Rating: Summary: Carpenter's most entertaining film to date. Review: Sam Neill is John Trent, an insurance investigator sent to search for a missing horror author. He eventually discovers that the writer's latest piece of fiction may actually be coming to life. Mind-bending horror/thriller in the style of H.P. Lovecraft is one of John Carpenter's best films to date. It's scary, intelligent, and quite a bit of fun. The special effects are great and the creepy score from Carpenter is one of the few of his that doesn't simply repeat itself to death. Loses some momentum in the last ten minutes, but goes out with a real bang. Sam Neill is terrific, as usual. **** 1/2 out of *****
Rating: Summary: pretty freaky! Review: i was really impressed by this film. im a big john carpenter fan i must admit (i even liked vampires :O), but when i saw the previews for this awhile back i thought it was just goin to be another cheap horror flick. but i was so wrong! john carpenter pulls it off again and really creates an atmosphere, impressive camerawork to boot. the soundtrack i thought wasnt as good as it couldve been, but thats a detail. sam neil is simply awesome in this film! he's got a great use of eyes and makes his lines sound better than they actually are. the whole premise of this film is fairly original i thought and its pulled off with polish and charm. great work once again, john carpenter.
Rating: Summary: Good for one viewing Review: I always have high expectation on horror movies as I expect to be able to view it multiple times. 'In the mouth of madness' works fine for first viewing, but there's no point on keeping the movie for multiple viewing. Rent it before you buy it.
Rating: Summary: Scary Review: John Carpenters In the Mouth of Madness is one of those few horror movies that really gets under your skin, it is not your average horror movie. The plot is about a free-lance insurance investigator John Trent(Neill) that gets hired by a publisher(look for Charlton Heston as the mannager), to find their best selling horror author Sutter Cane(Prochnow) that mysteriously disapeared. To aid him the publisher sends his yuppie-editor along with Trent. They end up in Canes fictional town of Hobbs End, and from there the plot really starts to pick up speed. Alot of the plot is loosely based on H.P. Lovecrafts Ctulhu mythos and borrows alot from Lovecrafts books and mythology without being a true mythos-story. When you are done watching the movie you really sit back with a feeling of "What really happened?", because nothing seems to be certain in this movie. That said, I will say that this is one of the strongest horror movies of all times and one of the few that really mannages to scare without being (unintentionaly) funny.
Rating: Summary: Not Your Typical Horror Flick Review: First of all, let me say, I am not a fan of horror movies. They rarely succeed in either scaring me, entertaining me, or making me think. As my eyes trace the bad special effects, cheesy costumes, and overuse of blood and gore, I often find myself both disgusted and bored. So, when my boyfriend brought over this video, I assumed it would be just another addition to the long list of bad movies he's shown me.To my delight, I was mistaken. This is not your typical horror flick. I found myself invested in the plot line and the characters. I discovered that I was thinking and enjoying myself. I even, dare I say, may have been a little frightened. The concept of the movie is interesting and very well excecuted. Admittedly, this movie does encorperate some of the typical stunts that are used in your average horror flick (demonic children, ax murderes, monsters, possesion, etc.) However, this is excusable, as there is a credibility established from the beginning of the movie, which helps to portray the overall theme of the film: Where does the line between fantasy and reality truely lie? The viewer, like the protagonist, is naturally sceptical of the bizzare circumstances. As the lead character tells himself, "This is just a ploy," we tell ourselves, "This is just a movie." But, as the film progresses, both of us begin to question reality. This connection allows the viewer feel as if they are not watching the movie, but actually experiencing it. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in a film that is both frightening and thought-provoking, esspecially if you're an H.P. Lovecraft fan.
Rating: Summary: Lovecraft would be proud. Review: This movie takes alot of the best aspects of Lovecrafts stories and puts them on film. If your a fan of H.P. Lovecraft, this is the film for you. If your not familiar with Lovecraft, or not a big fan of horror films, the movie is good but not great. (My wife said it was OK)...
Rating: Summary: Awesome...Just Awesome Review: Phenominal movie. Its what every horror flick should be like, a mental masterpiece
Rating: Summary: where does reality begin Review: This movie had me scared beyond belief. I mean i caught myself covering my eyes every few minutes. from start to finish a non stop thrill ride which leaves you questioning your own reality. Is this reality or not? AN a plus movie from an a plus directer . once you enter the mouth of madness theres no coming back chris hammond
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Ride Review: I first saw this movie when it came out on video and I must say that it was one of the most original and downright scary movies I'd seen in a long time. As a longtime horror fan I was appreciative of the lack of "comedy" that most current horror movies seem to have teeming from them, granted there are a few clever lines here and there but it pretty much sticks to the formula (such as it is) and creates an experience that really plays with the viewers head. I've since seen the movie over 10 times and each time see something I hadn't seen before. An overall excellent movie and a must for all horror officiando's, by the way I loved the ending, regardless of what anyone says. Sam Neill does an amazing job as John Trent and all of the supporting cast do a great job as well. An all time fav.
Rating: Summary: Lived any good books lately? Review: I saw this movie when it first came out on video and was terrified. Since then I must have rented it about ten times. John Carpenter does an excellent job in this movie, keeping you scared out of your wits. Some of the movie does have a Lovecraftian feel to it and I say that's what gives it the eerie feel it has. This movie shocks you again and again. From a maze-like town, to an old man on a bicycle, or a bunch of kids chasing a dog hoping for a quick bite, this movie doesn't stop chilling you to the bone until the very end.
