I would rather have a solid conclusion that pays off in the same format as the rest of the film than suddenly start playing with film formats - it may be clever, but it isn't as emotionally rewarding as waiting for that final video image to develop... One final note - much has been made about the film only costing $900, and it looks it. You have to go into this one not expecting a lot of glitz and quality performances. But for most of the ride, "The Last Broadcast" is very interesting.
Rating: Summary: Just Disgusting Review: The Last Broadcast is a movie that centres around a futile plot, with stock characters. I travelled about 30 minutes just to rent this movie, and it was probably the biggest waste of time in my life. I live in Canada, and since it was only available at hollywood video, I drove down to rent it, because of all the great reviews it had. What I got was the slowest, lamest movie I could ever imagine. This movie is basically only good for people who want to watch a documentary, but, a made up documentary. This movie was NOT scary, it had no plot, and was a farce, as far as acting and storyline were concerned. It is my opinion that anyone out there, thinking that this will be another blair witch project, should just stay away. The scariest part of this movie is it's strange popularity. In short, don't rent it, buy it or look at it, you'll be disappointed for sure.
Rating: Summary: A society based in reality T.V. this movie hits home! Review: It amaizes me that people don't get The Last Broadcast. It is making such a powerful statement on our insainly based realitiy television society. Come on kids, "what you see is what you get?" The Narrative switch says it all! Hats off to filmakers finally using their heads! And if you've questioned TLB you might want to take a closer look.
Rating: Summary: This is the one to watch, not that trash called Blair Witch Review: Takes the premise 2 steps further than Blair Witch, where BWP tries to make its point of reality, TLB takes it for granted and builds something more interesting, as it exposes truths in the lie it weaves in earlier suggestions. BWP seems content to lazily let the viewer pick the lie of their choice. Not following through, it felt like the makers of the knock off movie Blair Witch, seemed like they were telling the setup to a funny joke, only to remove the punchline then have the nerve to wonder why I didn't laugh. The Last Broadcast is a better flick than BWP, as it contains a more subversive edge.
Rating: Summary: pretty weak Review: Along with all the other critcisms of this film, I had to wonder why there was absolutely NO explanation of the Jersey Devil mythology. If we knew what the Jersey Devil was/is there might have been more interest. Also, part of the effect of BWP was it's focus on the characters interaction. The "unsolved mysteries" format of this film took away from the main characters, and made the end project boring and tedious
Rating: Summary: Really Bad!! Review: I know that this movie came before the Blair Witch Project, but I also know that Blair Witch was a much better movie. One of the main selling points of this movie was that it was the first film to be shot digitally. That is just an excuse for why it looks so bad. As a film student I have shot on a digital camera and the results look much better than what we are shown here. Not only does this movie look bad, it also has horrible acting. At least Blair Witch hired real actors, not just thier friends. I have one final question for the film makers: Why is a movie that is supposed to be a mockumentary all of a sudden change that for the last shot? Seeing the killer with his camera doing his monologue over the dead body really took me out of the mood. The movie should have just ended with the revelation of the killer.
