Summary: THE BEST OF ITS KIND BUT NOT FOR EVERYONE
Review: some movies you watch for fun some movies you watch when you have nothing else to do and some just becouse you like them, then there a few that you watch for a good scare. these are few (very few)and far between woman in black is the best of these not a film that you may like but love it or hate it you will watch it and it will scare you in fact many people that i have seen this film with say one off two things. 1,they disliked the film becouse it was to scary 2, they loved the film becouse it was so scary.theres no point in going over the plot others have already done this , it should be said however that this a gothic ghost story and not a horror movie in the sense of hellraiser or evil dead who in there own right are brilliant. so dont watch this thinkig you will see body parts flying every ... what you can expect is a moody atmospheric movie that at times is slow but has a story to tell that will make your bloood run cold. ...the others is a good film to be sure even an exllent film but can not be comppared to this the others will not keep you awake at night this will, this film has a feeling of fear and dread that has frozen people in fear watching this, a feat that i cannot find in any other film in my collection of over 450 horror dvds including the others. not in all cases is the mojority oppion right but in the case of this film it is 100% correct as for that student of film, knocking this film due to its lack of of big hollywood money, learn these lessons and you may just pass school lesson 1: hollywood polish doese not an effective horror film make, lesson2: there has been very few big hollwood horror films and even fewer effective ones

Summary: Great Ghost Story
Review: "The Woman in Black" is a perfect example of what is possible on the small screen. Employing little-known actors, a chilling story, and an obviously limited budget, the makers of this film have created a frighteningly enjoyable little film. If you are a fan of campfire ghost stories or haunted house films, this is for you. If you are looking for a slasher flick or gore or monsters, or if you have limited attention span, you'd better pass on this one. This story is slow to build, judicious in its use of actual encounters with the "other world," and lavish in its application of creepy atmospheric effects. You have to have time to watch and contemplate and enjoy the whole thing. You won't be disappointed.

Summary: THIS WAS NOT SCARY
Review: This was a slow movie. Maybe if the "women in black" was in the movie longer then two minuets it would of been better. The reviews for this movie is all hype. If the movie is as good as everybody says Iam sure people would of heard of it, or it would be more popular then it is. Overall, this movie is just a plain old ghost story, not a scary movie.

Summary: Not Quite What I Expected
Review: After reading all of these reviews i finally broke down and bought this movie. It starts off slow, and i expected that, but then it never really picked up, I was expecting to see something really scary that would make you not want to watch this at night, but all i found was something that made me almost fall asleep. Don't get me wrong there were a few scenes that made me think OK now its gonna get good, and one that genuinely put a chill in but, just didn't deliver to me. I liked the story behind it, you know the evil lady in black showing up all around at different times, but thats all, they could've at least had made so that she had even more impact when she showed up but I don't know, I took a gamble and I lost, but don't let my review stop you from buying this.

Summary: One of the best ever ghost stories
Review: This movie has all the right elements--an innocent skeptical young hero, a deserted Victorian mansion and long kept secrets-- to make it one of the best ghost stories ever made. It is every bit as good as "The Changling" or "The Haunting". It doesn't have to rely on slash and gore to scare the living daylights out of you, the "woman in black" is creepy enough all by herself. Don't watch this one alone in the dark like I did. I shrieked so loud that it woke up my entire family. I guarantee that after watching this movie you will want to sleep with the light on!

Summary: Scary...as...hell!
Review: There is a scene in this movie, that has been mentioned in previous reviews, that will scare you half to death. I don't think it can be overstated how terrifying this film is. Frankly, I don't scare easily. I LOVE the horror genre, and this movie is so scary it had me (albeit briefly) wanting to give it up because a) it would take something incredible to frighten me this way again and b) it made me momentarily rethink whether it was even good for my health to be subjecting myself to this sort of fright. But of course, it's very worth it. It's just a really good movie. The direction is top notch, and really makes the film. In ways it reminded me of the original Halloween, in that the title character here would show up, a la Michael Myers, in places that could easily be missed. The way the shots pan, you're always half expecting her to be right there, but unlike most modern horror pics that feel the need to cash in on every set up, even if it's with a fake scare, this one just keeps building until you're in a state where you literally don't know what to expect. You can't even expect the unexpected. The story's top notch, subtle, and leaves a few questions unanswered, which I certainly have no problem with. It's the type of film that'll have you questioning every obscure sound you hear when you try to sleep that night. They say watch it with the lights off and at night, well I say the same, just bring a friend. And if you can get them to spend the night with you, or vice versa, then by all means do it. Unless you like to go sleepless.

Summary: WHY ?????????
Review: WHY don't they make ghost stories like this anymore ???? This is TRULY a movie that will make your palms sweat...AND, with NO use of GORE or MONSTERS...Just a good old fashion' movie about things that 'go bump in the night'...This WILL creep you out !

You won't find any cheap, funny lines here...Or GOBS of blood and rotting corpses.......But you WILL find true tension and suspense.

DON'T hesitate: GET this movie, and watch it with the lights out...You will NEVER visit the coast of England again without feeling a bit jittery.

SUPERB filmaking !

Summary: Could Only See This With My Huge Wolf-Dog By My Side
Review: I get very frightened over seeing these types of films when they are well done. Boy, did this one succeed. I had trouble sleeping for several nights despite having a husband and dog with me in the room! Frankly, I would have had to leave a theater if that had been my viewing venue because I would have been too scared to stay. I only made it through this because I could see it at home. The scenario involves a Victorian London solicitor (lawyer) who goes to the English countryside area to work on a legal matter. There he first sees a woman dressed in black who wordlessly stares at him. He then finds out she is the local ghost. If he's seen her, he's told, then he has been singled out by her for haunting. And, man, can this woman haunt! She is not confined to this locale either and can follow him wherever he goes. I don't want to tell you any more because I may ruin it for you. I first saw this film several years ago but recently had it brought to my attention again by my friend Ellen M. She finally was able to see it at home too. It scared her so much that she screamed out loud at one point, even though utterly secure and safe in her own home! Believe me, I knew how she felt. If you've been looking for a top flight ghost film, look no further.

Summary: Obscure Gem
Review: ... Well, it terrified me! This is a really well put together little film. It's well written, well acted and expertly directed by Herbert Wise (does this mean all ghost movies directed by men named Wise are good?). It also has the most frightening and malicious ghost I've seen on screen, in the person of actress Pauline Moran. If you love ghost movies that are scary because of atmosphere and not overloaded special effects, don't miss this one.
