Rating: Summary: Frightening Eerieness Review: Before there was "Lord of the Rings," there was "The Frighteners." Peter Jackson's under-rated supernatural black comedy. The movie stars Michael J. Fox (in his best performance since "Back to the Future") as Frank Bannister, a troubled man who can see things normal people can't see. A para-normal psychologist of sorts, Frank has just seen something new he has never seen before. After corrupting people for money by using his ghost friends, Frank stumbled upon a different problem. Numbers engraved into people's foreheads were a sign of death coming. The figure in the black cloak couldn't be stopped and it was going to get the woman Frank was falling in love with. In his past, Frank's wife had been murdered and she had a number carved into her face. Vomit time! And it was happening all over again with the supernatural world. Frank's ghoulie friends were destroyed again and a sneaky, foolish agent man was getting in Frank's way. The movie is fast and is extremely fun. You may not like the subject matter, but Michael J. Fox is great. The special effects are cool and Peter Jackson did a great job of directing. Forget the "Lord of the Rings," it's all about the reaper. "Don't fear the reaper, c'mon baby!"
Rating: Summary: Pre-Lord of the Rings Peter Jackson directed this.... Review: Pre-Lord of the Rings Peter Jackson directed this special effects-laden thriller-comedy starring Michael J. Fox as a con artist who fakes poltergeist attacks with his two dead buddies. Imaginative and funny at times, The Frighteners is a fantastic film with some creepy FX. Michael J. Fox is great as conman Frank Bannister, and the suppourting cast are as excellent as they are eccentric. Also director Jackson shows what a good sport he is with a well-done cameo. The main villian, the 'soul collector' (who goes around offing people with a creepy modus operandi) is remarkably similar to the ringwaiths in LOTR. The score is suitably spooky, fitting in well with the tone. The film is not for everyone however, there are some very chilling moments that may not sit too well with the added humour for some audiences. But hey, it's fun, and really entertaining. A fascinating and off-beat film from the director of Lord of the Rings.
Rating: Summary: A nail-biter that makes you laugh Review: I've never understood why this movie did so poorly at the box office but this is one of the most underappreciated films I've ever seen. The movie begins with a lot of humor and only an undertone of menace. As it progresses, the danger level and intensity gradually get cranked up to major proportions.Michael J Fox is great but the movie is filled with characters that are unique, three dimensional, and well acted. About the only reservations I have in recommending this movie universally is if you don't like getting scared or if you don't like any humor mixed in with your horror then you probably should look elsewhere. For anyone else, enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Haley Osment Isn't The Only One That Can See Dead People Review: And I thought "The Sixth Sense" was scary! But boy was I wrong! "The Frighteners" is a truely more gory and exciting wild ride from Peter Jackson. And with Michael J. Fox, it makes it even better. This film as some pretty intense special effects in it that will blow your mind away.... In "The Frighteners," we meet this guy Frank Bannister (Michael J. Fox) who believes in death for a living and tries getting rid of the distrubing poltriguiest. There's just something about this movie that chilled my bones with the wonderful perfomance by these actors. If it weren't for Robert Zemeckis and Peter Jackson, this film wouldn't be as heart pounding, edge-of-your-seat excitment! Wonderfully well done!
Rating: Summary: GOOD HOROR MOVIE WITH A GOOD ACTOR Review: Michael J. Fox is great in this movie. He plays a con-artist phycic investegator who sees ghosts. This is horor and also comedy because he has spirits that live in his unfinished house. The thing he must do is stop a reaper ghost from killing people because he is the only one that can see him. If your like FOX than you'll like this,
Rating: Summary: An Over-looked Wierdo. Review: Michael J. Fox stars in this film as Frank Bannister, a ghostbusting con who actually can see ghosts. He is aided in his job by three ghosts who also happen to be his roommates in his unfinished house. Things go start to go terribly wrong for Frank when a mysterious evil spirit shows up dressed as death and starts killing people. Not only can Frank see the spirit, but he also sees numbers on the foreheads of those about to be killed and he always happens to be around right at the time of the victims death. You know Frank isn't a killer. Or is he? This is an often over-looked film that was released in the summer of 1996. It has a lot of things going for it: it stars Michael J. Fox, is directed by Peter Jackson (of LORD OF THE RINGS fame), has some awesome special effects, and is a really well written movie. However, THE FRIGHTENERS is not easly categorized. It is a cross between romantic comedy/horror thriller. A lot of people don't like it when "genres" are mixed, even if it is done well. THE FRIGHTENERS is done well, but it is a strange hybrid and not all mixtures are for everyone. Still, Michael J. Fox is great and if anyone is interesting in seeing why Peter Jackson was so good at making LORD OF THE RINGS, this film illustrates why.
Rating: Summary: THE FRIGHTENERS Review: THE FRIGHTENERS is a wild, well-made, horror comedy that has alot of good special effects. In the small town of Fairwater, healthy people are dying from 'heart attacks,' but they are actually being murdered by an evil spirit known as The Grim Reaper. The only person in town who could possibly stop The Reaper is Frank Bannister, a psychic investigator who has the ability to see dead spirits. THE FRIGHTENERS is a good movie but it's also very underrated and not that many people have seen it, so I suggest you go out and pick it up now!
Rating: Summary: Overlooked Actor Review: All I will say is that Jeffrey Combs made this movie worth watching again and buying on DVD.
Rating: Summary: A GERAT HORROR/FUNNY MOVIE Review: THIS MOVIE IS SO AWSOME. I USUALLY HATE HORROR MOVIES BUT I CAN WATCH THIS MOVIE WITHOUT BEING SCARD. I REMBER SETTING IN MY DEN WITH MY MOM AND DAD WHEN I WAS ABOUT 8 OR 9 AND SEEING THIS ONE PART IN THE MOVIE WHICH I THINK IS FUNNY: FRANK BANNESTER(FOX) IS IN THIS GRAVEYARD WITH A GHOST WHO IS AT HIS OWN FURNAL. I REMBER SEEING THE GHOST NAME:RAY LINSKY BEING BURRIED "ALIVE" WHEN HE IS DEAD IN HIS OWN GRAVE WHILE FRANK WATCHES. FINALLY FRANK GRABS HIM AND GETS HIM OUT. MY MOM CHANGED THE CHANNEL BECAUSE SHE THOUGHT I WOULD GET SCARD. SO ABOUT 3 OR 4 YEARS AFTER I SAW THAT PART I SAW THE MOVIE ON TV AND WATCHED IT AND LOVED IT SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH. I HAD A SLEEP-OVER AND I RENTED THIS MOVIE ALL MY FRIENDS WERE AFRAIDE TO WATCH IT BUT THEY GOT INTO IT BUT ON SOME PARTS WE ALL SCREAMED. AT THE END OF THE MOVIE ALL THE GIRLS LOVED IT. NOW THEY KEEP TELLING ME IT WAS THE BEST MOVIE. AND IN THE MORNING WE ALL PUT NUMBERS ON OUR HEADS AND WENT RUNNING AROUND THE HOUSE. IF YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE A SLEEP-OVER RENT THIS MOVIE!
