Rating: Summary: A sub-"Halloween" in the "Scream" way. Sad and sorrying Review: After screenwriter Kevin "Scream" Williamson, another young slasher fan enters the world of cinema, this time as a director. The result is of course one more slasher - besides, John Carpenter is Jamie Blanks' main influence and source of inspiration (especially "Halloween", which created the slasher fashion). The starting idea is quite good (another serial killer, without a face, this time inspired by urban legends), but, even if you won't be able to forget about "Se7en" and the capital sins, we were allowed to expect a little better treatment. Blanks' mistake was that he took too many sequences from "Halloween": the dead girl on the bed, and the boy hung in the closet, for instance. All those references to one single classic made "Urban Legend" a too unpersonal and frustrating film to be really appreciated and valued. Add to it the female D.J. character, very inspired by the one in John Carpenter's "The Fog", even if this time the girl is much younger and talks only about sex, a directing targeting mostly the young audience, in the "Scream" way, and the killer - a woman! - finally showed and uselessly explaining himself like in "Scream" and sequels. The actors are too young - as usual now, in U.S. horror movies produced these days -, the plot is surpriseless and no good (in any case, far from being as good as we want to say), the ending is pitiful (of course, the killer is not dead!), made only for the purpose of a sequel, and the worst thing is, we ain't scared at all. Jamie Blanks' will make even worse with his next film, "Valentine". In both cases, just run away!If you really want to appreciate Jared Leto and Alicia Witt, you better watch "Fight Club", "Requiem for a Dream" and "Cecil B. Demented". Forget about Blanks and the other actors.
Rating: Summary: A wicked slasher flick! Review: You have got to see this film. It is a whodunnit slasher type film where all the kill scenes are based on urban legends. I swear you will not guess the killer's identity. And when you do discover who the killer is, you will be surprised and kick yourself for not getting it sooner. Good character development and great deaths make Urban Legend a must-see film!
Rating: Summary: Nice gore, good plot Review: I was surprised by how good this movie was. I expected it to be a below average teen slasher flick. The plot was much better than anticipated. A girl getting revenge on her best friend, ends up killing people by urban legends, and even a poor little dog. The level of gore was good, because one of the girls gets really smashed up by an axe, and all you saw was the hand. My only real problems was that the killer kills people who don't have anything to do with her boyfriend dying and that she got shot twice, fell out of building and off a bridge but still didn't die. Great opener, comical relief by the College cop, I really enjoyed this movie. Recommended for teens, definetely not for the kids, (Even though I am one.)
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable horror thriller Review: Urban Legend is a clever, frightening and entertaining horror movie with a good plot and an original idea. It delivers horror, suspense, surprising shocks, good characters, humor, and plenty of gore. The storyline sets this film apart from other teen slasher flicks because it focuses on popular urban legands. It starts with a brilliant opening scene, and unfolds quite cleverly until the very end where the killer is revealed. The acting was pretty good and quite convincing as well. The movie presented many teenage characters and the mystery surrounding the killer was both clever and enchanting since there were many possibilities. Nice appearences from Brad Dourif as the gas station attendant and Robert Englund as the college professor who specializes in urban legends. Overall, Urban Legend is a pretty good effort and I really enjoyed it. I recommend this film to anyone who likes teen slasher films and urban legends.
Rating: Summary: One of the better Post-Scream flicks. Review: This movie deals with a group of college students who are trying to solve a murder mystery involving a crazed killer who uses urban legends as clues for them to follow, will any one of them be next? An unexpectely great and effective thriller that doesn't need to be one of those "Scream" rip-offs like " I Know What You Did Last Summer" or " Valentine", but uses clues and rules and scares too. Even Freddy Kruger himself " Robert Englund" and Chucky himself " Brad Douriff" make apperences too. Also recommended: Scream, Maniac ( 1980), Final Destination, Link, Psycho ( 1960), The Ring, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Red Dragon, Idle Hands, Silence of the Lambs, Scream 2, Manhunter, Hannibal, Se7en, The Game, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, House by the Cemetery, The Sixth Sense, Last House on the Left, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Jeepers Creepers, Lucio Fulci's The Beyond, and Halloween 2.
