Rating: Summary: Near Perfect Review: I'm not going to talk about how great the transfer is, or how informative the "making-of" segment is. They're what we expect from DVD, and praising them would be like praising a car because its wheels are round. I'm here to talk about the film.John Carpenter's The Thing is one of the greatest horror movies ever made. It is a masterpiece of paranoia and dread. The special effects are second to none, and still look convincing in this age of CGI.Better yet, they are unpredictable and imaginative. The acting is spot-on by a group of underrated character actors led by the perrenially underrated Kurt Russell. The screenplay is tight, well-plotted and suspenseful. We learn just enough about each of the characters to make us feel as if we know them. Its ending is logical and appropriate for the plot points that lead up to it.The cinematography is moody and dark, just what this movie needs. The music is a far cry from other horror-movie scores, and warrants listening on a cd apart from the context of the film.Underneath all of of this, buried in the action, is a theme, something most current movies don't have. It's actually about something, namely the idea that what separates us from others, and makes us individual is our wills. In The Thing, Carpenter gives us a smart, thought-provoking movie disguised as bizarre, creepy entertainment. Not an easy thing to do.
Rating: Summary: AWSOME Review: Im only 13 but I have seen many movies. We have hundreds of movies and I swear to God Im not lying (my dad collects them) I have seen many horror movies but none such as this. This had awsome effects especially for being made in the early 80s before computers were used alot in movies. I have to give this one 5 stars.
Rating: Summary: Dismally disappointing! Review: Having grown up on sci-fi of the old school, and the original Thing, I found John Carpenter's interpretation dismally disappointing. It had no humanity, and none of the commarodery of the original, and he managed to wring all the atmosphere from this movie, down to the last ounce! I know that the more gore the merrier, but it now leaves nothing to the imagination, and in the end death was not nearly swift enough. Sad to say, that one of the classic sci-fi movies of all times is now out of print; if you can manage to rent of a version of the original 1951 Thing, From Another World, you will be treated to sci-fi at it's best! Skip Mr. Carpenter's.
Rating: Summary: A quick note . . . Review: JUST TOHUGHT I'D POINT OUT, THAT NOT EVERYONE IN LIVERPOOL,ENGLAND IS BRAINLESS. A GOOD FILM!
Rating: Summary: Great film, nearly as good as the original Review: Excellent film, Russell plays a superb role and the suspense is carried out throughout the film. Something missing for a 5 star review, not sure what . . but the original had it. Michelle, Chrissy and Bernie. X

Rating: Summary: Still waiting for special effects that outdo The Thing!! Review: The Thing(Collector's Edition) DVD is worth every penny I paid for it. The numerous features really show why DVD is going to be the future of video. Well, I am here to say, "The future is NOW!!" I really enjoyed the commentary by John Carpenter & Kurt Russell. To hear them talk about what they went through making the film, laughing about memories, etc. gave me a different insight into one of the greatest Sci-Fi/Horror films ever(although alot of people wouldn't agree). But, the film over the years has gained a following and viewing this DVD only made me love the movie even more. I love to watch it with someone who has never seen it and watch their reaction to some of the really scary moments in the film. The special effects are AWESOME and, in my opinion have never been equalled since. The best way to do that would be to make a sequel. John Carpenter....what are you waiting for?? It's only been 17 years!!
Rating: Summary: Makes the recent X-Files film look like Sesame Street. Review: An alien buried in the ice millions of years ago that comes back to life and can take any shape or form. Sounds familiar? Believe me, there is nothing familiar about this John Carpenter classic. If you enjoy horror, sci-fi and thrillers you will love this.An excellent film that had me gripped from start to finish. Dark, scary, full of suspense, unusual special effects and very entertaining. Buy or rent it this week!
