Review: John Carpenter has never matched the level of creative genius he reached in this 1982 movie with Kurt Russel. Easily one of the best horror movies ever made, the special effects astound me even after 20 years.

Summary: John Carpenter Creates Another Great Movie...
Review: ...and you won't want to miss a beat of this update to the 1951 version of the movie. While featuring some convincing performances, especially from Kurt Russell, the movie also draws strength from its quiet gruesome make-up and special effects. Indeed, this movie can draw some real chills from you.A group of scientists in Antarctica explore a site upon which a supposed ufo crashed long ago. When they get there, they warm things up a little bit, and awaken "the thing", and from there the terror begins. As each infected being (or even animal - check out the horrific dog-splitting scene in the movie) becomes "the thing", the person it attacks or envelops becomes it as well. Now with this crazed creature, trust is a broken issue among the scientists, as each one fights for himself to the bitter end. While not the scariest horror movie by any means, this film more than has the ability to scare you on its own merits. Be warned: once you have watched THE THING, you may never look at movies like this the same way again. Chills, thrills, and some spirited performances, THE THING is perfect for a horror movie marathon...be warned!

Summary: The best Sci-fi horror flick on DVD.
Review: John Carpenter directs this stunning and startling shocker from 1982, it's set in Antartica, a group of male researchers find a alien spaceship buried in the ice for a thousand years now discover that a alien parasite that can infect a person and transform into a hideous monster has been unleashed and some of the members are infected, will any one of them survive? A highly entertaining, unique and great mixture of science fiction and horror with tons of great 80's special effects, heavy gore, cool monsters and transformation effects by Rob Bottin, great acting, Kurt Russell kicking alien ... and good script too, it's one of my all time faves. The DVD: Great transfer with excellent sound, great extras like Trailer, deleted scene, outtakes, documentary, Storyboards and more. So if your a fan of Science Fiction and horror, then own this movie on DVD, the video game is also awesome. Summary: A Great Movie
Review: I don't watch much horror, I'm just not taken towards those types of film. But I loved this one. The trust/fear made it great. Who is truly friend or foe? I know this review isn't very helpful but anyone who li9kes classic horror should check this out. Also, if you like games you might want to look at "The Thing" video game, which takes place at the same facillity shortly after the movie ended.

Summary: Wonderfully scary with great effects
Review: Kurt Russell and Wilford Brimley (how's THAT for a quirky pairing) are outstanding in this gory special effects masterpiece. The monster that can assume any form and is TOTALLY unstoppable has got to be the ultimate villain. If you can ignore the shear impossibility of the monster and somehow accept it at face value, it's gonna scare the pants off you! The DVD comes with great behind-the-scenes and making-of documentaries as an added bonus to a real classic.

Review: This film is a great example of what Carpenter can be capable of. Forget his newer movies (Escape From LA or the bismal Ghosts of Mars), if you want Carpenter, see Halloween, The Fog, and of course, The Thing. Carpenter has proved he is capable of making a movie scary in every style horror, in Halloween (his best work) he shows he knows how to do slahser films, in the Fog, he proves he does ghost stories right, and here in The Thing, he brings his talent to the monster-movie area. Atmosphere is a big part of horror films, and Carpenter hits the nail right on the head, the atmosphere is truley horrific. After all the scientists at a Norwegian research lab are gruesomley and mysteriously murdered, Kurt Russle and a group scientists become victim to an alien that was been dug up from deep under the ice. To ad the trouble, the alien can perfectly imitate any other life form it comes in contact with. With no way of getting contact to the rest of the world, or escaping for that matter, this crew is stuck with no one to trust, for they don't know who is real, and who may be "The Thing." If there was one flaw in the movie to be pointed out, it would have to be the excessive use of gory make up effects that Rob Bottin worked on. A dogs heads splitting open, a mans chest caving in, the operation of a disgusting burnt up carcass, and a man shoving his fingernails under the skin of another mans face are just some of the things you see in The Thing. It is understandble in places for this gore, but it often feels excessive and over used. But it is very obvious that Rob Bottin did work hard to create these effects, so give him some credit. All in all, one of Carpenters best films, along with the Fog and Halloween. A must for any Carpenter fan who has not seen it, as well as for any fans of other sci-fi horror films like Alien or Predator. See it, it will send chills down your spine.

Summary: WOWWWW! Enough Said!
Review: Ok, most people give this picture high marks, so it's no surprise that I do too. I just want to make a comment on the picture rating and the sound rating. I'm not sure what these people are talking about, the picture looked great. Better than the clarity you got from the theatre or just off of TV or VHS. The sound, as well, is also awsome. The surround sound is used much more than what the above reviews said, that you can read when clicking on the sound rating. I've seen this movie several times before I saw the DVD. The picture quality is much better on the DVD than you'll find on any other format. The colors are richer and more intense. On VHS, television, or in the theatre, the picture quility had that old film stock grainy look that lower budget movies had. The sound uses the DD 5.1 sound format a lot. As soon as I popped the DVD in and started it up, the intro music came out like it should. The thumping bass came out of the center channel and the keyboard sound came out of the right front speaker. When the helicopter finally entered the picture, all 5 channels were being used effectively. It was surround sound ladies and gentlemen. Once inside the buildings, most of the stuff was heard out of the center speaker and left-right channels only. The only thing coming out of the rear was the howling winds. That's just how everything is supposed to be done though! In short, what can you do with a 20 year old movie. For what they had to work with, the DVD version of The Thing turned out great. It's better than a 5 star rating!
