Summary: Spooky!
Review: I saw this film on TV about ten years ago, late at night, home alone, in a big house. The perfect setting for a perfect scary movie. And till this date it is film which scared me the most.

I was happy to know that this little gem finally found its way to VHS and DVD. It was made for TV like other films of its kind. Most of them you'll never find again and nothing like this, for a strange reason, ever gets made for the big screen.

Monsters, blood and gore never frightened me. The common horror film is usually dull and packed with clichés. You know exactly what's gonna happen and when you'll jump. There are no surprises. They are simply not scary. The Woman in Black is something else. It's a victorian ghost story! I don't want to get into the details, but you'll meet a young man staying alone in a huge haunted house far from people. There are weird things happening there, there are strange sounds, and it's the woman in black; the pale ghost of an old woman dressed in black who you'll usually see just standing still like a pole in the distance staring with red rimmed eyes and an evil look on her face. Gone is the gore and the blood, the action and the special effects, thank God. The film is actually very slow paced. But you'll be on the edge of your seat. You'll know the woman is around, you'll be looking for her, but you'll never know when or where she'll show up. And usually she shows up when you least expect it. This is clever film making, a film from a director who knows exactly how to play with your feelings and fears and psychologicaly push you to the limit before he gets you from behind. You'll have to watch it to know what I mean, but I can assure you that you, atleast once, will be shocked so much your limbs will turn cold with fear and shivering for another couple of minutes or ten.... I wish there were more of this kind.

Summary: Brilliant!
Review: This is the one and only film that I've felt compelled to comment on in Amazon. With a modest budget and BBC tv-movie production values, the filmmakers have crafted a masterpiece -- a ghost story that easily rivals the original "Haunting" and any other like film you can name. A strong mood is struck from the opening scene and the stakes rise throughout the film. Your nerves are slowly tweaked by subtle terrifying incidents until the penultimate visceral moment of horror -- the effects of which haunt you well beyond the disturbing ending.

The film is more effective than both the hit London play and Susan Hill's original novel, which is really saying something, as both are wonderful in their own right.

It's truly a great shame that this shining example of the genre is relatively unknown. Hopefully I have done a little to rectify this by writing this review. I strongly believe that any fan of ghost stories would not want to miss this.

Summary: The Woman In Black
Review: I have not purchased this DVD as I Live in the UK and so it wont play on region 2 dvd players but my drama teacher let us watch at the end of the school term and it was fatastic. I rate it as one of the most terrifying films i have ever watched. It uses a very slow plot and builds tension gradually to great effect. I will not let slip my favourte scene but i will tell you it has something to do with toy soldiers and a shocking face. You may think because a kid has writen a report on this film it is meant for children but no matter how many times my drama teacher has watched she still screams. I recomend this film highly and urge yo to buy it.My whole drama class were clinging onto their seats and sheilding their faces. Oh and you will definetely have nightmares for the following 2 weeks after you watch it.

Summary: I'm happy to find this excellent, terrifying movie on tape.
Review: Back when 'The Woman in Black' first aired on television six years ago, I saw it twice. Until happily finding and buying it off Amazon last week, I had not seen it again (although I have been wanting to own it for years). Just as I expected, despite the number of years that have passed, its performance this time around reinforced my previous opinion that it is, perhaps, the most effective ghost story put to film. Forget gore or unnecessary special effects...They aren't needed. It just goes to show that a large budget isn't needed to make a fine film, and that one doesn't have to be beaten over the head with special effects to get the point. I find it a shame that this movie is not available in many video stores, because it certainly deserves a broader circulation.

Summary: Scared me to death!
Review: There are very few films that make me feel like a child of 10, sitting in a dark theater, watching Black Sunday or some equally disturbing film for the first time. But THIS MOVIE did that for me! I was that scared child again! What a thrill! What a ghost! She is there, always at a glance, not what you expect, and dangerous to behold. And our poor hero doesn't quite understand what is going on or what is going to happen to him. Neither will you. It is sheer terror to watch this film and to know that the woman in black will have her revenge. One scene, as another reviewer noted, made me jump from my chair, with an unexpected scream. It was a long time before I watched the film again. But not alone. Susan Hill's book is worth the price too. They are both scary in the tradition of the old ghost story. Get scared. Have fun.

Summary: Old-fashioned bone-chilling ghost story
Review: If you are a fan of bloodless, but blood-curdling ghost stories, this is the flick for you!! I just finished watching it,and had to write a review while I was still in "terror" mode. This is one scary movie. There are scenes in it that are sooooooo scary, you may just jump out of your chair, like I did,or watch it through your fingers(like I did a couple of times!)I love being terrified by good movies, and this one is a combination"The Changeling;"The Others;" and the 1963(and best) version of "The Haunting."
It is set in a remote seacoast village in England, complete with dense fog and an old house...an excellent combo to begin with!
Because it is a British movie, and therefore generally low-key,those of you who like your terror fast-paced and bloody might not find this movie to your liking. However,if you have been scared out of your wits by "The Haunting," then you will absolutely be in love with this movie.
I won't give anything away, but there is one scene in particular that will positively make you jump, and scream.Really well done!!!
I highly recommend that you NOT watch this alone,in a dark room.Seriously..Enjoy!!!

Summary: Atmopheric and menacing
Review: Lovers of the splatter-type horror flick will be left cold by this film. Of course, they miss the point: they don't really like HORROR, they like GORE. Some few films can deliver both gore and atmosphere, but they are genre-hybrids. The essence of classic horror is atmosphere: the creation of a sense of dread, of looming evil, of lurking malevolence-- and inexorably increasing it to a point of crisis. By nature, this cannot be accomplished at a pace more proper to an action flick. Hence the negative reviews of this film and other classics of the horror genre (such as The Haunting and the even greater book that is its source, The Haunting of Hill House, for example.) Gore films -- Friday the 13th and Evil Dead and that ilk-- are about as subtle as a bludgeon, and subtlety is indispensible in creating atmosphere. The Woman in Black succeeds admirably in creating an oppressive atmosphere of dread and immanent malevolence that few films have ever matched, let alone surpassed. The sense of looming evil is almost palpable. But it requires active watching, and if one wants a film to leap out and club them over the head, they should stick with Freddie Kruger. For lovers of intelligent and chilling, classic horror, this will be quite a find. If you love Shirley Jackson or Algernon Blackwood, you'll be impressed. If you prefer Friday the 13th, wait for the next (and seemingly inevitable) sequel.

Summary: Not even worth one star
Review: I love scary movies so one day while searching for a good scary movie I came across The Woman in Black. After reading the reviews about how awesome this movie is I got is as a gift. Words cannot express how dissapointing this movie is. It starts off incredibly slow and does not pick up for the whole entire hour and a half that it is on. There is no real suspense in the movie and the ending was stupid. I do like
British horror movies but trust me this is not one of the good ones. It's not worth the money you spend on it. The only scary thing about this movie is that I'll never get the hour and a half back that I spent watching this garbage.

Summary: The Woman Is Dull
Review: Read so many great reviews of this film -- it's SO scary, they said. Finally tracked down a copy of the DVD. Now, I absolutely love horror films, everything from the old giallos by the likes of Mario Bava and Dario Argento, to the Friday the 13th and similar francises, and on to The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby, Evil Dead and all the other GREAT horror films of our time. But The Woman in Black is not among them. It is slow, tedious, and incredibly dull. I warn any of you that are thinking of spending good money on a copy of this to wait until it shows up on television or in your video store or something. You'll be glad you did when you come to the end of this flick and find yourself yawning instead of screaming.
