Summary: Scary!
Review: Will scare the pants right off of you. I was on the edge of my seat through the whole movie. One hell of a ride (literally).

Summary: Best adaptation of Lovecraft on video.
Review: A logical extension of Lovecraft's "Cthulhu" stories - this is "The Music of Erich Zann" with novels instead of music. Sam Neill is an insurance investigator sent to find author Sutter Cane. Only to find he cannot leave a town which doesn't exist outside of Prochnow's stories - battling "The Old Ones". The ending is a little hokier than Lovecraft would write, but a good attempt after all. "Do you read Sutter Cane?" PS-Great tribute to Lovecraft in the person of Sutter Cane. I think he would be pleased.

Summary: Very cool
Review: I love a good horror movie, but there are so many I Know What You Did Last Summers and Urban Legends that the genre is getting stale (recent exception: the terrific Blair Witch Project). But this movie restores my hope; it has ALMOST everything a horror movie needs. (Not much ultra-gore here, but what this movie does use is much more effective. Besides, that's what my Dead Alive tape's for!) Anyway, it's got a great plot, great acting (hard to imagine Sam Neill in this role, but he's perfect for it), and it really is genuinely creepy. Oh, yeah, and the special effects are cool and bizarre without ever being cheesy. What more could I ask for? (Except for tons of zombie guts spewing out of a lawnmower. But again, Dead Alive fills that gap. Can you tell I also love that movie?)

Summary: HORRIFIC
Review: I have been watching horror movies since before I was supposed to. I can honestly say that no movie ever scared me as much as In The Mouth of Madness. Not Freddy, not Jason, none of those ever gave me nightmares. In The Mouth of Madness was the only one that ever did.

Summary: You'd be MAD not to want to own "In the Mouth of Madness"!!!
Review: John Carpenter has done it again with a truly chilling tale of an insurance claims investigator searching for a missing author, but instead is vaulted into the world of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulu mythologies. I'd recommend this film to ANYONE. If you don't own it, BUY IT. Sam Neil once again comes through with a startling performance! Jurgen Prochnow is absolutely terrifying! 3 Words....BUY IT NOW.

Summary: dark, fascinating and twisted
Review: This film is a largely unknown masterpiece made by a brilliant yet underated director and two of the best, and yes underated actors in the film world. John Carpenter has out done himself the film is dark with many mind altering twists and turns. It stars Sam Neil as a tough unbelieving insurance investigator John Trent who believes in nothing but logic and "reality" and that everyone is out to just make a buck. Hes sent by a publisher (Charlton Heston) to find the extremely successful horror writer Sutter Cane played with twisted intensity by Jurgen Prochnow. Once Trent enters the strange town of Hobb's End Cains hell quite literally breaks loose. dark, funny, and intense. Obviously Cain is based on a combination of H.P. Lovecraft and Stephenn King. A truly magnificent film for horror and for the uninitiated. A true hidden classic.

Summary: The Best Horror Movie Ever!
Review: When I saw this movie I did not know what I was getting. This movie is scary in that it makes you question reality. It is a movie that just takes you on a horrific mind adventure. It took me a bit to shake off the shock that I was in after I saw this fantastic movie. I especially enjoyed the Lovecraftian mythos interwoven into the movie. It added to its realism. I recommend this movie to all true horror/fantasy fans. You will love it!

Summary: A disturbing look in how blurred reality is
Review: John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness is the most underrated, unknown, and underappreciated horror film of the decade. It's as good as Candyman, the decade's other great horror film. ITMOM begins with John Trent (Sam Neill), an insurance investigator, who is sent to look for a missing horror author named Sutter Cane (Jurgen Prochnow). Cane's publishing company is looking for the remainder of his most recent novel, In the Mouth of Madness, so they can publish it and satisfy his raucous fans. Trent discovers that all the covers of Cane's novels are actually a map to a town named Hobb's End, the fictional town of Cane's stories. From there on Trent must figure out what is really going on and determine his own sanity.

Neill is great as the insurance investigator and Carpenter's direction is masterful, at least for most of the film. While the conclusion isn't horrible, it pales in comparison to the frightening first hour of the film. The film begins with a haunted town story then turns into a near absurd (absurdity sort of helps the film) ending dealing with the apocalypse. But the message the film sends is powerful and clear, reality is what we say is real, but what we say is insane and impossible could easily be the truth if enough of us believe in it. Despite how far-fetched any of this may sound, everything has its own truth.
