Summary: A good idea that didn't work
Review: Spoilers ahead. This movie is an absolute shame to the horror film industry. It had such a great concept-a killer uses local myths to slice and dice the teens in the area.It sounds so original and brilliant.Too bad the execution wasn't good. The direction is quite choppy, and you can never really tell how the director wants the scares to be like. The script is fairly predictable (for me anyway).Could this be because of the horribly slow pace the film moves

at? It's so slow that you'll probably know what's going to happen before it happens. The acting is below-average.The characters have literally no depth and are very badly developed. It's a major bummer when you find out who the killer is.It turns out to be a seemingly harmless girl! It would've been very interesting if the killer was Professor Wexler (and you had the feeling it was him),but no.Instead,we get a girl who just went a little mad.The ending is a serious letdown too. It's even worse than the ending fron A Nightmare On Elm Street 1 (and that had a terrible ending). Overall,Urban Legend is a fairly tedious and boring horror movie.Terrible direction,D-grade acting and an awful ending made this a tooth grinding experience. It's really just a poor imatation of real horror flicks, like Friday The 13th,Halloween,Scream and many more. But it does deserve two stars because the killings were fairly neat, the gore was pretty high and the story imaginative. As for everything else, you can pretty much flush it down the loo.Rated R for gory horror violence and some language.

Summary: Exciting, with a very surprising finale
Review: I thought I would hate this movie, but I was very wrong! URBAN LEGEND is a great film, even though it is a little reminiscent of SCREAM and I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER. This one did throw in another ingredient though, which was killing based on urban legends. Even though it this is a horror movie, it also is a mystery. I was totally blown away by who the killer was. The acting was good, except for Jared Leto, who can't act if his life depended on it. Anyway, I would definitely buy this movie. It'll make you think twice about getting in the car before checking in the back seat :)

Summary: Oh, the STUPIDITY of it all!
Review: Okay, okay, I give up! The sound that you are now hearing is me throwing out my hopes for the future of the horror film. Once a place where talented individuals like John Carpenter, George Romero, and Don Coscarelli(to name but a few)could tingle our spines and stimulate our minds, the horror genre has become a veritable wasteland of loathsome, brainless junk. Case in point, Urban Legend, a movie so bad that it actually hurts. Who thought that we needed another goofy Scream rip-off? More hip references? Why not? Another ridiculous resolution to a mystery? Sure!! One more hip soundtrack of audio sludge? Bring it on! In our pursuit of dumbing down our youth, we have inadvertantly lobotomized ourselves to the point that we no longer know how to do anything but copy the latest blockbuster. It's sad. Horror is dying.. and we are holding the smoking gun.

Summary: VERY CLICHED
Review: Almost every horror cliche is present in this movie. Cars not starting, a girl not believing the guy is really getting killed, the dumb authority dismissing the heroine's cry for help as nonsense and many, many more. All teens (actors in their 20s) are booze and sex hounds who do nothing more than party and laugh at serious stuff. How annoying.

Once you find out who the killer is you realise that it would have taken precision planning on the scale of Desert Storm to pull off the murders that happen in the movie, even if some of them are purely by chance and some don't even coincide with Urban Legends which is what the whole movie is based on.

Many characters are given (very) brief roles and (very) small personalities. Then they are killed. Like they are just teenage meat that are killed for our pleasure. I thought Hollywood had stopped making conveyor belt movie like this, but obviously not.

When will film-makers realise that horror films should be surreal, elaborate, scary, daring and manipulative? Never apparently.

The only reason for watching this movie is Chris Young's pounding musical score. Once again he has creating a soundtrack that is simultaneously action packed and creepy.

The DVD is in Dolby 5.1 and is beautifully anamorphically enhanced at 2.35:1.

Summary: Not as good as Scream but still fun
Review: Hot off the success of 'Scream' and ' I know what you did last summer' comes another slasher movie, which included a bunch of talent young actors running for their lives throughout most of the movie. 'Urban Legend' offers has many screams and twists as 'Scream' but falls into the 'I've already seen it category' as many other teen slasher flicks have. However this is probably the best after the 'Scream Trilogy' and 'I know what you did last summer', and a lot better that ' I still know what you did last summer'. The movie is basically about student being killed in the manor of an urban legend, and alot of the classics are used here. I really liked this movie and have enjoyed watching it over and over again on DVD; it has a great menu system and some nice extras. Urban Legends has some great twists, and always has you second-guessing yourself.

Summary: Dumb, but has its moments
Review: Mostly, I'm just glad I didn't pay money to see this movie at the theater. That the killer based the murders on urban legends was interesting, but I didn't buy the identity of the murdering psycho. The killer would have had to move at the speed of light to get to all of the people who were killed, AND have superhuman strength. And the animal cruelty was really disturbing. And I'm not just talking about the terrier's fate. Its stupid owner pierced its nose and forced it to drink alcohol. Yeah, that's really funny. On the positive side of the movie, Robert Englund was great as a suspicious professor, and the female campus cop with delusions of grandeur provided some comic relief. Mostly though, this movie sucked. The only scary moments were in the very beginning--the gas station scene. I got a few chills from that one. Anyway, if you want to see this movie, wait until it isn't categorized as a new release and save your money.

Summary: A fun movie, but not a classic
Review: I've always liked reading urban legends, and when this movie came out on video, I really wanted to see it. The plot is interesting. Alecia Witt and Jared Leto are VERY good. And Tara Reid is obviously very talented. The ending is also a huge surprise. Get Urban Legend to watch at a party or when you are bored. It may not be a classic, but it's fun!

Summary: AN INSULT TO THE SLASHER GENRE
Review: I thought that the scream films were a wake up call for the genre, but then along comes this complete dire rip off, that holds no promise what so ever. This is the biggest insult to the slasher genre, bad acting, bad directing, bad script, need I say more. It's films like this that give a bad name to film, it should be wiped off the planet, cause it's enough to make you physically sick!
