Rating: Summary: Sick, Trashy....Throughly Enjoyable! Review: I've watched this film over and over again, mainly because many of the dull and average people I know hated this movie because they either could not understand it or they were simply disgusted. The characters in this film are misfits who are more interesting than the victims they sadistically dispose of. Of course they are psychotic but the people they dispatch are so stupid and obnoxious that you end up cheering on the psychotics even during the graphic torture sessions. This is one of those anti-films that fall into the catagory of Clockwork Orange and in some respects Eraserhead. Captain Spaulding was my favorite character though his appearances in the film are far too brief.
Rating: Summary: House of 1000 corpses Review: When hearing about this movie, I had high expectations. My expectations were fulfilled. This movie was directed by Rob Zombie, who is a horror movie fan already. There were parts that made me laugh. There were parts that simply creeped me out. The whole thought of some of the things in the movie happening would creep anyone out. It had its sick humor, which was fun. It had the characters that you would never want to encounter. Plus, the guy from the 90's mtv show, singled out, was in it. The acting was good, which seems is becoming a rarity in this genre of movies.
Rating: Summary: Rob Zombie - I thought it was just a gimmick Review: Rob Zombie of the former heavy metal group White Zombie has made a living off of horror. He injected his music with it many years ago, and rode the wave to fortune, and fame. I always thought it was just a gimmick, until I saw this movie. It flashes in and out from scene to scene with more camera effects than a kaleidoscope. With cheesy hicks setting the stage for a blood bath, you'll soon realise what I did. Rob Zombie is a schizophrenic. I think he really sees all of this jacked up stuff in his head. Is it too many years of drug abuse? You make the call. After watching this film though, I felt paranoid, depressed, and every other emotion in the book. If you want to have a very bad trip without taking any drugs, watch this movie. Some of the images will haunt you for quite awhile.
Rating: Summary: House of 1000 Disappointments Review: Despite Rob Zombie's efforts, this movie was a HUGE disappointment. For the true horror buffs out there, House of 1000 corpses is nothing more than an entirely unoriginal conglomorate of horror films rolled into one trite, over-the-top and overly long presentation. It was basically a pumped up version of Mother's Day, a horror film written and directed by Charles Kaufman in 1980. Don't waste a precious moment of your life on it.
Rating: Summary: Wasted potential Review: This could have been a classic. But Rob Zombies loving tribute to 1970's horror was destroyed by a cowardly Hollywood. With all the hype surrounding this film about a group of kids who find themselves butchered by a murderous, insane family, one would have expected a legendary contribution to the genre; after all, MGM didn't want it: they thought it was too violent. And so it sat, wasting away. Finally Lions Gate came to the rescue and the film was released. But which film? Rob Zombie's original horrific vision? Or a severely cut retread that feels cobbled together and truncated? Obviously it was the latter. One has to believe that House of 1000 Corpses, as it was shown, was a pale reflection of Zombie's true intent. What was shown was a film shortchanged on shocks and subplot. Zombie may have wanted to make a truly frightening film filled with dark and disturbing images, but the uneven editing and obvious exclusions gives even the most disturbing moments a sloppy, messy feel. The whole thing feels like, well, a Rob Zombie video. Even the nightmarish characters are too superficial, too MTV. Indeed, the motives of the killers are clouded in incomprehensible tirades and unfinished thoughts. In the end, it's the film's inability to maintain a consistent climate of fear that dooms it. For the DVD commentary, Rob Zombie constantly references to changes and deletions he had to make. He sounds defeated. Which pretty well describes House of 1000 Corpses.
Rating: Summary: I DID NOT like this movie. Review: A friend of mine recommened this to me, and we watched it earlier today. I hated this movie. The acting was bad, the plot was barely there, and the writing was HORRIBLE. I understand that this was a throwback to old horror movies from the seventies, but if you're gonna do it, do it right. It had one or two funny and/or disturbing scenes in it, but for the most part, it sucked. I didn't like the use of satanic rituals in this movie. It really bothered me, and I know that the scene was probably meant to do that, but still. If you're the kind of person who is sensitive to that type of material, then stay away from this film. I have my reasons for feeling the way that I do about that. This could have been a fun movie, and I was a bit disappointed. I wasn't expecting much in the first place, but I wanted it to be amusing at best. Like I said, there were a few good moments in it, but not enough to waste an hour and fifteen minutes of your life on. SKIP IT.
Rating: Summary: A true waste of time Review: I borrowed this DVD from one of my nephews. I was expecting at least SOME sort of worthwhile element to it. Instead I was served up a horror film with not even 1 single scary moment. The direction was student level at best. The acting, the same. There is no plot to speak of, other than 4 people going somewhere they shouldn't go on a dark & stormy night. If you feel you MUST own this pastiche of regurgitated cliches, please at least download it or steal it. Let no human profit off this lame waste of time. Not even worth it for "camp" or "spoof" value.
Rating: Summary: Hard to Place Review: It's hard to give this movie a star rating. How much you enjoy this film depends on what you are looking for. On the scales of weird movies, this one tops most categories. The film is enormously evocative; however, what it evocates is repulsion. Because that is the intention of the filmmaker, though, this is a very successful film. There is gore and torture in this film that would make Wes Craven cringe. The camerawork is superb in contributing to the dark mood, and general weirdness of the film. The characters are one dimensional and cartoonish, but they're supposed to be. This is a slasher film, and it's gross even for a slasher film, but it has a cerebral side which demands the audience's full attention. People aren't used to being asked to think during a slasher film. This is not a film for everyone, but if you're up for being taken to places and moods, albeit dark, that you've never experienced before, this film is for you.
