Rating: Summary: Scary! Review: Yes this is a scary movie even if it was a hoax. Just like The Blair Witch, the producers and the hoaxers had to step foward and confess! That's so stupid. Then the instant they revealed people started to give it bad reviews. The same for The Blair Witch, started getting bad reviews, because people were thought it was real and went out into the woods to find the remains of the three kids who were "supposedly killed." This was scary, started to get bad reviews after it was exposed, but then again every film they claims to be based on a true story, then exposed as a hoax usually starts getting bad reviews. I've shown this film to 20 of my friends, and we all got scared. The only part that was actually based on a true story was the beggining were that guy killed his entire family. The rest was made up so that the man who killed these people could plead insanity. That is the real Amityville Horror. But some of these "hauntings" in this movie were documented in other cases, not at amityville. The cold spots, doors slaming, vioces, and even things peeking at you from a window, have alled been reported by other people, but it wasn't in amityville. Those who appreciated The Exorcist, The Changeling, and The Haunting will love this film. It is great, and after you view come over here and back me up with positive reviews. Oh yeah see the DVD version. It is the best!
Rating: Summary: Settle Down ... Debunkers ! ! ! Review: I just love how almost every person who wrote a review for this film seems to think they are an authority on the true Amityville story. LOL! This film, and the book from which it was based on, are American Classics ... and always will be. No amount of debunking or denouncing the actual events from which this story was written will ever change that. Get over it, people! The book was by far more frightening than the film, however, the house used for the shoot, and Lalo Schifrin's brilliant score are the real stars, in my opinion. For those who have been watching any VHS copy, or even the laserdisc for the past 15-years, owe it to themselves to pick up the DVD. MGM did a very impressive job with the digital remastering of the film, and the tiniest details which were lost in the analog transfer's of the past are now crystal clear. I was a bit disappointed that there were no alternate camera angles, or deleted scenes added to the disc, which would have been cool to see, but having a widescreen version and the overall quality pretty much makes up for it. For me, the story is still every bit as frightening and intriguing to this very day as it was 25-years ago, and it's even more enjoyable in all it's restored widescreen glory ... despite what the "experts" have to say about it.
Rating: Summary: They are Wrong! Review: The people that stated that this was cheesy and hoakey, say that because they don't want to believe something like this can happen. This did happen. I reserched it after I saw the movie. The special effects aren't dazziling, but they were not suppose to be. This movie told a story. A rather unsettling story, but most people think "haunted house movie, let's laugh at it" and that is being rather narrow minded. This is better than most haunted house movies. This is good, rent it, then buy it. Oh by the way, this was stated as the 15th scariest film of all time!!!
Rating: Summary: Takes Itself Too Seriously Review: The Amityville Horror has a few creepy moments, but not much gore and no real drama. It claims to be based on a true story [hoax], which is laughable. That claim sets the tone for the whole production, which tries too hard to be serious and in the end comes across as phony. The problem with horror movies since Scream, of course, is that they don't take themselves seriously at all. I love the classic horror movies, and while Amityville makes a nice try at being one, it isn't.
Rating: Summary: Wow! Review: ...this was a scary movie. So what if it was a hoax, it could still happen. Even fantasy horror can be scary sometimes. This is a good ghost movie. Not as good as The Haugnting (1963) or The Changeling, but it is up there with he greats. If nothing in this movie scares you, the eyes will. That part completely unerved me and solidified this one as one of my all time favorite horror movies. If you are thinking of buying this, get it, also check out The Evil Dead, The Exorcist, Salem's Lot, Pet Sematary, Halooween, Poltergeist, Rose Red, and The Changeling. This is a great scary movie, even if it was a hoax. Ignore the star rating, I rented The Entity, its' rating was 4.5 Stars, and it [was bad]!
Rating: Summary: creepy Review: I keep my reviews short and blunt. This is a good haunted house movie. Defimnitly in the top 5 of haunted house movies made. And I've seen all of them. The house itself is very creepy and makes this movie. Maybe not the best but you can't go wrong, if your a fan of these type of movies.
Rating: Summary: The Amityville Horror Review: The House is really scary but the acting is all wrong it locked to much like TV & the sound is bad to i just hope the remake will be better
Rating: Summary: It isn't even a matter of opinion! Review: Empirically, this movie [stinks]. The book itself turned out to be a hoax, but even still, had the movie simply stuck to the book, it would have been all it was ever meant to be -- scary. But there are so many red herrings, so many scenes where something terrifying turns out to be just a spouse walking into the room or the wind blowing, that impatience soon turns to exasperation. People actually thought this movie was frightening? Now THAT'S frightening!
Rating: Summary: For being a total fraud it is ok Review: The incidents never happened and the family fabricated the entire story. Still and all it is a pretty decent movie with some scare factor. James Brolin is very convincing as a man loosing his mind and these scenes are quite disturbing. However, the children are horrible actors and the wife is also quite unconvincing. Overall a mediocre movie.
Rating: Summary: Could be better, but still good! Review: Very loosely based on the book The Amityville Horror, this film documents the "true" account of an innocent family terrorized by unwanted "things" in which they share there home. When I say it could be better, I mean the story should have been based more on the book, because I was spooked by the book. To be honest, I find parts of this film to be slow-moving, but that doesn't mean it's not good- it's better than most horror films!