Rating: Summary: Great Slasher Movie Review: This is another Slasher-Movie like I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER and SCREAM - but it is very good. The murders are scary and unusual(not the typical knife-blood-murders) and the ending kept me on the edge of my seat. The sequel is garbage, but this one rocks. I'd recommend it to anybody, who likes horror/slasher movies.
Rating: Summary: A little pathetic Review: This film opened the wrong year. It opened up against the scariest movie of all time ala The Exorcist. ... Very predictable, very few scares, follows a traditional slasher film formula... Rent it. Don't buy it. Better than I Know what You Did Last Summer...
Rating: Summary: Folk Lure Review: Riding the return of the teen horror film, URBAN LEGEND, is as enjoyable, as it is predictable. Like almost every film of this type, its cast is populated by good looking young people, and there's a homicidal maniac killing folks left and right. This time the "twist" involves the killer using folklore as the basis for the way victims are killed. When a college student is killed, the Pendelton campus, is put on alert. Student Natalie Simon (Alicia Witt) and campus reporter, Paul Gardener (Jared Leto), follow leads to try and stay ahead of the killer and stay alive As one might expect, there are multiple suspects thrown out there for the audience to pick from. I have to say though, that the resolution wasn't all that shocking, and that the method of killings was more fun than the film itself. Directed by Jamie Banks, the film has a few jolts in it, but I think towards the climax, it loses whatever momentum it had with the ending. The cast and killings make this one worth watching The performance from Witt is solid and would make fellow horror heroines Jamie Lee Curtis or Sigourney Weaver proud. The DVD has an o.k. commentary track. On the downside, there is a rather dopey featurette, complete with a deleted sex scene between Tara Ried and Michael Rosenbaum. The only other "extra" on the disc is the theatrical trailer. The film can be watched in either widescreen or pan and scan formats The Choice Is Yours The DVD is recommended with reservations
Rating: Summary: Right Place at right time Review: I have this movie and like watching it. The plot is good and original. The only thing that kinda killed it were the killings. In order for every thing to happen, the victim had to be at the right place at the right time. What if the girl in the beginning didnt stop at a gas station. What if that Witt girl ands that guy didnt go to the woods. What if Witt didnt go past the building at the end. Most of the murders had to happen at the right place at the right time. The 2nd one is more beliveable because the killer just kills the victims. Some in Urban Legend manner, other not in it.
Rating: Summary: The call is coming from inside the house Review: Ha ha! Well, Urban Legend is probably not exactly what most people would be looking for from a film with such a title. I happen to be a nut for "Urban Legends," and if you, like me, would prefer to see a film that is basically a group of people sitting around telling twisted tales about a friend of a friend, full of reenactments of the classic stories we all have heard before, then I recommend you pick up a copy of the film Campfire Tales, and The Big Book of Urban Legends, which is a graphic novel (comic book style) encyclopedia of sorts. But this is not to say that you should discount the film, "Urban Legend," completely. It's actually pretty good for recent teen slasher horror. Not on the level of Scream, but what film is? Urban Legend is the tale of Natalie Simon (Alicia Witt), a young college student whose friends are slowly being picked off by a serial killer in the style of well known Urban Legends. The film is half slasher horror, half detective story, as Natalie and the school reporter, Paul, try their best to find out who's behind the killings and why. There are plenty of great scenes that actually DO reenact our favorite Urban Legends, like the opening scene that plays out the old "There's someone in the backseat!" story, to the awesome tune of "Total Eclipse of the Heart," (well, it's one of my faves anyway), and the scene where Joshua Jackson takes in the deadly mixture of pop rocks and soda. Toward the end, the film might stretch the climax a tad too long, but it's a lot of fun leading up to that point, and the final scene is a nice touch. Probably the only thing that really hurts this film is that most, if not all of the characters are less than likeable, even if a couple of the girls are pretty cute. And I Know What You Did Last Summer still holds the award for "cutest girls in a slasher film" as far as I'm concerned, but those characters were also unlikeable, and at least Urban Legend is a much better movie.
