Summary: Good but...
Review: Hold your horses!!!. This movie is not THAT good. The story is good but is way too similar to Alien, which is an infinitely better film. The quality of the DVD is excellent, not the best I've seen but, bearing in mind that the movie is 15+ years old, it is impressive. And so are the special effects, quite nasty at times.

Summary: I'm not a gore fan at all, but love this flick
Review: Having read the official amazon.com review of "The Thing," I have to post a slightly different opinion. Yes, the special effects are eye-opening and graphic, but it's not just gore fans who like this film. I should know. My favorite movies ("Local Hero," "Bagdad Cafe") are totally devoid of blood and guts, yet "The Thing" remains high on my list as well.

I saw "The Thing" when it first came out in the early '80s and was shocked at the critical lambasting it took. Critics of that day were hung up on the earlier '50s version of the story, which starred James Arness in a carrot suit. Gimme a break. This one is superior in every way to the original film version, starring Kurt Russell as a real anti-hero (kind-of a hung-over Antarctic version of Snake Pliskin). Also good supporting work from a fine cast of character actors whose faces you'll recognize but names, maybe not. And the music, by Ennio Morricone (best known for Italian westerns like "The Good, The Bad, And the Ugly") is his usual excellent work; while most movie music shouldn't be noticeable, he manages to make his music part of the atmosphere in a more intrusive way that somehow weaves itself into the film perfectly.

It is a gory film, make no mistake about that. But it's not the gore that'll make you jump. It's The Thing. Did they get him? Are the survivors human? Were the victims really imitations of life? Good questions for a film with a small cast and atmospherics that aptly depict the isolation, claustrophobia, and paranoia among the characters. Still can't figure why critics bashed this flick when it came out, and still seem less than impressed.

Summary: excellent film with TONS of extras
Review: This is one of the greatest Sci-Fi classics from the 1980's. It also holds the same rank among the horror films from the same decade! The DVD version of this film should be the benchmark against which all of your other DVD purchases are made. The sound is great, the picture is in widescreen, and the extra interviews and behind-the-scenes footage makes it a collector's item that will not just sit on the shelf!

Summary: One of the best movies ever !!
Review: This is in my top 5 all time favorite movies. Like Terminator, way ahead of its time.

Summary: My Favorite film
Review: I am not a trained film critic. Thank God ! Because if I was, I know That I would have to, by law , pan this movie. It has all the things a film critic is told not to like. Violence, gory Special effects, and no love story. Well, i'm not trained to hate these things, so can tell you that this is the best Sci-Fi film out there. The tension builds through the whole feature. The isolation you feel while watching it , is palpable, and the charachters are flawed and human. Dealing with the situation they are thrust in , imperfectly, like most of us would, i bet. The ending is the epitome of perfection. if it ended any other way i would have walked out laughing, instead of shaking. The DVD is super. More Extras than you could shake a stick at. and the sound and picture quality is vastly improved over the video. buy this, and watch it late at nite, when there is no one to walk in on you , or phone. This movie will take you to the Antarctic and keep you there for 90 min.

Summary: The greatest S.F.movie ever made
Review: When I first saw this film, in 1993 winter(cold and snowed like anartica), in VHS Hi-Fi format, hooked up to my 2-channel audio system(my brand new B&W801), all alone in my house, from midnight to around 2:00 a.m, I was simply overwhelmed. I dreamed the worst kind of nightmare in my lifetime that night, and several times again even after months. It had so convincing reality even for me, who had disliked S.F. stuffs. I became a S.F. fan later on. But, I have to confess that I didn't had that kind of experience with T-2, A-2, Stshp.Trps, L.in.S. J.P.etc. They are great movies of course, and I can recommend without reservation to anyone. But I think over-use or extreme dependancy on special effect has some side-effect. They seldom use or intensify the viewer's imagination - the most powerful effect S.F. movie can expect. They remain at the same place that director meant them to be. But the film like this one, uses viewer's imagination to increase horror as the movie goes on, and time goes by. It grows in one's imagination, regardless of original story. Predator (and Jaws, Close encounter, etc) suceeded in that point, not to reveal the whole feature of the monster/aliens until climax. Viewers are apt to use his/her imagination to the extreme before the climax. And the way he/she uses his/her imagination remains long after the movie's over. That's why some film appears in nightmare and some film does not regardless of the reality of special effect. Well, the story and effects are a little bit out of date in this time of flood of S.F.'s, but this is the "must have" for all of the S.F.fans. Advise for those who haven't experienced this film: Choose time and place carefully. All alone, midnight, A/V system full on. this film well deserves it. I envy you your first experience you'll have with this film.

Summary: A great movie made even better by widescreen
Review: A classic! I had been waiting for Universal to release this in widescreen, the real way to watch a movie. Asides from the format improvement, the acting, story, and sound are first rate.

Summary: GREAT MOVIE!!!!
Review: I have seen this movie numerous times. So many times in fact, that I can fall asleep watching it. Who cares, I have the DVD. I can watch it again whenever I want and will, many many times. I just came into this review section of "The Thing" because ALL of the reviews, I was sure, would be 5 stars! I was right.

Summary: Dated but fun
Review: When this first came out I was one of the first in line to see it. Scared the beejeezez outta me. Loved it. Still like the characters even though the great SFX though state-of-the-art then are not now. It's like watching the orginal Frankenstein, dated but fun.
