Rating: Summary: CGI Horror Review: House on Haunted Hill has a very interesting premise and a very likeable cast but somehow manages to fall flat despite all its truly horrific intentions. Problem lies with the direction. With the only other major film to the directors credit, Universal Soldier : The Return, I rest my case. Hill goes completely overboard on the CGI towards the end much like "The Haunting" and what we are left with is a laughable attempt at recreating the horror and tension of the original 1950's version. Good for a laugh or two but a scare, I think youll be more scared in Scooby Doo's mysteries on cartoon network.
Rating: Summary: Give this movie a chance... Review: Though other horror films released in the past five years (Scream, etc.) have only served to spoof horror and not produce it, I urge you to be open minded to House on Haunted Hill. Combining truly nasty imagery and seductive cinematography, this film draws you into a world of evil and terror. Admittedly, the acting is not supurb, and the ending could be stronger, but the overall feel of the film is delightfully frightening. The DVD offers a great comparison/contrast with the original, as well as insightful comments from the director, and cut scenes. Those who appreciate the surrealism of films like Candyman and Nightbreed should also see the potential of House on Haunted Hill. A wonderful mean spirit runs through HOHH, making it fun in a wicked sort of way.
Rating: Summary: Definitely worth a look...at Jeffrey Combs Review: Jeffrey Combs is underused here (like he is in seemingly every movie that he is in), but Director William Malone utilizes a great score to keeps things moving at a crisp pace, to hide the warts in the plot (like why anyone in their right mind would go downstairs). This is a vast improvement over the stinkeroo of an original. Not real scary, but if they had used more of Jeffrey Combs as the mad doctor, they really could have had something special.Bonus points for the DVD extras, which are excellent. Why would anyone use VHS at this day and age? Go DVD and see this movie in all of its glory.
Rating: Summary: Disapointing Review: This movie wasnt very good. I expected it to be better than The Haunting but it was the same. The acting and script was bad and the charcters were anoying. And the same stupid humor that they put in Horror movies. Why cant they stick with it being serious instead of added these stupid comic lines. Like the line at the end " I was Adopted" what a stupid line. I wish they would stick with hainted house movies like The Amityville Horror now thats a movie with stylke and orginal horror. dont waste your time with this movie its boring and not that scary.
Rating: Summary: House on Haunted Hill Review Review: Okay, overall i think this movie was okay. I mean they totally could have made it better. Bridgette Wilson is one of my favorite actresses and seeing her face on the cover 1st made me believe she was in it alot. But hello? She was in it for like 5 min. then got cut up into fish sticks. If your a blonde- advice:run! Most of it was cheesy, but definitly spooky! The ghost gave me nightmares. So if you hate blondes, love cheesy movies and being scared- this is for you!
Rating: Summary: Good Fright, Good Night. Review: This movie is a typical example of an excellent piece of cinema. It's got the suspense, the thrills and the horror which every good horror-movie should have. Although I give this movie five stars, there was one aspect of the movie that I wouldn't mind changing, and that's the end. Not to spoil it for you, but I can tell you that I do prefer people being chopped up and gored in funny ways. NOT to be killed in the way they are at the end of the movie. Otherwise, great piece.
Rating: Summary: A Very Scary Movie Review: The first time I saw this movie in theatres I left halfway through it. It is definitely scary, but is interesting enough to have me come back to see the rest. My favorite part of this movie is the performance by Famke Janssen. She executed every line excellently and was also funny. Ali Larter and Taye Diggs were also good. The most surprising performance was by Chris Kataan from SNL. He plays the cowardly owner of the house and was so different than any other character he had ever portrayed on SNL. If you like a good scare, you'll love "The House on Haunted Hill".
Rating: Summary: Maybe Worth A Rental Review: Making a good haunted house film is very difficult. For me, at least, it is very difficult since I compare everyone I see to the classic The Innocents. The newly updated version of House on Haunted Hill is no classic. My main problem with this film is that it is too unpredictable! I know, I know, that sounds crazy, right? Isn't what is wrong with films today is that they are all carbon copies and you already know the plot as soon as you sit down? Yes, but in this film they go the opposite direction to an extreme. The plot is constantly changing back and forth, back and forth. There are twists every two minutes, and after awhile they lose their effect and become annoying. I wanted some good old fashioned scares, and all I got was an excercise in plot twists. Needless to say, I was not amused. All the performaces are stoic and not very entertaining at all. Geoffery Rush, what were you thinking? This film ends up being like a good carnival haunted house. You are moderately entertained, never scared, and at the end of the ride you can't wait to get off.
Rating: Summary: See the Vincent Price version Review: This movie was downright HORRIBLE! It wasn't scary. They thought they could rely on the blood and gore to make this a good movie. Guess What? It didn't work. The original with Vincent Price is so much better than this piece of garbage they call a movie!
Rating: Summary: Don't pick at things that aren't true Review: I don't mean to be abusive, but there seem to be a lot of people here who pick holes in the fact that 5 people were chosen to come to the asylum, apparently for no reason - if you had actually been paying any attention to the film, you were told very clearly that the five were the descendants of people who had originally worked in the place and survived the fire, but you weren't watching the film, so why bother listening to your reviews which say it's a waste of time? I thought it was creepy, scarey in the right places, funny in the right places, and while it's not going to test your brain (it's not MEANT to!) it's a great film to just sit back and enjoy.
