Summary: BAD BOOK, BAD MOVIE
Review: Chicago Tribune reviewer Roger Ebert wonders why Dreamcatcher starts off well and ends so poorly. Not even the wonderful Morgan Freeman, he says, can redeem the second half. The reason is simple. The second half of King's novel is atrocious--overlong, overwrought, and ultimately unsatisfying. Bad novel, bad movie. Skip both.

Summary: Vintage King
Review: This book confirms what I've always thought about King...he can write anything. I've always thought he was one of the most descriptive writers I've ever read and had always thought anything he wrote that was turned into a film would be [bad]. But then there was Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and Misery...so there goes that theory. The book started out slow for me and then spun out of control. There are the common King themes in this book like childhood friends (I.E. It Stand By Me etc...) but this one takes some interesting twists and turns. Tomorrow, the movie opens...and it will be interesting to see what Mr. Big Chill Kasdan does with it!

Summary: read the book, saw the trailer
Review: The book is awesome. I am a Stephen King fan from way back in "THE STAND" days. His writings and movies started to become boring and trite in the last couple of years. This book was wonderful like his old self. The trailer looks exactly like I imagined when reading the book. Also if you read the book it was written as a screenplay with the sections numbered and broken up so the movie should be great just like the book. I saw in the movie trailer the characters like Jonesy and Dudits. They are just like I pictured them. Go see this movie this weekend I am!

Summary: Strong Parts, Entertaining Film
Review: Overall, the creators of this film did a good job: the story moves along quickly, the characters possess depth and believability, and the cinematography and directing make for a very clean product. Moreover, there were scenes that, because of the creativity, effects, and acting, got me to compare them to some of the best horror scenes in filmatic history. The bathroom scene especially, made me think of similarities with Jack Nicholson's "Here's Johnny Scene" and Hitchcock's shower scene. Tense, tense stuff. My complaints of the film pertain to it's depiction of military and alien (E.T.) operations, the way they do things. In both cases, the creators of the film seriously underestimate the abilities of these entities to accomplish their goals. Depicting the military, we see commanders who are mentally unstable and psychotic as well and soldiers ignoring chain of command. With the aliens we see an advanced species unable to accomplish what appears to be the simplest of objectives (I won't ruin it) and getting wiped out real easy like. All together, good and bad, the film rates a pretty good because the positives were pretty striking. I just wish there had been more of them. I would recommend this film to horror or Stephen King buffs, as well as aficianados of sci-fi and action. Thank you. Roland Petalver

Summary: Mostly Sucked
Review: I'll start with what this movie did right, since that will take the least time. What Dreamcatcher does right is present us with a small handfull of interesting characters, and it provides interesting relationships between said characters. It even gives us a sometimes entertaining story and conflict in which the characters are engaged. Now that that's said, we'll move on to the bad points. For anyone not already familiar with the book, the story does nothing to prepare us for the fact that aliens are responsible for the events that are occurring. This makes the reveal a jarring, incongruous experience, which is so badly contrived as to be comical. Just because King leads us to believe that this is a formulaic supernatural 'King' story, and then runs completely counter to that doesn't mean the story is any good; it just means it has a gimmick. That gimmick is not enough to carry the weight of the characters or the potential the story has, and as a result, fails utterly. The next thing (not sequentially in the movie) this film does wrong is provide the audience with possibly the longest running fart joke in the history of cinema. Audiences that delighted in The Green Mile will find this tiresome very quickly, although fans of Scary Movie will probably love it. Next, the movie provides us with a gratuitous gross-out scene in the bathroom, where the fart joke becomes terminal. I found myself quickly bored and inured to the sight of the gore, which is one of the things that King always does wrong; going for the gross-out. The buzz about this scene being compared to the Shower Scene in Psycho is apt on one level: the shower scene made me afraid to take showers, and the bathroom scene made me afraid to watch any more Stephen King movies. Overall, the movie is not nearly so interested with a well-crafted storyline as it is interested in rapidly hitting major plot points and moving on before anyone has time to react. This leaves us with the impression that we have followed the story, but it's only on a surface level. ... All of these questions may be answered in the book, and that's exactly who I would recommend this movie to: fans of the book.

Summary: What were they thinking?
Review: Let's start with the director, Lawrence Kasden (The Big Chill, Grand Canyon). Here's someone who it's obvious that many folks in Hollywood respect, otherwise, why would all of these talented actors agree to be a part of this garbage? Needless to say, but some of these actors will be looking for new agents after "Dreamcatcher." Seems Goldman (who wrote the screenplay) has been going downhill for years. The man who wrote the book "Marathon Man" (which starred Dustin Hoffman & Laurence Olivier in the movie), probably did the best he could, considering the material. And the acting? How did these guys even come to hear about this? Weren't there better parts out there for them? It's not like they're hard up for work. Damian Lewis should be getting prime material after his incredible work in "Band of Brothers," not [weak] movies like this. Morgan Freeman? It's hit & miss with this guy. It's hard to believe that this is the same guy that said yes to "Unforgiven" and "Se7en". Tom Sizemore? Donnie Wahlberg? C'mon guys, you can make better career decisions than this. I mean, Donnie... you could've spent your time better recording a new NKOTB album. You're a great actor man... don't sink to this level. Not even your talent can save a film this bad. The aliens/worms looked like something you might see on some UPN Movie Of The Week. Not scary at all. My advice? Stay home and rent a movie...

Summary: Looks excellent!
Review: I am presently re-reading the novel by Stephen King, which I found to be an exciting and inventive story, but I wonder exactly how the filmmakers will adapt the sprawling plotline of the book to film. I approve of the fact that all of the characters' names are correct, because an inconsistency in this area often mirrors the movie's diversion from the novel's plot. I noticed that many lines had been changed and some scenes shortened and ultimately forgotten, but as a whole, I believe this movie will stand as perhaps the best adaptation of a Stephen King book.

Summary: Finally, Stephen King represented
Review: Alright first of all I have to admit, I am a huge Stephen King fan, I absolutely love the way the man writes, he just seems to draw me in like no other author can do. However when it comes to his work being presented on the screen I am usually not impressed (except for The Shining of course) However I enjoyed Dreamcatcher, now unlike other reviewers I will not be posting spoilers, I find the story to be very interesting, compelling and at time scary. I think if you like a good sci-fi thriller with a lot of comedy, if you like Stephen King, I suggest you definitely check this movie out, you, in my opinion, will not be disappointed However I don't really think this movie is too scary, as a matter of fact most of the time I was laughing out loud, not because the movie is bad but because there is some hilarious dialogue in the movie, especially Jason Lee as "Beaver" is phenomenal, granted you have to like his sort of humour but if you do you are in for a treat (think a tamer version of Jay and Silent Bob as the character he represents)

Review: BORING!!! This movie had a wonderful concept, and managed to scare audiences every scene, but there wasn't any action or scares in the first hour. For this Stephen King novel's adaptation, they had to have the best actors, best stuntpeople and the best writers. It's very thrilling and scary, but, I'm saying as a piece of educated advice: Don't Waste your time. **1/2 out of 4
